Best Hard Folding Tonneau Cover: Ultra Flex First, LEER for Security

Independent editorial guide. We never accept payment for coverage, though we may earn a commission if you purchase through our links.

Quick Take

Buy the UnderCover Ultra Flex. It's the hard folder we'd put on most trucks: rated 400 lb evenly distributed, backed for 5 years, and when you fold it to the cab the stack stands upright on prop rods instead of leaning on your rear glass. It keeps water out about as well as any folder we've reviewed, and it has listings for nearly every truck we cover, RamBox and multifunction-tailgate Rams included.

Pick another folder when the job calls for it. The LEER HF650M has the best latch, a 450 lb rating and no drain tubes, for less money, on a 3-year warranty from a maker that has dropped it from its own site. The Armor Flex is the Ultra Flex with a coated top for owners who load the lid. On a budget, the Gator EFX and the Rough Country Low Profile are hard and lockable for far less, but only the rear two-thirds folds. And if you need your rear window or the driest cover we've reviewed, skip folders and buy the TruXedo Sentry CT, a hard roll-up.

Five folders, five jobs. Under each pick you'll find only the truck and bed listings we confirmed on Amazon. See picks ↓

Best Hard Folding Tonneau Cover: Ultra Flex First, LEER for Security

A hard folding cover is a set of hinged panels, three on a tri-fold and four on a quad-fold, that clamp to the bed rails and fold toward the cab. It locks with your tailgate, sits flat and low, and gives back most or all of the bed when you fold it up. The trade is what happens once it's folded: on a full folder the stack stands in your rear window on prop rods that can fail, and on the budget designs the front panel doesn't fold at all.

Put the UnderCover Ultra Flex on most trucks. No other folder we've reviewed pairs a water record this good with a 5-year warranty and listings for this many trucks. The LEER HF650M wins on the latch, the drain-free design and the price, the Armor Flex on the top coating, and the Gator EFX and Rough Country Low Profile on price alone. The BAKFlip MX4, the folder most owners shop first, isn't a pick: too many arrive leaking.

Match the listing to your truck, bed and tailgate before you buy; the same cover is a dozen different parts.

The best hard folding cover for each job

Each of these folders wins one job outright.

  • Best overall: the UnderCover Ultra Flex. Half of its owners who mention water report a dry bed, most of the rest a little in one spot or one kind of weather, and the folded stack stands off the cab and glass on prop rods. The 5-year warranty and confirmed listings for every truck we cover except the 2024-on Ranger make it the safe default.
  • Security and no drain tubes: the LEER HF650M. A coat hanger won't fish its CYNC latch open, and the latch lets go only with the tailgate down. LEER rates it at 450 lb evenly distributed, the most of our five picks, and says its water management needs no drain tubes. It cost less than the Ultra Flex on every same-bed listing we compared. The catches are a 3-year warranty, no RamBox or multifunction-tailgate Ram fit, and a maker that no longer lists it on its own website.
  • A top you use: the UnderCover Armor Flex. Same fold, prop rods, rating and warranty as the Ultra Flex, under a textured coating that shrugs off scratches when you slide gear across the closed cover. It costs more, and nobody has shown the coating does better in hail, so don't buy it as hail insurance.
  • Budget: the Gator EFX. Flush aluminum panels, slam latches and a 300 lb rating for far less than the name brands. Only the rear two-thirds folds, the warranty is 2 years, and a damp corner after hard rain is normal.
  • Budget on a 3rd gen Tacoma, Tundra, Maverick or Colorado: the Rough Country Low Profile. Better water reports than the EFX and a 5-year warranty on Rough Country's site, but no published load rating, a front panel you unbolt for the full bed and only four trucks with a confirmed listing.
  • A rack on the cover: none of our five picks. Among folders, BAK's MX4 TS has T-slot side rails for a rack; see the rack section below.

All five clamp on with no drilling on most trucks, per their makers, and none has a published cover weight or a keyed lock of its own, so each one is as secure as your tailgate. A truck without a factory tailgate lock needs one added.

None of the load ratings is a step rating. Each figure assumes the weight is spread over the entire closed cover, which a person kneeling on one panel or a loaded cooler on a seam is not, and Rough Country publishes no figure at all, so treat its panels as a lid, not a deck. Every maker that mentions snow and ice says to clear them before you open the cover.

What a folder costs you: the stack, the window and the tailgate

The fold is the spec you live with, and the folders split three ways.

  • Full fold on prop rods: the Ultra Flex and the Armor Flex fold all the way to the cab and hold the stack upright on prop rods, clear of the glass. The Ultra Flex's stack sticks about 8 in into the bed by one owner's estimate, roughly 12 percent of a 67.1 in F-150 short bed. Standing right behind the cab, it still blocks much of the view out the back, and on a 2020 truck with a camera rear-view mirror it covers that camera.
  • Four short panels: the LEER's panels are shorter, so its stack stands lower. Split evenly on the 5 ft 6 in bed, each panel is about 16 to 17 in long, against about 22 in for a three-panel cover, which is why the LEER's listing says the window and third brake light stay visible. Its weak spot is the plastic clips that hold the prop rods, which break; LEER will send new ones.
  • Two-thirds only: the Gator EFX and the Rough Country Low Profile fold the rear two panels and strap them down, and the front panel stays put. Your rear window stays clear, but the front of the bed stays covered: about 22 in of a Gen14 F-150 short bed on the EFX, about 20 in of a 3rd gen Tacoma's 5 ft bed on the Low Profile. For the full bed, the EFX comes off without tools; the Low Profile unbolts, and one owner puts taking it off at about five minutes.

If you haul dirt bikes, furniture or anything tall at the front of the bed, the two-thirds covers will have you pulling the cover often, and that's where the EFX's tool-free removal earns its keep. Rough Country's product page says you can drive with the Low Profile two-thirds open on its straps, while its install manual says never to drive with a cover partly open; we'd follow the manual on the highway.

The tailgate matters on the full folders. The Ultra Flex's listings say the tailgate opens and closes with the cover shut, and RealTruck gives the Armor Flex a dual-function tailgate seal that does the same. LEER says its cover latches with the tailgate open or closed. We couldn't find a statement either way from Gator or Rough Country, so try the tailgate with the cover shut before the return window closes. BAK's cheaper G2 makes you lift its rear panel before you shut the tailgate.

Drain tubes, seals and a dry bed

No folder keeps a bed bone dry through every car wash, and our leak-risk gauge reads moderate on all five picks. The Ultra Flex and the LEER keep water out best among the folders we've reviewed. The Armor Flex runs a touch behind its smooth-topped sibling, the Low Profile is roughly level with the Ultra Flex when it's installed square, and on the EFX a damp corner after hard rain is normal. The BAKFlip MX4 is the outlier: we rate its leak risk high, mostly at the front corners by the rear window and then the tailgate end.

Drain tubes are the folder's plumbing, and they're where drilling comes in. A flush folder like the MX4 sits level with the bed rails, so water lands on the cover and has to be carried away, along channels to tubes at the front of the bed. On a 4th gen Tacoma the MX4's tube is twice the diameter of the bed's drain hole, so you drill or fit a reducer; on a Tundra, MX4 owners enlarge the drain holes and leave the tubes long so the water clears the frame. Route every tube all the way out of the bed before the first storm and keep them clear. If a drop-in liner covers your drain holes, plan the routing before you clamp the rails, and if a hole has to be drilled, the install guide for your cover decides where.

The LEER skips all of that. LEER says its water management needs no tubes, and it ships a small packet of putty to fill any seam in the bed near the cab before you clamp the rails. RealTruck's Ultra Flex page doesn't describe the drain setup at all, so follow its install guide for your truck.

The fixes are the same on every folder. Square the rails, seat the front seal fully against the bulkhead, add a tailgate seal kit if water comes in at the gate, and hose-test the cover one zone at a time before you load anything that matters. On the EFX, don't run silicone along the cab end to stop a drip: it glues the front panel down and you lose the quick removal. If the bed has to stay bone dry, you need a camper shell, not a folder.

Security, latches and racks

Every folder here locks the same basic way: the panels latch as they close and release, by cable or latch, only once the tailgate is down. Where they differ is how easy that release is to reach from outside. The LEER's CYNC latch is the one we trust, because it can't be fished open with a coat hanger, and that's the main reason to pick it over the Ultra Flex. BAK's pull cables are the weak point owners complain about on the MX4. None of these is a safe; a determined thief with a crowbar still gets in.

Racks are where folders fall short. RealTruck's Ultra Flex page says nothing about racks, LEER has no T-slot version, the Rough Country chart says no to bed racks, RealTruck lists no rack compatibility for the EFX, and BAK's own install sheet for the F1 says not to tie cargo to the cover or its framework. If you want a rack on a folder, BAK's MX4 TS adds T-slot side rails for one; check fit for your truck, and get the rack limit from RealTruck before you load it. The TS carries the MX4's leak record, too: the owner of a dealer-installed TS on a 2025 Ram came back to standing water in the bed after its first car wash. One Tacoma owner whose BAKFlip lacks the T-slot rails says they regret not buying the TS.

If the rack matters more than the fold, look past folders. The RetraxPRO XR, a retractable, carries T-slot rails from end to end and a keyed latch that holds the cover shut anywhere along its track. Its canister costs you about a foot at the front of the bed for good.

A few traps sit behind those cells. On a Ram, the LEER won't work with a RamBox or the 60/40 multifunction tailgate, per LEER, and its listings don't say DT or Classic, so confirm the truck with the seller; among our picks, the Ultra Flex is the one with listings for both. On a 3rd gen Tundra, the Ultra Flex's 5 ft 7 in listing excludes the Trail Special Edition storage boxes, and the Armor Flex listings name only 2022 while RealTruck lists the short-bed part for 2022-2026, so have the seller confirm your year. LEER's fitment selector asked about Toyota's deck rails without publishing an answer.

The Ranger is the EFX's trap. Both Amazon EFX listings for the Ranger read 2019-2025, but RealTruck lists those parts for 2019-2023 and sells a separate part for the 2024-2025 Ranger, so on a 2024 or newer truck search for the 2024 Ranger EFX, buy by RealTruck's part number and check fit for your truck. On a Silverado or Sierra, the short bed goes by 5 ft 8 in, 5 ft 10 in or 69.9 in depending on the seller, so match the listing by the inch figure. On a Colorado or Canyon, Rough Country says the Low Profile doesn't fit the Trail Boss because of its factory sport bar.

When a roll-up is the better buy

Skip folders altogether if the rear window matters to you every day. A hard roll-up rolls to the cab and leaves the glass clear, and the TruXedo Sentry CT is the one we'd buy: our top-rated cover, the driest we've reviewed and the only one with a low reading on our leak-risk gauge. RealTruck rates it at 400 lb evenly distributed, backs it for 5 years and says it opens 100 percent of the bed. If you haul a dirt bike, bicycles or anything you want to watch in the mirror, it's the better cover.

It has its own habits. Close the tailgate before the cover, because the CT's rear seal rests on top of the gate, and TruXedo support says not to drive with the gate down and the cover shut. It also cost more than the Ultra Flex on every same-bed listing we compared. BAK's hard roll-up, the Revolver X4s, rolls the same way with no drain tubes to route, though getting it seated takes fuss.

Stay with a folder if you want the tailgate to work under a closed cover, if you'd rather lift the panels off for a big load than live with a roll at the cab, or if your budget points at the EFX or the Low Profile, which cost far less than the name brands.

The BAKFlips and other folders we reviewed

  • BAKFlip MX4: the folder most owners shop first, with a flush look, a 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty and a tailgate that works with the cover shut. We rate its leak risk high, and that keeps it off our list. Folded, its stack leans back toward the rear window, and the prop rods that hold it tend to pop out. It's the rack-ready folder through the MX4 TS, and the EZ-Lift version adds a lift assist up front. Against the Ultra Flex at about the same price, we'd take the Ultra Flex.
  • BAKFlip G2: BAK's cheaper folder, rated 300 lb with a 3-year warranty. It cost less than the MX4 on every same-bed listing we compared, and its water record reads no worse. The catch is the tailgate: you lift the rear panel before you shut it. If you open the bed a few times a week, buy the G2 over the MX4; many times a day, the MX4. A BAK Box 2 tool box works under a G2 on a Gen14 F-150, where BAK's redesigned MX4 rails no longer take it.
  • BAKFlip F1: the MX4's rating, warranty and independent tailgate under a fiberglass-reinforced top, and it cost less than the MX4 on six of the seven same-bed pairs we compared. The panels draw the complaints, from a top surface that broke down early to panels that soaked up water, and the owner record is thin, so we haven't set a leak-risk reading. RealTruck offers no F1 for the Maverick.

Our head-to-heads go deeper on the closest calls: the MX4 against the G2, where the tailgate decides it; the MX4 against the Ultra Flex, where the drier bed decides it; and the Ultra Flex against the Armor Flex, where the coated top decides it.

Which folder goes on your truck

Most trucks should wear the Ultra Flex. It seals as well as any folder we've reviewed, stands off your glass when it's open, carries a 5-year warranty from a company that still sells it, and has a listing for nearly every truck we cover. Take the LEER instead if a latch nobody can fish open, or the lower price, matters more to you than warranty years, and the Armor Flex if gear rides on the lid.

On a budget, the Gator EFX is the hard folder we'd buy, and on a 3rd gen Tacoma, Tundra, Maverick or Colorado the Rough Country Low Profile is worth a look if you'll leave it on. Both cost you the front third of the bed. If you'd rather keep your rear window than the fold, buy the Sentry CT.

Gator EFX Hard Tri-Fold Tonneau Cover
Budget pick

Gator EFX Hard Tri-Fold Tonneau Cover

The budget hard folder we'd buy: flush aluminum panels, slam latches and a 300 lb rating for far less than the name brands. Only the rear two-thirds folds, the cover comes off without tools for the full bed, and the warranty is 2 years.

Rough Country Hard Low Profile Tri-Fold Tonneau Cover

The budget folder for a 3rd gen Tacoma, Tundra, Maverick or Colorado: better water reports than the EFX and a 5-year warranty on Rough Country's site. No load rating, the front panel unbolts, and the title must say Low-Profile.

What owners say

Folder owners argue about the rear window, the latch and the water. An owner of several BAKFlip MX4s puts its bed access at 90 to 95 percent but says the folded stack blocks the rear window. A Raptor owner who hauls a dirt bike and likes to see it through the back glass got about five years from an MX4 before leaks started, and now runs a BAK Revolver X4s roll-up. On security, one MX4 has been broken into with a coat hanger three times, and its hinge rubber was cracking at two years. A short-term LEER HF650M owner credits its double seal for keeping the front dry with no drain tubes, and an Ultra Flex owner had a smooth install and likes the cover so far. We'd pick by the job first, then buy the listing for your exact truck, bed and tailgate.

“I had the mx4 on my raptor, no digital mirror on the raptor, but personally I still would like to look out my back window to see the cargo, I haul a dirtbike quite frequently so I like to have a quick visual. The mx4 held up pretty well for about 5 years and then I started to get some leaks. The x4s is too new to give a verdict.”

“I’ve had several Bakflip MX4 covers and it’s not technically 100% bed access but it’s certainly not 75% either. Maybe more like 90-95%. But with the cover folded and standing upright to allow that much of the bed to be uncovered, it does block your rear window if that matters to you.”

“Watched it the night before my Ultra Flex arrived, and my install went smoothly! Loving the cover so far.”

“I have the MX4- the cables are the weak point. pretty easy to break into with a coat hanger. It's been broke into 3 times now. Mine is 2 yrs old & is already starting to crack at the rubber hinges.”

“The Leer HF650M uses a double seal and doesn't require drain tubes. (It also does the best job of keeping water out at the front).”
