Verdict
Owners like the RetraxONE XR's looks, easy install, lock-anywhere latch and the T-slot rails, which carry Yakima and Kuat racks. Every owner who describes water reports some, at the canister end, the tailgate seam or both, and one fought a bad leak. Other complaints are the canister's lost floor space, one cracked cover, and a rattle. Few reports cover more than a year. We'd buy it as a rack platform for less than the PRO XR, knowing it won't keep the bed fully dry.

Similar tonneau covers
Buy the RetraxONE XR if you want T-slot rails for a rack on a retractable and don't want to pay for the aluminum RetraxPRO XR. Don't buy it for anything in the bed that can't get wet. It works the way the PRO XR does: the cover slides forward into a canister at the cab, T-slot rails on top take crossbars or a bed rack, and a lock holds it anywhere along the track. The difference is the cover itself. RealTruck builds the ONE XR as a one-piece aluminum-reinforced polycarbonate panel with no hinges, joints or slats, rates it at 200 lb evenly distributed and warranties it for one year. It's a good rack platform with a sealing problem at both ends of the bed.
Owners like how it looks, how easily it goes on and how well it carries a rack. Every owner who has reported on water found some getting in, at the canister end, the tailgate or both, and one fought a bad leak that never fully went away. The Retrax line is confusing, so to be clear: the RetraxPRO XR is the aluminum version with the same kind of rails, RealTruck lists a RetraxPRO MX without T-slot rails and an electric PowerTraxPRO MX, and there's a RetraxONE MX too. Reports about those covers aren't ONE XR evidence, and where we mention one, we say which cover it is.
The short version
What works:
- Rails for less: T-slot rails on a retractable, noticeably cheaper than the PRO XR on every matching listing we compared. Owners run Yakima and Kuat racks on them, and a Rhino-Rack setup is going on a 4th gen Tacoma.
- Lock anywhere: it locks at any point along the track, so you can close it down on a load that sticks out past the tailgate.
- Install: clamp-on, with RealTruck quoting under 60 minutes and no drilling for the cover itself. Owners call it easy.
- Weight: lighter than the aluminum PRO XR by one owner's estimate, though RealTruck doesn't publish either weight.
What to watch:
- Water: expect some. The canister end and the tailgate seam are where it gets in.
- Bed space: the canister takes roughly a foot off the front of the bed at full height, which hurts most on a Maverick or a midsize short bed.
- Ratings: 200 lb evenly distributed and a one-year warranty, against the PRO XR's 500 lb and limited lifetime coverage.
- Small faults: a crack within the first year on a cover whose owner had been shopping the ONE XR (Retrax covered it; the model isn't named), and a little rattle on the road.
Which trucks and beds it fits
Retrax sells one ONE XR part number per truck, bed and configuration, and Amazon lists them the same way. We confirmed the fitments below on each listing's own product page; the table under the score panel has the part numbers and bed lengths in inches.
- F-150: we confirmed listings for the Gen13 (2015-2020) only: a 5 ft 7 in SuperCrew and SuperCab listing and a 6 ft 7 in listing that adds the Regular Cab. RealTruck lists parts for the 14th-generation F-150 (Gen14, 2021 on) in both bed lengths, but we didn't confirm one on Amazon, so check fit for your truck with the search link in the picks.
- Silverado and Sierra 1500 (T1XX): the 5 ft 10 in listing works with the MultiPro and Multi-Flex tailgates and isn't for the CarbonPro composite bed, which has its own listing. Amazon lists the short box as 5 ft 10 in (69.9 in); RealTruck calls the same part the 5 ft 8 in bed, so match by the inch figure. The 6 ft 7 in listing (RealTruck's 6 ft 6 in part) also works with those tailgates but not with the factory side storage boxes, and its title and fitment line disagree on the last model year (2023 vs 2022). Confirm yours before you order.
- Ram 1500 (DT): 5 ft 7 in and 6 ft 4 in listings, and neither fits the multifunction split tailgate. Neither listing names the body style, so confirm it's for the DT and not the 2019-2024 Ram 1500 Classic, which is a different truck. RealTruck has a RamBox part too, which we didn't confirm on Amazon. We didn't find a ONE XR part for a split-tailgate DT; the BAKFlip MX4 has a split-tailgate listing for the 6 ft 4 in bed.
- Tacoma: the 3rd gen (2016-2023) has a 5 ft 1 in Double Cab listing and a 6 ft 2 in listing for Regular, Access and Double Cab. RealTruck lists 4th gen (2024 on) parts for the 5 ft and 6 ft 2 in beds, and lists the 5 ft part for trucks with the deck rail system. A 4th gen Double Cab long bed owner calls the fit perfect, but we haven't confirmed a 4th gen listing on Amazon.
- Tundra (3rd gen), Maverick and Colorado/Canyon: 5 ft 7 in and 6 ft 7 in Tundra listings, both for trucks with the deck rail system, a 2022-2025 Maverick listing and a 2023-2025 Colorado and Canyon 5 ft listing, which RealTruck calls the 5 ft 2 in bed.
The 2024-2025 Ranger has a RealTruck part for trucks without the cargo management system, but no confirmed Amazon listing, so it's a search link too. On a Tacoma, RealTruck says the bulkhead tie-downs come out for good so the canister fits, while the cover's brackets mount in the deck rails, so you keep the rails with less room to slide the cleats. Some listings disagree on the last model year, so confirm yours.
The specs that matter
Here's the ONE XR against the aluminum PRO XR, TruXedo's Sentry CT hard roll-up and the BAKFlip MX4 hard folder, from RealTruck's own product pages:
Spec | BAKFlip MX4 | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|
Rated load | 200 lb, evenly distributed | 500 lb, evenly distributed | 400 lb, evenly distributed | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
Warranty | 1 year, original buyer, not transferable | Limited lifetime, original buyer, not transferable | 5 years on rails, clamps, bows and fabric, original buyer, not transferable | 5 years, original buyer, not transferable |
Cover | One-piece aluminum-reinforced polycarbonate; no hinges, joints or slats | Double-wall aluminum slats | Interlocking aluminum slats under a canvas top | Aluminum top panels with high-density polymer cores |
Lock | Key-lockable in any position along the track | Keyed latch that locks at any position along the track | Level-2 locks, a tension cable and up to six automatic latches | Auto-latch locks on closing; no keyed lock |
Drains | Integrated drain tubes | Integrated drain tubes | Not described on RealTruck's page | Channels along the rails feed drain tubes |
Rack rails | T-slot rails; RealTruck doesn't say how far they run | T-slot rails the full length of the cover | None on the cover | None on the standard MX4; the MX4 TS adds T-slot rails |
Opened | Slides into a canister at the front of the bed, which takes space for good | Slides into a canister at the front of the bed, which takes space for good | Rolls to the cab and straps; RealTruck says 100 percent bed access | Against the cab; RealTruck says it leaves the third brake light clear |
Install time (maker) | Under 60 minutes | Under 60 minutes | 30 minutes or less; spec block says less than 1 hour | 30 minutes or less |
All four clamp on with no drilling for the cover on most trucks, per their makers, and none has a published weight. The two Retrax covers share the canister, the T-slot rails, the integrated drain tubes and the clamp-on install; the ONE XR page adds a spiral track in its canister. Against the PRO XR, the ONE XR's lower price costs you 300 lb of rating and the lifetime warranty. A Tundra owner with a loaded truck thinks the ONE XR is around 20 to 30 lb lighter than the RetraxPRO, which is an estimate, not a spec.
Check the warranty against RealTruck, not Amazon. Twelve of the 13 ONE XR listings we confirmed on Amazon carry warranty bullets written for other Retrax covers: some name the RetraxPRO MX and its lifetime guarantee, others the RetraxONE MX. RealTruck's own ONE XR page says one year from the original purchase date, and that's the term we'd plan around. It doesn't transfer, so a used one comes with none.
Check the load rating before you load the rails. 200 lb evenly distributed means weight spread across the closed cover. RealTruck publishes no rack, T-slot or dynamic (on-road or off-road) limit for the ONE XR, and the PRO XR page doesn't publish one either. So a rack, crossbars, a cargo box and whatever's in it have no cover rating to check against. Use the rack maker's rating for its tonneau mounting kit and ask RealTruck before you add anything heavy. An owner with a 2017 Ram 1500, the older body rather than the DT, says theirs is strong enough to stand on. A standing adult is a point load, and the published figure is for weight spread evenly, so we wouldn't.
The canister costs floor space too, and RealTruck doesn't publish its footprint. Measured on a ONE XR, the open space under it is 8.5 in high at its lowest and 10.5 to 12.5 in deep, with 36.5 in between the drains, so the canister takes roughly a foot off the front of the bed at full height. That's in line with what PRO XR owners measure. On the Maverick listing's 54.4 in bed, losing about 12 in leaves around 42 in of full-height floor. The space underneath still works: it's unobstructed, and three or four sheets of plywood should fit over the wheel wells.
Weather sealing and leaks
This cover lets water in, at the canister end and at the tailgate seam, and we'd plan for both. A Maverick owner who tested theirs thoroughly found leaks at both ends, with most of the bed staying dry. An added seal mostly fixed the tailgate. Nothing fixed the canister, where the water comes in right next to the built-in drain holes and stays within a few inches of the cab, so that owner won't store electronics in the bed. Months later they called it not as water resistant as they'd like, but good enough in most conditions.
The worst case is a 2019 Tacoma cover that leaked badly from behind the storage box at the front, not from the drain holes. A higher-quality weather seal from a home store made it a bit better but still subpar, and the warranty department wasn't much help. At the tailgate, a 2017 Ram owner who loves their cover says it can take one or two sprays with a hose to get it seated, or you'll get a slow drip at the seam. That owner doesn't name the model but is answering a question about the ONE XR, so we count the report. The weather stripping on another newly installed cover, model also unnamed, didn't seem to reach all the way side to side.
Route the drain tubes out of the bed before the first rain and keep them clear, check the tailgate seal with a hose before you trust the bed, and keep anything that can't get wet in sealed bins up front. A RetraxONE MX owner on the Oregon coast saw no water after the first wash, but that's a different model a week in, so we don't count it.
We've left the leak-risk gauge off this one. Three water reports, one of them from 2019 and one from an owner who doesn't name the model, are too few to set it honestly. The weather-sealing score carries the verdict instead, and it's below 6 because all three describe water. We have no ONE XR reports on snow, ice or a hard freeze. The owner of a similar retractable on an old S10 spent hours with hot water and a heat gun getting it open in winter. If you park outside in snow country, expect some freeze-ups and follow Retrax's care instructions instead: don't force it, tap gently by hand around the edges and keep de-icer to the key lock.
Build quality and living with it
The polycarbonate is the reason to buy this over the PRO XR, and the reason some shoppers hesitate. We think it holds up fine for normal use. A Maverick owner found it very sturdy from the start and, about ten months in, reports no issues despite throwing all kinds of stuff on top while working outside. The quality is good, and a cover bought new at the beginning of 2023 was still in perfect working condition when its owner put it up for sale, without saying why. The negatives are fewer and more specific.
- A crack: a Maverick owner who had been shopping the ONE XR found a crack in their cover, and Retrax covered it under warranty. That owner doesn't name the model and had also looked at add-on rails, so it may be a different Retrax. With a one-year warranty, a crack in year two is on you.
- Hail: the only hail report is secondhand, from a shopper who saw a broken one after a storm. Shoppers worry about polycarbonate in hail and about it warping. If you park outside where hail is common, that's an argument for the aluminum PRO XR, though PRO XR owners haven't reported on hail either.
- Rattle: the Ram owner says it rattles a bit on the road. It isn't loud, but with the windows down you'll notice it.
- The lock: RealTruck says it's key-lockable in any position, and locking it at any length along the bed is a useful option. We'd still like a locking latch on both sides.
Heat cuts the other way for some buyers. An Arizona owner chose the plastic ONE XR because the aluminum covers seemed likely to get too hot, and runs a Kuat Ibex rack on the T-slots, but hasn't said how the cover has held up in the sun. RealTruck's page lists a textured matte black finish and gives no UV or heat rating for the ONE XR.
Racks are where this cover earns its keep. A Tacoma owner with the 5 ft bed runs a Yakima Overhaul HD, chosen because it's easy to take on and off. A Maverick owner moving across the country used Yakima TrackTowers to carry the family Subaru's crossbars plus a cargo box, and says the whole cover is quick to remove when something big needs to go in. A Tundra owner picked it over the BAK Revolver X4s for a planned rack. Whatever rides in the rails can't go past the clamps, though a Maverick owner says that still leaves a good amount of range.
How it compares
- Versus the RetraxPRO XR: the same family with the same T-slot rails, drain tubes and clamp-on install, but with double-wall aluminum slats rated 500 lb evenly distributed and a limited lifetime warranty. It cost more than the matching ONE XR on every truck-and-bed pair we compared. Buy the PRO for the aluminum, the higher rating and the warranty. Buy the ONE XR to get the rails for less and accept the plastic and the one-year term. PRO XR owners report water too, most often at the side rails, so the aluminum doesn't buy you a dry bed.
- Versus the TruXedo Sentry CT: a hard roll-up with aluminum slats under a canvas top, rated 400 lb evenly distributed with a 5-year warranty. It rolls up against the cab instead of into a canister, and on most listings it lifts out without tools, so you can get the whole bed back. Its owners report a drier bed than ONE XR owners do, and it cost less on every matching pair we compared. Some Sentry CT owners run TruXedo's Elevate rack rails with it, but RealTruck publishes no rack rating for the cover, so pick the ONE XR if T-slot rails on the cover itself are the plan.
- Versus the BAKFlip MX4: a hard folder rated 400 lb evenly distributed with a 5-year warranty, and the cheapest of these on every matching pair we compared. It folds to the cab instead of sliding into a canister, and the tailgate works with the cover shut. MX4 owners report leaks too. The standard MX4 has no rack rails; BAK sells a T-slot version, the MX4 TS.
Installing it
RealTruck quotes under 60 minutes with no drilling, and owners call it easy. One person can do it with basic tools and a little time. On a 4th gen Tacoma it took an owner who's quick at these jobs about an hour and a half, slowed by a clamp bolt that cross-threaded. Run the steel bolts through the aluminum rail clamps before you install them, and follow RealTruck's install guide for your part number.
The drain tubes are the variable, and they can mean drilling. RealTruck says the cover itself needs no drilling, but on a Maverick you'll need about a half-inch hole in the bed for the drain hoses, or you can widen one of the existing drain holes near the cab. If you drill, treat the bare metal so it doesn't rust, and follow RealTruck's guide for where the tubes go. On a Tacoma, expect to pull the bulkhead bar to add foam pads and remove the bulkhead tie-downs for good. Then spray the closed cover with a hose and look for drips at the tailgate seam and behind the canister before you load anything that matters.
Should you buy the ONE XR?
The RetraxONE XR is the retractable we'd buy if you want T-slot rails for a rack and don't want to pay PRO XR money for them. It installs easily, locks anywhere along the track and carries owners' racks without complaint. Plan on sealed bins near the cab, a hose test at the tailgate, and a cover with a one-year warranty.
If you don't need the rails, the Sentry CT keeps the bed drier by its owners' accounts and costs less. If you park outside in hail or want a lifetime warranty under your rack, pay for the PRO XR.
Our Ratings
Overall score
Every owner who describes water gets some, at the canister end, the tailgate seam or both. An added seal mostly fixed one tailgate but not the canister, and a bad leak from behind the canister on a 2019 cover only partly answered to a new seal. Too few reports to set the leak-risk gauge, but none of them describes a dry bed.
The polycarbonate feels very sturdy and has shown no issues about ten months in with things loaded on top, and a cover bought new in early 2023 was in perfect working condition when its owner sold it. Against that: a crack within the first year (covered by Retrax) on a cover whose model isn't named, a secondhand hail report, a rattle on the road, and a one-year warranty.
It's noticeably cheaper than the PRO XR on all 13 matching listings. It still costs more than a Sentry CT or MX4 on every pair we compared, with a lower load rating, a shorter warranty, and a bed that every owner reporting on water says still gets wet.

What Reddit owners say
“It's a perfect fit on my 2024 Tacoma SR5 Double Cab LWB. The install took about an hour and a half but I'm pretty quick with these things. I reccomened running the steel bolts through the aluminum bed rail clamps before installing as I was having issues with cross threading on one of them. This is the RetraxOne so it has a polycarbonate top unlike the aluminum RetraxPro. It has the XR T-rails which I will be installing some low profile Rhino Racks but that will be later.”View thread →
“Added a RetraxONE XR bed cover then used Yakima Tracktowers to mount thr cross bars that usually go on our Subaru. Cargo box is a bit long for the bed but thats fine. Will get us there. Also means both vehicles will fit in parking garages and keep MPG up. Super quick and easy install for everything. Wasnt sure i wanted to lose the space due to the retrax but its reaply not yoo bad. Plus the whole cover is quick to remove if i really need to move something big.”View thread →
“I have the 5' bed and went with the Retrax One XR and a Yakima Overhaul HD rack. Chose the Yakima because it's easy to take on and off as needed.”View thread →
“I just recently purchased and installed the RetraxONE XR tonneau cover and it is leaking water like crazy. It’s not coming from the drain hole areas either I can see it dripping from the back behind the storage box.”View thread →
