Verdict
X4s owners mostly like the cover once it's installed. The few who describe water report a dry bed or a little near the tailgate, none describes wet cargo, and owners who came from Retrax covers call it drier. They praise the one-hand roll, the clear rear window and the full bed. The complaints are about fit and install: front corners that won't lie flat, rear edges that sat proud at the tailgate, a bulkhead seal that bound on Ridgelines, and a 2026 Tundra whose tailgate jams on the bracket. Reported failures include a cover blown off its rails at 13 months and seals that failed in a year, and BAK sells parts only through warranty claims. The longest X4s report is three years. We call it a dry, easy cover with a fussy install and a short record.

Similar tonneau covers
Buy the BAK Revolver X4s if you want a hard cover that rolls out of the way, keeps your rear window clear and opens with one hand, and you're willing to fuss over the install. Aluminum slats sit under a one-piece matte vinyl top, so it stores as a tight roll at the cab instead of a tall stack of panels. Once it's seated right, owners love living with it. Getting it seated right is where the complaints pile up: a front corner that won't lie flat, a bulkhead seal that binds, a bracket that jams a 2026 Tundra's tailgate. It also costs more than the TruXedo Sentry CT on most matching listings for much the same job, and we think the CT is the safer buy unless you want a vinyl top.
Get the name right before you shop. BAK, now sold as RealTruck BAK, makes several Revolver covers that look alike. The X4ts adds T-slot rails for racks and tents, and its part numbers end in RK. The X2 is the cheaper model, with a 60-grade DualShield vinyl instead of the X4s's 70-grade TriShield and a 3-year warranty instead of 5. The older Revolver X4 is the predecessor, and owners say the X4s swapped its felt pads for rubber. Peeling tops and delaminating felt on X4 covers belong to that model, so we kept them out of the X4s's record here.
The short version
What works:
- Bed access and the rear window: it rolls into a strapped roll at the cab with no canister, and RealTruck says it doesn't block the rear window or factory cameras. Owners who've run a tri-fold first don't miss lifting heavy panels.
- One-hand operation: pull the release cable at the tailgate end and roll it forward.
- Water: on the dry side. Most X4s owners who describe water report a dry bed, the rest describe a little getting in, and nobody describes wet cargo.
- Security: aluminum slats RealTruck calls slash-resistant, with rotational locking rails and automatic slam latches. RealTruck calls it the most secure hard roll-up in its class, on its own Level-3 scale.
- Warranty: 5 years for the original buyer, and BAK has replaced whole covers rather than argue.
What to watch:
- The install: covers that won't sit flush at a front corner, rears that sit proud at the tailgate and bulkhead seals that bind. Most of it is fixable; some covers have gone back under warranty.
- Ram multifunction tailgate: RealTruck says the 5 ft 7 in X4s isn't compatible with it. The Sentry CT has listings that are.
- Rack rails: there aren't any. That's the X4ts.
- Price: more than the Sentry CT on most matching listings and more than the BAKFlip MX4 on nearly all of them.
- Parts: BAK sends parts only as warranty replacements, so a part you broke yourself can mean a new cover.
Which trucks and beds it fits
BAK sells one X4s per truck and bed, and Amazon lists them the same way, so match the exact listing before you order. We confirmed every fitment below on the listing's own product page.
- F-150: separate parts for the Gen13 (2015-2020) and the Gen14 (2021 on), each in 5 ft 7 in, 6 ft 7 in and 8 ft 2 in. The Gen14 5 ft 7 in listing includes the Raptor and Lightning, and the Gen14 8 ft 2 in listing's title says 2021-2025 while its fitment bullet says 2021-2024, so confirm 2025 fit with the seller. Buy the one listed for your year.
- Silverado and Sierra 1500 (T1XX): 5 ft 8 in (69.9 in), 6 ft 7 in (79.4 in) and 8 ft 2 in listings, all of which say they work with the MultiPro and Multi-Flex tailgates. The 5 ft 8 in won't fit the CarbonPro composite bed, which has its own listing (Amazon calls it 5 ft 9 in, 68 in). RealTruck's page for the 5 ft 8 in part says it won't work with GM's factory bed storage boxes.
- Ram 1500 (DT): 5 ft 7 in and 6 ft 4 in listings, all marked 2019-2026 without naming the body style, so confirm they're for the DT and not the 2019-2024 Ram 1500 Classic. RealTruck says the 5 ft 7 in part isn't compatible with the multifunction split tailgate and won't work with the TRX bed bar, which has to come off. A second 5 ft 7 in listing says w/RamBox in its Amazon title, but RealTruck's own page for that part says nothing about RamBox, so confirm with the seller before you order. If you have the multifunction tailgate, look at the Sentry CT instead.
- Tacoma: 3rd gen (2016-2023) in 5 ft 1 in and 6 ft 2 in; RealTruck's page for the 5 ft 1 in part says it won't work with the factory bed storage boxes. 4th gen (2024-2026) in 5 ft and 6 ft. RealTruck says the 5 ft version needs Toyota's deck rail system, which Toyota sells if your truck lacks it, and the 6 ft listing is for trucks with the factory track system.
- Tundra (3rd gen): 5 ft 7 in and 6 ft 7 in listings for 2022-2026. RealTruck's pages for both parts say they work with or without the deck rail system and won't work with the Trail Special Edition storage boxes. On a 2026 Tundra, check the tailgate before you finish the install; more on that below.
- Maverick: one listing for 2022-2026. The listing calls the bed 4 ft 6 in, while RealTruck calls it 4 ft 4 in.
- Colorado and Canyon (3rd gen): one 5 ft 2 in listing for 2023-2026, and RealTruck says it works with the factory sport bar.
RealTruck also lists a 5 ft 1 in X4s for the 2024-2025 Ranger and Ranger Raptor, but we didn't confirm an Amazon listing, so it appears in the picks as a search link. RealTruck's listing for that part says 2024-2025, so confirm a 2026 Ranger with RealTruck. Check fit for your truck before you buy. RealTruck says nothing about spray-in liners. With a drop-in liner, use the thinner bulkhead seal from the kit, and some drop-ins need trimming, covered under installing.
The specs that matter
RealTruck rates the X4s at 400 lb evenly distributed and says it installs in an hour or less with no drilling, using clamps. It doesn't publish the cover's weight or how big the roll is when the cover is open.
Here's the X4s against the hard roll-up, the retractable and the hard folder it gets shopped against, from RealTruck's own product pages:
Spec | ||||

All four clamp on with no drilling on most trucks, per their makers, and none has a published weight. Against the Sentry CT, the X4s matches the rating and the warranty length and swaps the canvas top for vinyl. Against the Retrax, it gives back the canister space for noticeably less money, and gives up 100 lb of rating, the T-slot rails, the lifetime warranty and a lock that holds the cover part-way open. Against the MX4, it trades a folding stack and drain tubes for a roll with no folds.
The construction is interlocking aluminum slats under a one-piece, aluminum-reinforced vinyl top that RealTruck calls TriShield 70-grade, with matte black slats, clamps and hardware. Flush side seals run along the rails and an adhesive bulkhead seal goes on the front wall of the bed. Because the top is one piece, there are no fold seams for water to find, and no foam panels to soak it up.
Read the 400 lb rating as a parked number. It means weight spread across the closed cover, and RealTruck's install sheet says not to drive with objects on top of the cover and not to tie cargo to the cover or its framework. A kneeling adult or the corner of a cooler is a point load, which the rating doesn't cover, and the X4s isn't a rack base.
Check how much bed the roll takes before you count on full access. RealTruck says you get full bed access with the cover rolled and strapped, and doesn't give the roll's size. One owner puts it at maybe 8 in, and a Ridgeline owner hates how much room it takes. If 8 in holds, a Maverick's 54.4 in bed keeps about 46 in clear behind the roll and a Gen14 F-150's 67.1 in bed about 59 in. The RetraxPRO XR's canister, at about 13 in by owner measurements, leaves about 41 in and 54 in, and it reaches down into the bed. If you need every inch, the X4s comes off its rails with four hand knobs, though lining it back up afterward can take an hour.
Weather sealing and leaks
The X4s keeps a bed mostly dry, and when water does get in, it's a little. Three of the five X4s owners who describe water report a dry bed, on trucks including a 4th gen Tacoma and a Tundra, and the other two describe a little getting in, one cover mainly near the tailgate. Nobody describes wet cargo, and most of these covers are months old, not years. Owners who moved to the X4s from Retrax covers call it drier, though neither names the current PRO XR.
RealTruck's marketing calls it the most leakproof of all folding, roll-up and retractable covers. We wouldn't repeat that as fact, and RealTruck's own install sheet is more modest: the cover is not airtight, and it asks you to take special care to keep cargo clean and dry. We'd go with the install sheet. The design does help: with no folds there are fewer places for water to get in. RealTruck describes no drain tubes, and none are in the parts list, so there's nothing to route or keep clear.
Fit decides how dry yours stays. A rear edge that doesn't sit flush with the tailgate often means the cover sits too far forward, and sliding it back with the four hand nuts made one cover fit better. A front corner that rides up near the rear window is common on new covers, and a gap there is a gap in the seal. Seals on a Honda Ridgeline failed within a year, and BAK honored the warranty without much fuss. On another Ridgeline the bulkhead weatherstrip bound up until it was trimmed with BAK's written go-ahead.
Winter evidence is thin, and it splits. An owner who parks outside in a harsh climate likes the X4s and points out there's nothing in it to absorb water, and a Nova Scotia owner has run one through three winters by brushing the snow off and knocking loose ice by hand. A Tacoma owner ripped theirs off after it froze shut and broke when forced open. Clear heavy snow before you roll it, and don't force a frozen cover. We're leaving our leak-risk gauge blank: five reports, most of them short-term, aren't enough to set it.
Build quality and living with it
Once it's sitting right, the X4s is easy to live with. The track record is short, though. The longest X4s report is three years on a Sierra parked outside in Houston heat with no issues, and most owners are writing at a few months. The failures that do show up are fit and hardware: a cover the wind blew off its rails after 13 months, and one lifting at the front on the interstate, which its owner planned to reinstall to find the mistake.
- Daily use: one hand, one cable, and the cover rolls forward and straps at the cab. Watch your fingers as it rolls; the listing says the aluminum underbody is concealed to protect your hands, but pinches still happen.
- Lying flat: new covers can take a while to settle, and sun speeds it up. Not all of them get there. One still binds and won't latch at the high spot months later, and a Tundra owner was waiting on a third cover, sent by RealTruck under warranty, after the first two did the same thing.
- Care: owners use a vinyl protectant like 303 on the top; check BAK's care instructions first, and keep it off the rubber seals. On one cover the treated seals got so slippery the cover wouldn't roll tight, and it took isopropyl alcohol to strip them.
- Security: RealTruck calls the slats slash-resistant, and the locking rails hold the sides down. There's no keyed lock, and the release cables sit at the tailgate end, so lock your tailgate. It's open or closed: unlike a Retrax, it won't lock part-way to hold down a load.
- Warranty and parts: 5 years for the original buyer, not transferable. BAK has shipped whole covers, including X4s upgrades for failed covers of the older X4, sometimes asking you to destroy the old one and send photos. It won't sell parts outside a warranty claim, and an owner missing one rubber pad was told to buy a new cover.
How it compares
- Versus the TruXedo Sentry CT: the same hard roll-up idea with a canvas top over the slats, the same 400 lb rating and a 5-year warranty that covers the fabric. Buyers split on the top: the CT for the cloth look, the X4s for no fabric at all. They mount differently: the TruXedo sits on its own rails, while the BAK moves the rails and uses the mounting bolts. The CT cost less on 11 of the 14 matching truck-and-bed listings we compared, lifts out without tools on most versions, has a deeper record of dry beds and has listings for the Ram multifunction tailgate. We'd buy the CT unless the vinyl top is the point.
- Versus the BAKFlip MX4: BAK's hard folder, with the same rating and warranty. It cost less than the X4s on 10 of the 11 matching listings we compared, and its tailgate opens and closes with the cover shut. It has drain tubes, but MX4 owners describe more leaks, and its folded stack cuts into the rear window view. Owners who've run both disagree: one finds the X4s far easier to open and close, another calls it less rigid than the MX4.
- Versus the RetraxPRO XR: a hard retractable with T-slot rails, a 500 lb evenly distributed rating, a lifetime warranty and a lock that holds at any point along the track, at a noticeably higher price on every matching listing. Its canister takes space at the front of the bed for good. Buy it if you need a rack on the cover.
- Versus the TruXedo Lo Pro: a soft vinyl roll-up, noticeably cheaper, with a limited lifetime warranty from RealTruck. It rolls to the cab the same way but has no slats, so it has no published load rating and won't stop a blade.
- Versus BAK's X2 and X4ts: the X2 shares the X4s's install sheet with a 60-grade DualShield vinyl and a 3-year warranty, for less money. The X4ts is the one to buy if you want a rack or a tent on T-slot rails.
Installing it
Plan on an afternoon and be pleased if it takes the hour RealTruck quotes. RealTruck rates it a Level 1 simple install with no drilling. Its install sheet calls for a 9/16 in wrench or socket, scissors or a utility knife and isopropyl alcohol. Six clamps hold the rails (eight on 8 ft beds), hand-tightened to the 10 ft-lb figure on RealTruck's sheet, which warns that overtightening can warp the bed cap. Leave the side gap the sheet calls for so the locking rail engages. Use the 3/4 in bulkhead seal without a drop-in liner and the 1/4 in seal with one; with a drop-in, remove the foam pads at the front of the slotted brackets, and some drop-ins need trimming at the corners.
Owners who call the install straightforward still hit snags, like a front corner that won't sit flush. On a Honda Ridgeline it took four hours, a Torx bit that wasn't in the box and a bulkhead weatherstrip that bound on both sides until it was cut, and supplemental instructions said to remove the top tie-downs. The lesson carries to any truck: if the weatherstrip binds, get BAK to tell you in writing where to cut it, because your 5-year warranty is at stake. If the rear sits proud at the tailgate, slide the cover back with the four hand nuts before you blame the cover. On a 2026 Tundra with the automatic tailgate, check that the rear bracket clears the tailgate; one owner's often jams it so tight the tailgate won't release. Follow RealTruck's install sheet for your part number.
Who the X4s is for
Buy the X4s if you want a locking hard cover, don't want fabric on top and are tired of lifting tri-fold panels or losing your rear window to the stack. It seals well enough for most owners, it opens with one hand, and BAK stands behind it with replacement covers when one goes wrong.
Pick something else if you have a Ram multifunction tailgate, need rack rails (the X4ts or the RetraxPRO XR) or want the strongest dry record at this money: the Sentry CT costs less on most listings and has more owners reporting a dry bed. Whichever you buy, set aside more than an hour for the install.
Our Ratings
Overall score
Most X4s owners who describe water report a dry bed, and the rest describe a little getting in, one mainly near the tailgate, never wet cargo. RealTruck's own install sheet says the cover isn't airtight. Thin, short-term evidence and fit faults that open gaps keep it below the Sentry CT.
One cover ran three years parked outside in Houston heat with no issues, and most owners are happy a few months in. Against that: a cover the wind pulled off its rails at 13 months, seals that failed in a year and covers that never sat flat. BAK replaces covers under warranty, but the X4s's record is short.
It costs more than the Sentry CT on most matching listings and more than the BAKFlip MX4 on nearly all, for the same 400 lb rating and 5-year warranty, and it's well under a RetraxPRO XR. Parts come only through warranty claims, and the install can eat an afternoon.

The evidence behind our verdict
