Best Tonneau Cover for a Bed Rack: RetraxPRO XR and Leitner's TONNEAU

Quick Take
Buy the RetraxPRO XR and mount the rack on its rails. T-slot rails run the full length of the cover, the double-wall aluminum slats carry a 500 lb evenly distributed rating, the latch locks at any point along the track and RealTruck backs it with a limited lifetime warranty. That 500 lb describes weight spread over the closed cover, though, and RealTruck publishes no rack, T-slot or dynamic limit for it. Start from the rack maker's rating for its tonneau kit, and keep the load under the lowest limit anywhere in the setup.
Keep a tent off the cover if you drive dirt to reach camp. Leitner's ACS FORGED TONNEAU, the rack we'd bolt to a PRO XR, is rated 400 lb on-road and 800 lb parked in Leitner's FAQ and install guide, and it has no off-road rating; Leitner's in-bed ACS FORGED is rated 400 lb off-road but leaves the bed uncovered. Leitner sells both direct, so we earn nothing on either. The RetraxONE XR puts the same rails on a polycarbonate cover for noticeably less, and the TruXedo Sentry CT is the drier choice when the rack can stand on rails of its own beside the cover.
Two covers with rack rails, the roll-up that leaves the rack to the bed rails, and two Leitner racks, each with the truck and bed fits we confirmed. See picks ↓
A rack and a tonneau cover fight over the same few inches: the top of the bed rails. You can settle it three ways. Bolt the rack to T-slot rails built into the cover, clamp it to separate rails beside the cover, or stand it inside the bed and give up the cover. Each setup puts the weight on a different part, so choose by what the rack will carry and how rough the road gets, then choose the cover.
For crossbars, bikes, boats, a ladder rack or a tent you only drive on pavement, we'd build on the RetraxPRO XR. For a tent headed down dirt roads, we'd put a Leitner ACS FORGED in the bed and skip the cover. Each pick is sold one part per truck and bed, so check the fitment rows against your truck before you order.
Pick the setup before the cover
What goes on the rack and where you drive with it decide this, in that order:
- Crossbars, bikes, boats or a ladder rack, mostly on pavement: the RetraxPRO XR, with a rack whose tonneau kit is listed for it. Yakima, Kuat, Rhino-Rack and upTOP Overland racks all ride on its rails, and the cover still opens and closes with the rack in place.
- The same rails for less: the RetraxONE XR. Same canister and T-slot rails over a polycarbonate cover rated 200 lb evenly distributed, with a 1-year warranty and water at both ends of the bed.
- A tent that lives up top, pavement only: Leitner's ACS FORGED TONNEAU on a PRO XR, rated 400 lb on-road and 800 lb parked. For lighter loads, the Yakima OverHaul HD rides the same rails on Yakima's Tonneau Kit 1, which Yakima rates at 300 lb on-road and 180 lb off-road.
- A tent and dirt roads: the Leitner ACS FORGED standing in the bed, rated 400 lb off-road, with no cover under it. DECKED drawers fit beneath it if you want locked storage.
- Boards or boats now and then, the whole bed the rest of the time: the TruXedo Sentry CT with TruXedo's Elevate rack rails mounted beside it on the bed.
- A folder or a soft cover: not a rack base. The section on folders below explains why.
Three covers that work with a rack
Only the two Retrax covers carry a rack on the cover itself. The Sentry CT makes the list because owners mount separate rack rails on the bed beside it. From each maker's published specs:
Spec | |||
|---|---|---|---|
Cover | Double-wall aluminum slats | One-piece aluminum-reinforced polycarbonate; no hinges, joints or slats | Interlocking aluminum slats under a canvas top |
Rated load | 500 lb, evenly distributed | 200 lb, evenly distributed | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
Rack rails | T-slot rails the full length of the cover | T-slot rails; RealTruck doesn't say how far they run | None on the cover; RealTruck publishes no rack statement |
Leitner TONNEAU | Listed by Leitner, manual or electric | Listed by Leitner, manual or electric | Not listed |
Lock | Keyed latch that locks at any position along the track | Key-lockable in any position along the track | Level-2 locks, a tension cable and up to six automatic latches |
Warranty | Limited lifetime, original buyer, not transferable | 1 year, original buyer, not transferable | 5 years on rails, clamps, bows and fabric, original buyer, not transferable |
Opened | Slides into a canister at the front of the bed, which takes space for good | Slides into a canister at the front of the bed, which takes space for good | Rolls to the cab and straps; RealTruck says 100 percent bed access |
Install time (maker) | Under 60 minutes | Under 60 minutes | 30 minutes or less; spec block says less than 1 hour |
All three clamp on without drilling on most trucks, per RealTruck, and none has a published weight. With the Retraxes, a drill can still come out for the drain tubes: some installs route them without one, others bore through the plastic plugs at the front of the bed, and the ONE XR's hoses on a Maverick call for a hole of about half an inch. The PRO XR costs the most on every matching listing we compared; the ONE XR cost less on all 13 and the Sentry CT less on every pair. Under a rack, the PRO's extra money buys aluminum instead of plastic, 300 lb more closed-cover rating and a lifetime warranty in place of one year.
The canister is the trade you live with. RealTruck doesn't publish its size, and owners measure 12 to 13 in at the front of the bed. On a Maverick's 54.4 in bed, 13 in leaves about 41 in of full-height floor behind it. If a long, flat load rides in the bed most days, skip the Retrax and look at the Sentry CT.
Load limits: the lowest number wins
Read the Retrax ratings for what they cover. Both figures describe weight spread evenly over the closed cover, and neither RealTruck page gives a limit for a rack, for the T-slots or for a load in motion, on-road or off-road. The rack, its towers and whatever you strap on top have no cover figure to check against. Start from the rating the rack maker gives its tonneau mounting kit, and put the question to RealTruck before anything heavy goes up.
Treat the setup as a chain: the rack's rating for the way you'll drive, the kit or cover it rides on, your truck's payload and the tent or accessory maker's own limit. Never exceed the lowest of them. One PRO XR on a 3rd gen Tacoma, under a Yakima Outpost and a Tepui tent, is already at the off-road limit of both the Yakima tonneau kit and the Retrax rails; adding an awning would take it past that limit, and the owner suspects the aluminum tracks are what set it.
Do the sums before you buy the tent. Take a 150 lb tent as an example. On a TONNEAU it alone uses more than a third of the 400 lb on-road rating before pods, fuel or water go up. The cover rails carry the rack as well, though, and Leitner's TONNEAU weighs 85 lb by itself, so 235 lb sits on the rails before a single bag is loaded. That's more than the 200 lb RealTruck rates the ONE XR to carry spread across the closed cover. The cover figure isn't a rack limit, and with no rail limit printed, we wouldn't put that load on a ONE XR until RealTruck confirms the rails will take it. Those 235 lb also come out of the payload on your door-jamb sticker.
Leitner's TONNEAU on Retrax rails, and where both fit
If a tent rides on a PRO XR, Leitner's ACS FORGED TONNEAU is the rack we'd put under it. It bolts to the T-slot rails of the covers Leitner lists: the Retrax PRO XR and ONE XR, manual or electric, the Retrax EQ, and Pace Edwards' Explorer Series rails and UltraGroove. Leitner strongly recommends pairing it with a powered cover so the system keeps its full function. The PRO XR we pick is the manual cover, so ask Leitner what that costs you before you order.
Plan around the lower of Leitner's two pairs of numbers. The FAQ and the TONNEAU install guide rate it at 400 lb on-road and 800 lb parked, while the spec list on the same product page still shows 800 lb and 1,400 lb. Leitner gives no off-road number at all, explaining that because the rack is secured through the tonneau cover, it doesn't publish a safe off-road limit. Keep a loaded TONNEAU on pavement. Leitner's install guide puts the job at 2 to 3 hours, rates it intermediate and recommends a helper.
Check your truck against Leitner's restrictions before you buy the cover, because they're narrower than the PRO XR's. There's no TONNEAU part for the Maverick. Leitner rules it out on a Ram with RamBox or the multifunction tailgate, on a 2019-2024 Silverado 1500 with factory side storage boxes, and on a Tacoma or Tundra with Trail Special Edition bed storage boxes. Already own a FORGED? Leitner sells a rails-only kit that converts it to the TONNEAU.
Here's each truck we cover, with the PRO XR listings we confirmed on Amazon and the TONNEAU parts on Leitner's own fitment pages. Part numbers and cab restrictions sit in each pick's fitment rows.
Truck | RetraxPRO XR | Leitner TONNEAU |
|---|---|---|
F-150 (Gen14) | 5 ft 7 in (2021-2026) and 6 ft 7 in (2021-2025) | 5 ft 7 in and 6 ft 7 in (2022 on), SuperCrew and SuperCab |
F-150 (Gen13) | 5 ft 7 in and 6 ft 7 in | 5 ft 7 in (SuperCrew and SuperCab) and 6 ft 7 in (2015-2024, Regular Cab too) |
Silverado/Sierra 1500 (T1XX) | 5 ft 10 in, plus a CarbonPro listing, and 6 ft 7 in; the non-CarbonPro listings say they work with the MultiPro | 5 ft 10 in and 6 ft 7 in on the 2019-2024 Silverado 1500, not with factory side storage boxes; the GMC page lists the Sierra 1500 through 2026 |
Ram 1500 (DT) | 5 ft 7 in and 6 ft 4 in, not with the split tailgate; a RamBox listing that fits with or without it | 5 ft 7 in and 6 ft 4 in; not with RamBox or the multifunction tailgate |
Tacoma (4th gen) | Not confirmed on Amazon; RealTruck lists 5 ft and 6 ft 2 in parts | Short bed (Double Cab) and long bed, listed 2005-2026; short bed not with Trail Special Edition boxes |
Tacoma (3rd gen) | 5 ft 1 in and 6 ft 2 in | The same short and long bed parts |
Tundra (3rd gen) | 5 ft 7 in, 6 ft 7 in and 8 ft, all with the deck rail system | 5 ft 7 in CrewMax (not with Trail Special Edition boxes) and 6 ft 7 in, with or without the deck rails |
Maverick | 4 ft 6 in, which RealTruck calls 4 ft 4 in | No part |
Colorado/Canyon (2023 on) | 5 ft | 5 ft, listed 2015-2026 |
Ranger (2024 on) | Not confirmed on Amazon | 5 ft, listed 2019-2026 |
A Ram DT with the split tailgate is the hard case. The PRO XR's standard-bed listings don't fit it and the TONNEAU won't work with it, so only a RamBox truck has a PRO XR listing that takes the split gate, and then the TONNEAU is out. On a Tundra, every PRO XR listing we confirmed calls for the deck rail system. For a 4th gen Tacoma, search the PRO XR for your bed, match RealTruck's part number and check fit for your truck; the 2024-on Ranger is in the same spot.
When the rack belongs in the bed
Put the rack in the bed if the load is heavy and the road is rough. Leitner's ACS FORGED and its no-drill version, the NDNS, are rated 400 lb off-road, 800 lb on-road and 1,400 lb parked, and that off-road number is more than double the 180 lb Yakima publishes for the OverHaul HD on Tonneau Kit 1, the only cover-mounted setup we've reviewed with an off-road figure at all. You pay with the cover. Neither one goes under a cover as built: the FORGED takes one only after Leitner's rails-only kit turns it into a TONNEAU, and Leitner says the NDNS adapts to the TONNEAU too. From Leitner's product pages:
Spec | ACS FORGED | ACS FORGED NDNS | ACS FORGED TONNEAU |
|---|---|---|---|
Rear load bar | Slides forward with a twist of a knob | Fixed | Fixed |
Mounting | Rail clamps plus rear support arms on rivet nuts drilled into the bed walls; the Tacoma guide uses existing bed holes | Rail clamps, no rear support arms, no drilling | On a compatible cover's T-slot rails |
Off-road dynamic rating | 400 lb | 400 lb | None; Leitner says it can't recommend one |
On-road dynamic rating | 800 lb | 800 lb | 400 lb (FAQ and install guide; the spec list says 800 lb) |
Parked static rating | 1,400 lb | 1,400 lb | 800 lb (FAQ and install guide; the spec list says 1,400 lb) |
Install time (maker) | 2 to 3 hours | 1 to 2 hours | 2 to 3 hours |
Under a tonneau cover | Only with the rails-only conversion kit | Leitner says it adapts to the TONNEAU | Retrax PRO XR, EQ and ONE XR; Pace Edwards Explorer rails and UltraGroove |
Trucks we cover | All ten generations | All ten generations | All but the Maverick |
All three weigh 85 lb and hold the load bars 23 in above the bed caps. The sliding FORGED's rear support arms anchor to rivet nuts in holes you drill in the bed walls on every truck we cover except the Tacoma, whose guide uses holes already in the bed; with a spray-in liner, the guide has you cut it back around each hole. The NDNS clamps to the rails with no drilling and a fixed rear bar. The FORGED needs Leitner's GM Rear Support Bracket on 2019-on Silverado and Sierra 1500s, and it can't take a RamBox bed or the Ram multifunction tailgate.
The open bed doesn't have to mean loose gear. Leitner says all three versions work with the DECKED Drawer System, and DECKED says its drawers work with Leitner's floor-mounted supports, so tools can sit in drawers under the rack. Unless you buy DECKED's keyed locks separately, the drawers are only as secure as a locking tailgate. The uprights still stand in the bed, and a wide, flat load loses some floor to them. Height matters for ladders, too: if a ladder will span a cab rack and the Leitner's bars 23 in above the bed caps, measure both before you count on it lying flat.
Racks beside the cover: the Sentry CT and the Peragon
If boards, boats or bikes go up now and then and you want the full bed between trips, buy the TruXedo Sentry CT and carry the rack on TruXedo's Elevate rails. Nothing on the CT itself takes a rack, and RealTruck says nothing about racks for it, so this pairing is owner experience rather than a published spec. Owners run it with Elevate rails on surfboard and dirt-bike trucks. Buy the Elevate rails at the same time and install them together, since the rack rails sit nearer the bed sides than the cover's clamps do. Of every cover we've reviewed, the CT keeps a bed driest, and it alone gets a low reading from us for leak risk.
The Peragon Landmark has no rails on its panels either. Peragon lists overland racks and bed bars as compatible accessories; mount any rack that goes over it to the bed, following the rack maker's instructions, so the rack carries the load and the panels carry nothing. Peragon says nothing should ride on the cover while you drive, and its own limits, 300 lb spread out like snow and 50 lb concentrated, are for a parked truck. For this job we'd still take the Sentry CT, because it keeps the bed drier.
Fitting a rack to T-slot rails
The rails are aluminum, and they bend. Two owners bent the PRO XR's tracks by overtightening rack bolts, one of them on Yakima's tonneau kit. Tighten with a torque wrench to the value the rack maker and RealTruck specify for these rails rather than by feel; we leave the figures to them. Retrax shipped free replacement rails in one bent-rail case while saying the damage wasn't a warranty issue, which is goodwill you shouldn't plan on.
Check the adapter kit, not just the rack brand. A Kuat Ibex on a 4th gen Tacoma's 6 ft bed needed modified T-slot nuts to fit the Retrax rails, and modifying them may void Kuat's warranty. Confirm the kit is listed for your exact cover and bed length before you order the rack. The Retrax handle sits at the side of the cover, so if a rack's side panel blocks it, rig a pull line to open the cover from the tailgate.
Folders, soft covers and the T-slot versions
We wouldn't build a rack on any folder or soft cover we've reviewed, or on the Revolver X4s. Two makers rule it out in writing: Rough Country's compatibility chart answers no for bed racks on the Low Profile, and BAK's install sheets for the F1 and the Revolver X4s forbid tying cargo to the cover or its framework. Others are silent or give a rack nothing to stand on. There's no rack statement on RealTruck's Ultra Flex pages or for the Gator EFX, LEER sells no T-slot version of the HF650M, and the two soft covers, TruXedo's Lo Pro and the Tyger T3, carry no load rating at all.
For a rack on a BAK, the T-slot versions are the BAKFlip MX4 TS and the Revolver X4ts. Neither is a pick, because we haven't reviewed either one. If you shop them, check fit for your truck and ask RealTruck for the rack limit before anything goes up. Owner reports on the MX4 TS don't reassure us: a dealer-installed one on a 2025 Ram held standing water after its first car wash, and on Mavericks owners have had to readjust its rails again and again to get the last panel to latch. We rate the standard MX4's leak risk high.
Stand-alone rails under a folder are the other workaround, and we'd pass on it. TruXedo's Elevate rails can mount beneath a folder's own rails, but the folded stack may not finish opening against the crossbars unless they sit in the upper slot, and fitting the rails means taking the cover off and sealing it all over again. On one Maverick it took several reinstalls of an MX4 and its Elevate rails, plus weather stripping and putty, before the bed stayed dry.
What we'd put under a rack
For most racks, buy the RetraxPRO XR and a rack whose tonneau kit is listed for it, and keep the load under the lowest limit in the chain, not the cover's 500 lb. Add Leitner's TONNEAU if a tent lives up top and the loaded truck stays on pavement. Take the RetraxONE XR for the same rails if a polycarbonate cover, a 200 lb rating and one year of coverage are trades you'll accept.
If the tent goes off-road, stand a Leitner ACS FORGED in the bed and let the cover go, with DECKED drawers underneath if gear has to stay locked. And if the rack only comes out for the beach or the river, the Sentry CT on Elevate rails gives you the drier cover and the whole bed the rest of the week.

What owners say
Rack owners who carry the rack on the cover itself use Retrax's T-slot rails. A RetraxPRO XR owner runs Yakima Overhaul HD racks with a tent on top, a RetraxONE XR owner with a 5.5 ft bed accepts the canister for the track mounts and the side handle, and an owner who wanted a rolling cover went to a Retrax XR to carry an upTOP Overland rack. Folding-cover owners with Elevate rack rails describe a stack that can't open all the way past the crossbars and a bed that leaked through several reinstalls before weather stripping and putty fixed it. We'd put the rack on the PRO XR's rails, or in the bed if the load goes off-road.
“I have the retrax one xr in my 5.5ft bed. Yes it takes up some of the bed, but if I really need that space I'll use my bed extender. Or if I really really need room I'm going to rent a trailer from home Depot anyways. I like the track mounts for a rack and that you open and close it from the side.”
“Yeah, it's not bad, If I hadn't had the tri-fold I would have got a hard roll up. the tri-fold doesn't work very well, cannot open all the way, with the elevate rack unless you have them in the upper slot, which just looks weird. Thankfully it's easy to slid the tri-fold off the mounting rails for full access.”
“I have an area51 fx4 lariat with the TS elevate rail system and Bakflip MX4 tonneau cover. For the past two months of owning the vehicle and multiple reinstalls of my tonneau and ts rails, the tonneau has been leaking a ton. I finally solved my leaking issues with two products: channeled rubber weather stripping and some flexible black silicone putty.”
“I have the retrax pro xr with the Yakima overhaul HD racks. Have a tent on currently as well”
“I had to go with the Retrax XR to keep the rolling tonneau and still have the T rail tracks to hold my bed rack by Uptop Overland.”
