Best Retractable Tonneau Cover: RetraxPRO XR, Peragon for Bed Space

By Dale Okonski · Updated October 2026

Independent editorial guide. We never accept payment for coverage, though we may earn a commission if you purchase through our links.

Quick Take

Buy the RetraxPRO XR. Of the retractables we've reviewed, it's the one we'd trust with a rack on top: double-wall aluminum slats rated 500 lb evenly distributed, T-slot rails along the whole cover, a keyed latch that holds anywhere on the track and a limited lifetime warranty. The catches: it's the priciest cover here, the canister claims roughly a foot at the front of the bed for as long as the cover stays on, and on most trucks a little water still gets in along the side rails.

Go another way when the job says so. The Peragon Landmark has no canister at all; its panels fold down at the cab end of the bed and come out of the truck entirely, and Peragon sells it direct, so we earn nothing on it. The RetraxONE XR gives you the same rails for noticeably less, on a polycarbonate cover with a one-year warranty that lets water in at both ends. And if you don't need rails on the cover, the TruXedo Sentry CT, a hard roll-up, keeps the bed drier and costs less than either Retrax.

Four retractables and the roll-up that often beats them. Each pick lists only the truck and bed fits we confirmed on the listing or the maker's page. See picks ↓

Best Retractable Tonneau Cover: RetraxPRO XR, Peragon for Bed Space

A retractable cover slides or folds toward the cab instead of hinging up, so the rear window stays clear and you can usually stop it part-way open. You pay in bed space. The Retrax covers park their slats or panel in a canister across the front of the bed, and the Peragon stacks its panels down into the same spot. In exchange, the best of them lock securely and carry a rack on T-slot rails.

For most owners shopping this style, the RetraxPRO XR is the cover to buy, above all if a rack is coming. The RetraxONE XR is the cheaper way into the same rails, the Peragon Landmark is for owners who refuse to give up the front of the bed for good, the Pace Edwards Full Metal JackRabbit buys a lifetime warranty for less than the PRO XR, and the TruXedo Sentry CT, a hard roll-up rather than a retractable, is the better buy for anyone who doesn't need rails at all.

Each pick is sold as a separate part for every truck and bed, so check the fitment rows under each pick against your own truck before you order.

The best retractable for each job

Pick by what will ride on the cover and how much of the front of the bed you can spare.

  • Best overall: the RetraxPRO XR. Aluminum slats, T-slot rails from end to end, a latch that locks the cover shut at any point along the track and a limited lifetime warranty for the original buyer. It's the strongest retractable we've reviewed and the priciest, and the canister stays in the bed as long as the cover does. Expect a little water along the side rails on most trucks.
  • Rails for less: the RetraxONE XR. The same rails, canister and drain tubes over a one-piece polycarbonate cover, noticeably cheaper than the PRO XR on all 13 matching listings. RealTruck rates it at 200 lb evenly distributed instead of 500 and warranties it for one year, and owners find water at the canister end and the tailgate.
  • No canister: the Peragon Landmark. Its 14-gauge aluminum panels fold accordion-style down into the front of the bed and come out without tools, so nothing is left behind when you need every inch. Plan on a damp edge after hard rain and on keeping cargo out of the space the panels fold into.
  • Not a retractable, often the smarter buy: the TruXedo Sentry CT. If rails on the cover aren't part of the plan, this hard roll-up is drier, cheaper and leaves no canister behind. It has its own section below.
  • Lifetime coverage for less: the Pace Edwards Full Metal JackRabbit. An all-aluminum manual retractable with a key-lockable twist lock, lock points every 12 in and a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner on the original vehicle, for less than a RetraxPRO XR. No rack rails on the standard cover and no published load rating. Owners report some water getting in, as with every slatted retractable. Our Pace Edwards JackRabbit review has the full owner record.

Peragon is the only one of the four to publish a weight: 35 lb for the panels on most models. The three RealTruck covers clamp on with no drilling on most trucks, per RealTruck. The Landmark's mount depends on the edition and the truck. Peragon's product page lists no-drill Quick Clamps on the Classic, Platinum and LimitedHD, the LimitedHDx bolts into the BoxLink holes on Fords, and Peragon's Canyon page says the 2023 and 2024 models need drilling. Its FAQ still describes the Classic as a bracket install, so confirm the mount for your truck before you order one.

The PRO XR is the most expensive here. The ONE XR cost less on every matching listing we compared, and the Sentry CT cost less than either Retrax on every matching pair. Peragon prices by edition: on the Gen14 F-150 short bed, every Landmark edition costs less than the PRO XR, and the Sentry CT's price falls inside the Landmark's range. The PRO XR's extra money buys aluminum over plastic, 300 lb more rating and a lifetime warranty in place of one year.

What the canister costs you, truck by truck

A retractable has to put the cover somewhere when it's open. RealTruck doesn't publish the size of the Retrax canister, so every figure here is an owner's tape measurement, not a RealTruck spec: about 12 by 12 in on a Tundra, and about 13 in off the top of a 4th gen Tacoma bed with about 18 in of height underneath. One ONE XR owner measured the open space under theirs at 8.5 in high at its lowest and 10.5 to 12.5 in deep. We applied the largest figure, 13 in, to every truck below, so read the results as a cautious estimate of the full-height floor left behind the canister:

Truck and bed

F-150, 6 ft 7 in

On a long bed it's a smaller bite. On a Maverick or a midsize short bed, a fifth to a quarter of the length goes to the canister. The floor underneath still earns its keep with low or flat cargo, such as camp chairs, a short tote or straps, and three or four sheets of plywood should slide in over the wheel wells under a ONE XR. Two more costs show up on specific trucks. A Gen14 F-150 short bed loses its front tie-down anchors and the inner pair of BoxLink holes on each side under the canister, which pushes front tie-downs back to the outer holes. On a Tacoma, RealTruck says the bulkhead tie-downs come out for good so the canister fits.

The Landmark trades the fixed canister for a moving stack. By Peragon's figures, the folded panels come out about 6 in from the front wall and hang 10 to 11 in down into short beds, 11 to 12 in into longer ones, with open floor beneath them. The difference is that the stack needs that space every time you open the cover, so a tote that slides forward will stop it. A bed divider or a cargo bar keeps the space clear, and when you need the whole bed, the panels come out and stay home.

If your bed is loaded to the front wall most days, neither design suits you. Look at the Sentry CT, which rolls up against the cab with nothing hanging into the bed.

Rails, racks and the latch

T-slot rails are the reason to choose a Retrax XR. Both carry them, and owners run Yakima, Kuat, Rhino-Rack and upTOP Overland racks, crossbars and ladder racks on them. Neither has a rack rating. The 500 lb and 200 lb figures cover weight spread evenly over the closed cover, and RealTruck publishes no rack, T-slot or dynamic (on-road or off-road) limit for either one. A rack, a cargo box or a rooftop tent therefore has no cover number to check against. Get the limit for the rack maker's tonneau mounting kit from the rack maker, and ask RealTruck before you load up.

Leitner is the rack maker we've reviewed that publishes figures for this setup. Its ACS TONNEAU rides on the rails of the covers Leitner lists, among them the RetraxPRO XR and RetraxONE XR (manual or electric) and two Pace Edwards rail systems, and Leitner strongly recommends a powered cover. Leitner's FAQ and install guide rate it at 400 lb on-road and 800 lb parked, though the product page's spec list still shows 800 lb and 1,400 lb. It has no off-road rating: the rack is secured through the tonneau cover, so Leitner doesn't publish a safe off-road limit. Plan around the lower pair and keep a loaded TONNEAU on pavement.

Treat the rails gently. Two owners bent the PRO XR's aluminum tracks by overtightening rack bolts, so use a torque wrench and the figure the rack maker and RealTruck give you for these rails, not feel. Fit isn't always plug-and-play either: on a 6 ft Tacoma bed, Kuat's adapter needed modified T-slot nuts, which may void the rack warranty. Confirm the adapter kit is listed for your exact cover and bed before you order the rack.

The Landmark has no rails on the cover. Peragon lists overland racks and bed bars as compatible accessories; if one goes over the cover, mount it to the bed by the rack maker's instructions so the rack carries the load, not the panels. Peragon says nothing should ride on the cover while you drive, and its own limits are 50 lb concentrated and 300 lb spread out like snow, with the truck parked.

The latch is the other Retrax strength. Both XRs lock with a key at any point along the track, so you can close the cover down on a load that sticks out past the tailgate or leave a gap for a cord. RealTruck says the PRO XR's cover and tailgate open and close independently, in any order. Locking the tailgate doesn't lock the bed on a Retrax, because the cover still slides open; turn the key on the cover itself whenever you walk away. The Landmark's keyless lock on the LimitedHDx, by one owner's account, stays shut while the tailgate is locked, and the other editions use keyed deadbolts.

Leaks, drain tubes and winter

None of these retractables keeps a bed fully dry, so plan on some water whichever one you buy. Our leak-risk gauge reads moderate on the PRO XR and the Landmark. We haven't set it on the ONE XR because too few owners report on water, though every one who does reports some. The water finds a different way in on each:

  • RetraxPRO XR: along the side rails first, where water collects in the channels and runs under the cover, then at the tailgate seam. Bad leaks are the exception.
  • RetraxONE XR: at the canister end, sometimes right beside the built-in drain holes, and at the tailgate seam until the cover is seated. An added seal mostly fixed one tailgate; nothing fixed that owner's canister.
  • Peragon Landmark: at the edges of the bed and between the panels, where EPDM rubber seals each joint. The rubber lets more water in as it ages, and Peragon sells replacement pieces.

Drain tubes are where a Retrax install can turn into drilling. Both Retrax covers have integrated tubes that carry water out of the canister toward the bed's drain holes. Some installs set the tubes by the weep holes and drill nothing; others run them through holes drilled in the plastic plugs at the front of the bed, and on a Maverick the ONE XR's hoses need about a half-inch hole in the bed or a widened drain hole near the cab. Cut the hoses to length so they don't back up, keep them on and clear, and check that every screw is still in the canister. RealTruck's install guide for your part number decides where any hole goes, and bare metal needs treating so it doesn't rust. The Landmark has no canister and no drain system, so its seals do all the work.

Before you trust any of them with gear, hose-test the side rails and the tailgate seam, add a tailgate seal if the gate end drips, and keep electronics and paperwork in sealed bins. If nothing in the bed can get wet, no cover here is the answer; our leaking tonneau cover guide walks through the fixes zone by zone.

Winter brings the odd frozen morning. RealTruck says the PRO XR is tested from -40 to 180°F, and a fleet of nine RetraxPRO covers without T-slots on Upper Midwest work trucks saw only occasional freeze-ups through daily freeze-thaw cycles. When a Retrax does freeze, Retrax's care instructions say not to force it: tap gently by hand around the perimeter, use de-icer only in the key lock, and keep de-icer off the cover. Clear snow and ice before you open any of these covers, and don't lubricate the Retrax rails or sealed ball bearings, which RealTruck says voids the warranty. Peragon says the Landmark's open design won't freeze up; brush it off before opening anyway, because the folding stack carries snow into the bed. Where heavy snow sits on the truck for days, the ONE XR's 200 lb rating is a reason to skip it. Our winter guide has the full routine.

The split-tailgate Ram DT without a RamBox is the hardest truck here. We didn't find a listing for it from either Retrax, Peragon only says a Right On Bracket handles the multifunction tailgate from 2025 on, and the Sentry CT is the one pick with confirmed split-tailgate listings. On the GM trucks, Amazon calls the short bed 5 ft 10 in while RealTruck calls the same part 5 ft 8 in, so match by the inch figure. Peragon says nothing about the MultiPro or Multi-Flex tailgate, so ask before you order.

Some fits exist at RealTruck without a confirmed Amazon listing. For those, search the ONE XR for a Gen14 F-150, the PRO XR for a 4th gen Tacoma or the Sentry CT for a 4th gen Tacoma, match RealTruck's part number and check fit for your truck. The RealTruck RamBox part for the ONE XR, the 2024-on Ranger parts for both Retraxes and the Sentry CT's Ranger and Colorado/Canyon parts fall in the same group.

When the Sentry CT is the better buy

If you came to retractables for a locking hard cover and don't need rack rails on it, buy the TruXedo Sentry CT instead. It's a hard roll-up: aluminum slats under a canvas top that roll against the cab and strap there, with no canister in the bed, and RealTruck calls that 100 percent bed access. Most versions lift out without tools. It's the driest cover we've reviewed and the only one with a low reading on our leak-risk gauge. RealTruck rates it at 400 lb evenly distributed and backs the rails, clamps, bows and fabric for 5 years, and it cost less than both Retrax covers on every matching listing we compared.

The rails and the tailgate are what you give up. RealTruck publishes no rack statement for the CT, and some owners add TruXedo's Elevate rack rails beside it; a Tundra owner who hauls dirt bikes went that route rather than live with a PRO XR canister. Shut the tailgate first and the cover second, since the CT's rear seal sits on top of the closed gate; TruXedo support also says not to drive with the gate down and the cover closed. If you need a cover that locks anywhere along the bed, or one that carries a rack on its own rails, stay with a Retrax.

BAK Revolver X4s, the other hard roll-up we've reviewed, also rolls to the cab with no canister. BAK also sells a T-slot version, the Revolver X4ts, which we haven't reviewed; check fit for your truck if a rack on a roll-up appeals.

Roll-N-Lock, Pace Edwards and other retractables

We've reviewed the Roll-N-Lock M-Series and the Pace Edwards JackRabbit. Roll-N-Lock's A-Series and Retrax's MX covers we haven't, so they aren't picks. Here's what their makers publish and what's on record.

  • Roll-N-Lock M-Series and A-Series: RealTruck's other manual retractables. The M-Series is vinyl over aluminum slats, the A-Series dual-layer aluminum slats, and the XT version of each adds T-slot rails. RealTruck lists the canister at 7.25 in deep, against the 12 to 13 in owners measure for the PRO XR's, though one block on the same page says 8 in and RealTruck doesn't say which way it's measured. They latch in three positions instead of anywhere, the M-Series tailgate still locks separately, and the 3-year warranty excludes water intrusion. One Roll-N-Lock owner, model not named, had theirs freeze shut after washes often enough to sell it for a cap. We'd put an M-Series on a short or midsize bed that carries tools, bags and groceries more often than plywood, and not on a bed that has to stay bone dry. Our Roll-N-Lock M-Series review has the full record; for the A-Series, search the A-Series XT and check fit for your truck.
  • Pace Edwards: the JackRabbit comes in two versions, the all-aluminum Full Metal with a limited lifetime warranty for the original owner on the original vehicle and the ArmorTek overlay version with a 5-year limited warranty. The Full Metal is the one we'd buy, and it's a pick above. Neither publishes a rated load, and both warranties exclude water intrusion. Our Pace Edwards JackRabbit review has the fitment and owner record. Leitner lists Pace Edwards' Explorer Series rails and UltraGroove among the covers its TONNEAU rack rides on. An owner who has run both found a Pace Edwards on an F-150 more waterproof than a RetraxPRO.
  • Retrax's other covers: RealTruck also sells the RetraxPRO MX, the same cover family without the T-slot rails, plus an electric PowerTraxPRO MX and a RetraxONE MX. Reports about those aren't evidence for the XRs. Skip the rails entirely and the PRO MX is the Retrax worth pricing.

Which retractable we would put on your truck

Put the RetraxPRO XR on a truck that will carry crossbars, a rack or a tent on the cover. You get aluminum slats, rails end to end, a latch that locks anywhere and a lifetime warranty, at the highest price here and with a canister you'll load around. Before the first trip, get a rack limit from the rack maker and RealTruck.

Choose the RetraxONE XR for the same rails for less money if plastic, a 200 lb rating, one year of coverage and water at both ends are acceptable. Choose the Peragon Landmark if the front of the bed matters more to you than a rack on the cover, and the Full Metal JackRabbit for a lifetime warranty on aluminum slats without rack rails. And if neither rails nor a retractable is the point, the Sentry CT keeps the bed drier for less.

What owners say

Retractable owners weigh the same three things: rails, bed space and water. A RetraxPRO XR owner puts theirs at about 95 percent waterproof, a bit damp after an automatic car wash, and warns that it pulls dust into the bed on fast dirt roads. A Tacoma owner who ran a PRO XR under a Yakima rack on a short bed passed on a retractable for the next truck, a long bed, to keep the bed space. An F-150 Tremor owner likes how the Peragon fan-folds into the bed, comes out completely and locks without a key, but says it isn't fully watertight. On a RetraxONE XR, the T-slot nuts from a Kuat rack adapter kit didn't fit the rails. Our reviews of each cover carry the full owner record on leaks and long-term wear. We'd choose by whether a rack rides on the cover first, then by how much of the front of the bed you can give up.

“I have the ReTrax Pro XR and am pretty happy with it. It’s probably 95% waterproof. Gets a bit moist in an automatic car wash but not bad. It definitely creates a dust chamber at higher speed dirt if that’s an issue for you.”

“I have a peragon on my ‘25 Tremor. Love that it fan-folds into the bed if I need more space. Also quick to remove completely and locks securely without a key. Dislike that it isn’t 100% water tight.”

“I had the the Retrax Pro XR on my short bed 3rd gen with Yakima Overhaul HD on top. For my Trailhunter long bed, I didn't want to lose the bed space to a retractable cover.”

“I have the retraxone but the retrax t slot nuts from thr kuat adapter kit dont fit my t slots”
