Best Roll-Up Tonneau Cover: The Sentry CT, and When to Go Soft

Quick Take
Our roll-up for most trucks is the TruXedo Sentry CT. Aluminum slats under a canvas top roll up against the cab and strap there, so the rear window stays clear and nothing hangs down into the bed. It locks through the tailgate, carries 400 lb evenly distributed, and keeps a bed drier than any other cover we've reviewed. On most versions two latches let you lift it out without tools. Its one daily habit: the tailgate has to be shut before the cover rolls closed.
Three other roll-ups earn a place. TruXedo's TruXport is the soft vinyl roll-up we'd buy for most trucks: it costs less than any other pick here on most listings, rides on top of the bed rails and carries a 5-year warranty, though it has no lock and no load rating. The TruXedo Lo Pro costs more for a flush, inside-the-rail look and a limited lifetime warranty, and it sheds water only as well as you keep it tight. The BAK Revolver X4s is the hard roll-up for owners who don't want fabric on top, and the hard roll-up with confirmed listings for the 4th gen Tacoma and the Colorado and Canyon. It costs more than the CT on most listings and takes more patience to seat on the rails.
Two hard roll-ups and two soft ones. The rows under each name the truck and bed listings we matched on Amazon's own product pages. See picks ↓
Think of a window shade: a roll-up winds up against the cab and straps there. Nothing hinges up into the back glass, nothing drops into the bed the way a retractable's canister does, and most of them come off their rails when a load needs every inch. On a soft roll-up, vinyl stretches over an aluminum frame; on a hard one, aluminum slats sit under a one-piece top, which is why it can lock and carry weight.
We'd pick a hard roll-up over a folder for anyone who watches the rear window, hauls tall gear at the front of the bed or is tired of lifting panels. The TruXedo Sentry CT is the one to beat. The TruXedo TruXport is the soft roll-up we'd buy when the budget matters more than a lock, the TruXedo Lo Pro is the soft one for a flush look and a lifetime warranty, and the BAK Revolver X4s suits owners who'd rather look at matte vinyl than canvas.
We've reviewed all four on their own pages, and nothing here departs from those verdicts. Before you order, read the fitment rows under the pick for your truck, bed length and tailgate; one listing covers one bed.
Roll it or fold it
Choose a roll-up over a folding cover when one of these describes how you use the truck:
- You want the rear window: a full folder stands its panels up at the front of the bed, where they mostly hide the glass. A rolled cover sits low at the bulkhead, and RealTruck says the X4s doesn't block the rear window or the factory cameras.
- Tall cargo rides up front: bikes, a dirt bike or an appliance against the front wall. Rolled and strapped, the CT and the X4s give back the bed, by RealTruck's account all of it, without a stack of panels for the load to lean on.
- You're tired of lifting panels: the X4s rolls forward with one hand once you pull its release cable at the tailgate end. Owners coming from tri-folds don't miss lifting the panels.
- The cover comes off for big jobs: two front latches free the CT without tools on most versions, and most Lo Pro beds include a quick-release.
Don't buy a roll-up just for floor space, though. The best full folders give back nearly as much: an UnderCover Ultra Flex folded upright on its prop rods takes about 8 in at the cab by one owner's estimate, the same figure one owner guesses for the X4s roll. The gain over a two-thirds folder or a retractable's canister is real; the gain over a good full folder is mostly the window.
A folder still wins two arguments. The Ultra Flex's listings say its tailgate opens and closes with the cover shut, which the CT can't do, and it's the cheaper hard cover: it cost less than the CT on every same-bed listing we compared. Our hard folding cover guide has the folders we'd buy.
Soft vinyl or aluminum slats
This is the bigger decision, and for most trucks we'd pay for slats. A soft roll-up is a weather and privacy cover. A hard one adds a lock and a lid you can trust with weight. Here's how they trade off:
- Security: the TruXport and the Lo Pro latch but don't lock, and a knife opens vinyl. The CT's and the X4s's slats stop a blade, and both release from the tailgate end, so lock your tailgate. Neither locks part-way open the way a Retrax does: the X4s is open or closed, and the CT's warranty excludes driving with the cover partly open.
- Weight on top: RealTruck publishes no rating for either soft cover, so treat each as a cover nothing sits on. The two hard roll-ups are rated at 400 lb evenly distributed, which means weight spread across the closed cover on a parked truck. A kneeling adult or a cooler's corner is a point load, and RealTruck's install sheet says not to drive with objects on top of the X4s.
- Tension: the Lo Pro's vinyl seals against hook-and-loop along the rails, so it keeps water out and stays quiet only while it's pulled tight. RealTruck says a spring tensioner handles that; in practice the sides can need pulling by hand each time it rolls closed. The TruXport Gen 2's tension is set at the factory, and TruXedo says any modification to its latch voids the warranty. Hard roll-ups don't sag, though a new X4s can take a while to lie flat.
- Lifespan: the soft covers have the longest records, mostly on older versions: TruXports have run eight and ten years, though Gen 2 has no long record yet, and reports on current Lo Pro covers stop at three years. CT tops have gone years without ripping or fading, and no slat, latch or rail failure has turned up. The X4s's record is the shortest and the most mixed, with fit and hardware failures in the first year or two.
- Price and warranty: the TruXport costs the least on most listings and gets 5 years. The Lo Pro costs more than the TruXport on most same-bed listings but noticeably less than either hard roll-up, and carries a limited lifetime warranty when you buy from an authorized dealer. The CT and the X4s get 5 years for the original buyer, and the CT's spells out the fabric.
Tools left in the bed overnight call for slats, not vinyl. If you only need to keep dust, prying eyes and most of the rain off groceries and luggage, a soft roll-up does it for less, and of TruXedo's two we'd buy the TruXport. It costs less than the Lo Pro on most same-bed listings, its owners describe a drier bed, and RealTruck lists a 5-year warranty. The Lo Pro's answer is its limited lifetime warranty and a flush, inside-the-rail look. And if you're open to a soft tri-fold, our Tyger T3 against the Lo Pro comparison takes the T3 for most trucks and keeps the Lo Pro for owners who use the whole bed.

RealTruck calls all four no-drill, clamp-on installs on most trucks, and it publishes neither a weight nor a roll size for any of them. None of the four pages describes drain tubes, and the X4s's parts list has none, so on that cover there's nothing to route. The X4s's top is aluminum-reinforced, and the CT's canvas is the current RTxTechWeave, which most owner reports on the CT likely predate. The Lo Pro's rails mount inside the bed, and RealTruck says the cover sits 3/4 in above the bed rail. The TruXport's sheet puts its side rails on top of the bed rails, and RealTruck doesn't publish its height.
What the roll takes from the front of the bed
Open, a cover still takes up room somewhere. Here's what each style leaves you on a Gen14 F-150 short bed (67.1 in on the listings). Where RealTruck publishes no size, the figure is an owner's estimate or measurement and is labeled that way:
Open cover | What sits at the cab end | Full-height bed behind it | Rear window |
|---|---|---|---|
Hard roll-up (BAK Revolver X4s) | A strapped roll; maybe 8 in, one owner's estimate | About 59 in | Clear, per RealTruck |
Hard roll-up (TruXedo Sentry CT) | A strapped roll; RealTruck says 100 percent bed access and gives no size | No figure | Clear |
Full hard folder (UnderCover Ultra Flex) | Panels upright on prop rods; about 8 in, one owner's estimate | About 59 in | Mostly hidden |
Two-thirds hard folder (Gator EFX) | The front panel stays flat over about the first 22 in | About 45 in | Clear |
Retractable (RetraxPRO XR) | A canister across the front, open or shut; 12 to 13 in by owners' measurements (13 used here) | About 54 in | Clear |
The difference from a retractable is when you pay. Its canister reaches down into the bed and keeps its space whether the cover is open or shut; a roll is only there while the cover is open. We have no roll figure for the CT or either soft roll-up; RealTruck calls the CT's and the TruXport's opening 100 percent of the bed and the Lo Pro's nearly the whole bed.
Height is the soft cover's hidden cost. Because the Lo Pro's frame sits inside the bed rails, the closed cover takes a little height off the load underneath, and a washer or refrigerator ratcheted tight against the bed side can bend those rails, so block the load away from the frame. A TruXport owner says an on-top mount gains a couple of inches, and on a shallow midsize bed that can decide whether a tall cooler fits.
For a load that needs the cab end too, plan on taking the cover off. The CT lifts out on its two front latches on most versions; RealTruck says the Tundra 6 ft 7 in version built for the deck rail system skips that quick-release, and so do its two Ram split-gate parts. The X4s comes off its rails with four hand knobs, though lining it back up afterward can take an hour. Most Lo Pro beds come off without tools, but RealTruck's part pages leave the quick-release off a few Ram and Tundra parts, flagged in the fitment rows.
Rain, car washes and cold mornings
The hard roll-ups seal better than the soft ones, and the CT seals best. Its one-piece top has no fold seams, our leak-risk gauge reads low on it, and when water does get in, it's a little at the tailgate end after a car wash or in very heavy rain, and nobody describes wet cargo. The X4s points the same way on thinner, newer evidence: mostly dry beds, a little water on the rest, and RealTruck's own install sheet says the cover is not airtight. We've left its gauge blank until there's more to go on.
A hard roll-up stays dry only when it's seated right. On the X4s, a front corner that rides up near the rear window is a gap in the seal, and a rear edge that sits proud of the tailgate often means the cover sits too far forward; slide it back with the four hand nuts. On a 3rd gen Tacoma, the CT's rail can ride up at the tailgate end over the bed flare, so check it before the first rain. On a RamBox truck, expect to adjust the CT before it sits flush.
The Lo Pro won't keep a bed dry, and we don't expect it to. Every Lo Pro water report describes some water, from nearly watertight through Washington rain to leaks at all four corners in a car wash, and extra weatherstripping at the cab end helps only a bit. The TruXport does better: most of its owners describe a dry or nearly dry bed in rain, with a few drips at the tailgate end in a high-pressure car wash, and the real leaks we know of came from fit problems on a Maverick and a 2024-on Ranger. On either one, keep the vinyl tight, press the hook-and-loop down along both rails after you roll it closed, and keep anything that can't get wet in a sealed bin.
Snow and ice are where the record runs short. CT owners describe snow and a Minnesota winter without trouble, though nobody describes snow load on one. The X4s record splits, and the bad case is a cover that froze shut and broke when it was forced open. Clear heavy snow before you roll either one, and let a frozen cover thaw. With no load rating on either soft cover, brush it off after every storm; we have no reports on years of rolling the Lo Pro's vinyl below freezing.
Hunting a leak? Wet one section of the closed cover with a hose, then open the tailgate and look before you move to the next. Stay out of a closed bed while you do it; the X4s install sheet notes there's no release from inside. Our leaking tonneau cover guide covers the fixes.
The tailgate and a rack
The CT asks for a routine. Its rear seal sits on top of the closed tailgate, so the gate shuts first and the cover rolls closed second. TruXedo support says not to drive with the gate down and the cover shut, and we'd follow that. RealTruck doesn't say whether the X4s's tailgate opens and closes with the cover shut, so ask the seller rather than assume. For a long load, roll the CT all the way to the cab and strap it, which RealTruck says you can drive with. If you want a tailgate that works on its own under a closed cover, that's a folder's job.
None of these four takes a rack on the cover. RealTruck's install sheet rules out tying cargo to the X4s or its framework, TruXedo's TruXport sheet says the same of that cover, and RealTruck says nothing about racks for the CT or the Lo Pro. Owners pair the CT with TruXedo's Elevate rails mounted on the bed beside it; buy the two together, since the rails sit nearer the bed sides than the cover's clamps. That pairing works for owners hauling surfboards and dirt bikes, while a folder's stack may not finish opening against Elevate crossbars unless they sit in the upper slot. BAK's Revolver X4ts adds T-slot rails to the X4s design; we haven't reviewed it, so check fit for your truck and ask RealTruck for its rack limit. For a rack on the cover itself, a retractable is the better tool, and our bed rack cover guide and retractable guide cover that setup.

Watch three trucks. On a Ram DT with the split tailgate, the CT, the Lo Pro and the TruXport have listings for it and the 5 ft 7 in X4s doesn't, and most CT and X4s Ram listings don't name the body style, so confirm the part is for the DT and not the Ram 1500 Classic. On the GM trucks, the CT's and Lo Pro's 5 ft 10 in listings and the X4s's 5 ft 8 in listing are the same 69.9 in bed, so match by the inch figure. And on a Tundra, the deck rail system decides which CT, Lo Pro or TruXport listing you buy, while one X4s part fits either way.
RealTruck lists some fits we couldn't confirm on an Amazon listing. Search the Sentry CT for a 4th gen Tacoma, the Sentry CT for a Ranger, the Sentry CT for a Colorado or Canyon, the X4s for a Ranger, the Lo Pro for a Colorado or Canyon, or the TruXport for an F-150 6 ft 7 in, a Silverado or Sierra 5 ft 10 in or 8 ft 2 in bed, or a Colorado or Canyon, match RealTruck's part number, and check fit for your truck before you order.
Matching the roll-up to the owner
Order the Sentry CT if you want a cover that locks, carries weight, keeps the bed driest and still gives you the whole bed and the rear window. It has listings for the Ram split tailgate, comes out without tools on most trucks (though not the Ram split-gate versions), and cost less than the X4s on 11 of the 14 matching listings we compared. Shut the tailgate before the cover, and on a 3rd gen Tacoma check the rail at the tailgate end.
Choose the X4s if canvas isn't for you, or if you drive a 4th gen Tacoma, a Colorado or a Canyon, where it's the hard roll-up with a confirmed listing. It also cost less than the CT on the Maverick, the 3rd gen Tacoma 6 ft 2 in and the Tundra 5 ft 7 in. Set aside an afternoon to seat it, and get BAK's answers in writing if anything needs trimming. Our Sentry CT and X4s head-to-head goes deeper.
Go soft with the TruXport if nothing worth stealing rides in the bed and nothing rides on the cover. It costs less than the Lo Pro on most same-bed listings, its owners describe a drier bed, and RealTruck lists a 5-year warranty. Line it up slowly on a Maverick or a 2024-on Ranger, and wash it with soap and water only: TruXedo's sheet says no vinyl conditioners, because they shrink the vinyl. Our TruXport review has the fit notes by truck.
Pick the Lo Pro instead if you want the cover flush, inside the bed rails, or the limited lifetime warranty is worth the price gap to you. Buy it from an authorized dealer for the warranty, keep it tight, and treat the vinyl only with a protectant made for tonneau covers.

What owners say
Roll-up owners weigh a roll against a tri-fold, then soft against hard. An X4s owner who has had tri-folds on two different trucks says they block the back window and are speed limited when up, rates the X4s the best yet, and warns buyers off the older X4. Another X4s owner, after Extang and Ford-branded tri-folds in vinyl and canvas, says nothing compares. On the soft side, a Lo Pro owner finds its price hard to justify over TruXedo's TruXport when the two seem equal in build, one mounted inside the bed rails and one on top, and a TruXport owner chose it over the Lo Pro for the couple of extra inches the on-top mount leaves in the bed. A Sentry CT owner two years in says it still looks great and is quiet, secure and nearly waterproof, with a tiny dribble in the corners after heavy water. Our reviews of each cover carry the full owner record on leaks, tension, fit and long-term wear. We'd decide hard or soft first, by what rides in the bed when you walk away, then pick the cover.
“Stay away from the x4, but i have the x4s and so far it’s the best one yet. Have had the tri-fold on 2 different trucks and they work fine, but do block the back window and are speed limited when up.”
“I’ve tried Extang vinyl, canvas, and Ford branded vinyl tri-folds. Nothing compares to my Bak Industries Revolver X4S”
“The LoPro is priced pretty high compared to the Truxport. They both seem equal in build but one sits on top of the bed rail and one sits inside. It's hard to justify the price difference. Without the warehouse special, I would have bought the Truxport.”
“I went with the Truxedo Sentry CT two years ago and it still looks great. It is a little over your budget but it is quiet, easy to open, secure, 98% waterproof (a tiny dribble in the corners after heavy water exposure), and comes with a five year warranty.”
“I have the Truxport and I picked it over the LoPro because it sits on top of the bed, meaning you get a couple extra inches of (the already incredibly limited) bed space.”
