Folding vs Retractable Tonneau Cover: Bed Space, Racks and Water

Quick Take
For most trucks, buy a hard folder, and make it the UnderCover Ultra Flex. With the panels down it costs you no bed at all; folded, it stands on prop rods across about the first 8 in of floor, by one owner's estimate. On every matching listing we compared it was cheaper than both Retrax covers, and it carries 400 lb evenly distributed, a 5-year warranty and the same moderate reading on our leak-risk gauge as the RetraxPRO XR. The price you pay is the rear window, which the folded stack mostly hides.
Go retractable when the cover has to carry a rack, when loads need it stopped part-open, or when you want a clear rear window every time the bed is open. The RetraxPRO XR is the one: T-slot rails along the full cover, a keyed latch that locks anywhere on its track, 500 lb evenly distributed and a limited lifetime warranty. Nothing here costs more, and owners measure its canister at 12 to 13 in of the front of the bed, gone for as long as the cover is installed. If you want the clear window and the whole bed but carry no rack, the TruXedo Sentry CT hard roll-up gives you both, and it's the one cover here our gauge reads low on leak risk.
Two folders, two retractables and a roll-up between them; each lists only the truck and bed fitments we checked on the listing itself. See picks ↓
A hard folder is a set of hinged panels that stack up toward the cab. A retractable rolls its slats, or slides its one-piece lid, into a canister mounted across the front of the bed. All five of our picks latch shut, publish a load rating and clamp to the bed rails on most trucks without drilling the cover in. What separates them is where the cover ends up when it's open, and almost every tradeoff below comes from that.
We'd put a folder on most trucks, and on any short bed where the front foot of floor gets used. A retractable earns its canister when a rack rides on top or when you want a cover that stops wherever you leave it. Our hard folding cover guide and retractable cover guide rank the covers within each style; here the two styles go head to head.
Each cover is a different part number for each truck and bed length, so match your truck to the rows under a pick before you order.
Folder or retractable: pick by the job
Start from what the bed does most weeks.
- Rack on top: retractable. Both Retrax XRs carry T-slot rails on the cover, and neither folder we pick has any.
- The full bed, often: folder. Shut, it takes nothing, and folded, the Ultra Flex stands in about 8 in at the cab. A Retrax canister keeps 12 to 13 in, by owners' measurements, whether the cover is open or shut.
- Loads that stick out or need a gap: retractable. It locks part-open; a folder latches only when it's shut.
- The rear window: retractable or hard roll-up. A folded stack stands behind the glass.
- A Maverick or midsize short bed: folder, unless a rack decides it. On those beds a 13 in canister takes a fifth to a quarter of the floor length.
- A dry bed: neither style wins. Our gauge reads moderate on both of the covers we'd put first, while the Sentry CT roll-up, covered below, reads low.
- The lowest cost: folder. Both of our folders cost less than either Retrax on every matching listing.
The five picks side by side
Each column is the maker's published spec unless noted (the LEER's fold is from its Amazon listing); the leak-risk row is our gauge from each review:
Spec | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Type | Hard folding | Hard folding | Retractable | Retractable | Hard roll-up |
Cover | Matte black aluminum over a high-density polymer core | Fiberglass-reinforced plastic polymer panels; textured matte black finish | Double-wall aluminum slats | One-piece aluminum-reinforced polycarbonate; no hinges, joints or slats | Interlocking aluminum slats under a canvas top |

Leak risk (our gauge) | Moderate | Moderate | Moderate | Not set; too few reports | Low |
None of the five makers publishes a weight for the cover. By the makers' own accounts all five clamp on without drilling the cover itself on most trucks, though drain tubes can still put a hole in the bed (see the water section). Each load rating assumes weight spread across the whole closed cover, so none of them speaks to a rack, someone kneeling on one panel or a cooler parked on a joint.
Bed space: a folded stack against a canister
A folder only costs bed space while it's open. Closed, the panels lie flat on the rails. Folded, the Ultra Flex's stack stands across roughly the first 8 in of floor, one owner's estimate rather than an UnderCover figure. A Retrax is the reverse: its canister sits across the front of the bed whether the cover is open or shut. RealTruck doesn't publish the canister's size, and owners measure it at 12 to 13 in off the top of the bed, so the table uses the cautious 13 in. Here's what that leaves on four beds:
Truck and bed | Bed length (listing) | Floor left, Ultra Flex folded (8 in, one owner's estimate) | Full-height floor left, Retrax (13 in, owner measurements) |
|---|---|---|---|
Maverick | 54.4 in | About 46 in; 15 percent taken | About 41 in; 24 percent taken |
Tacoma (3rd gen), 5 ft 1 in | 60.5 in | About 52.5 in; 13 percent taken | About 47.5 in; 21 percent taken |
F-150, 5 ft 7 in | 67.1 in | About 59 in; 12 percent taken | About 54 in; 19 percent taken |
F-150, 6 ft 7 in | 78.9 in | About 71 in; 10 percent taken | About 66 in; 16 percent taken |
The canister column is the worst case for tall cargo, and the folder column only applies with the cover folded. Low cargo still fits under a canister: owners measure about 18 in of clearance beneath one on a 4th gen Tacoma and 8.5 in at the lowest point under a ONE XR, enough for camp chairs, ratchet straps or a short tote. Two trucks lose more. On a Gen14 F-150 short bed the canister blocks the front tie-down anchors plus, on each side, the BoxLink pair nearest the cab, and on a Tacoma RealTruck has you remove the bulkhead tie-downs permanently. Not every owner adjusts: one PRO XR owner took the cover off, sold it and bought a fiberglass topper because the bed had lost too much room.
The LEER stacks lower than a tri-fold. LEER doesn't publish panel lengths, but split a 5 ft 6 in bed four ways and each panel is about 16 to 17 in, against about 22 in with three, so its folded stack stands shorter behind the cab. On a Maverick or a midsize short bed we'd buy a folder unless a rack settles it. On a 6 ft 7 in bed the canister takes about a sixth of the length, and a retractable gets much easier to justify.
Rear window, part-open loads and the tailgate
Stopping anywhere is the retractable's best trick. RealTruck says TraxLatch holds the PRO XR open in unlimited positions and its keyed latch locks at any point on the track, and the ONE XR is key-lockable in any position as well. RealTruck also says you can cinch gear between the cover and the tailgate, so a bundle of lumber running out past the gate can ride under a cover pulled down onto it. A folder opens a panel at a time and only latches once it's fully shut, so anything tall means folding to the cab and strapping the load. Read your folder's manual before driving with it half-folded; at least one maker's install manual says never to.
The rear window splits along the same line. A Retrax disappears below the glass and leaves it clear. A folded stack sits right behind the glass: the Ultra Flex hides much of the view out the back, plus the camera on a 2020 truck with a camera-based mirror, while the BAKFlip MX4's stack leans back toward the glass and on a Colorado leaves no view out the back at all. Among folders the LEER is the exception; its listing says the window and the third brake light stay visible. If you keep an eye on bikes or a dirt bike in the mirror, put that ahead of the spec sheet.
Only two of our picks have a maker or listing saying the tailgate works under a closed cover. Per RealTruck's PRO XR page, cover and tailgate open and close independently and in any order, so you can reach gear near the gate without dropping it, and the Ultra Flex's listings say its gate opens and shuts with the cover down. LEER doesn't say either way; it says only that the HF650M latches with the tailgate open or closed. Among folders, BAK's cheaper G2 is the one where the rear panel has to come up before the gate shuts.
Racks and locks
A rack on the cover means a retractable. The PRO XR's T-slot rails run its full length, and the ONE XR carries T-slot rails too, though RealTruck doesn't say how far they run. Neither of our folders takes a rack: RealTruck's Ultra Flex page is silent on racks, and LEER makes no T-slot version. The folder with T-slot side rails is BAK's MX4 TS; we haven't reviewed it, the standard MX4 reads high on our leak-risk gauge, and you'll need to check fit for your truck before ordering.
Don't read either Retrax rating as a rack limit. The 500 lb and 200 lb numbers are for weight spread across the shut cover, and RealTruck gives no rack, T-slot or on-road figure for either, so take the limit from the rack maker's tonneau-kit instructions and check with RealTruck before a rooftop tent or cargo box goes up. Leitner, whose ACS TONNEAU we've reviewed, includes both XRs in its list of covers the rack mounts to. Owners have bent the aluminum tracks by cranking rack bolts down too hard; tighten them with a torque wrench to whatever figure the rack maker and RealTruck specify for these rails.
The two styles lock in different places. A folder's latches release only with the tailgate down, so a folder is as secure as its gate; add a tailgate lock if the truck didn't come with one. The LEER's CYNC latch resists a coat hanger, which is why it's our security folder, and owners say the MX4's pull cables are where its security falls short. A Retrax carries its own keyed latch, and because RealTruck says the PRO XR's cover and tailgate open independently, one lock doesn't cover the other: a locked tailgate doesn't keep the cover shut, and a locked cover doesn't keep the gate shut. Turn the key on the cover and lock the gate whenever you walk away.
Water, drain tubes and winter
Style doesn't settle the water question. Our leak-risk gauge puts the Ultra Flex, the LEER and the RetraxPRO XR all at moderate, and the BAKFlip MX4 at high. It's unset on the ONE XR, where too few owners report on water to set it, though all of those who do describe some getting in. The entry points do follow the design. On the PRO XR, water gathers in the side-rail channels and runs under the cover, then reaches the tailgate seam; on the ONE XR it's the canister end and the tailgate seam. The MX4 takes it first at its two front corners, below the rear window, and then at the tailgate end. The Ultra Flex shows no leak spot that comes up twice, and LEER says the HF650M handles water without drain tubes.
On a retractable, drain tubes are the plumbing, and they're the usual reason a drill comes out. Each Retrax runs built-in tubes from the canister down to the bed's drain holes. On some trucks the tubes sit at the weep holes with nothing drilled; on others they pass through holes drilled in the front bed plugs, and a ONE XR on a Maverick calls for a hole of about half an inch or an enlarged drain hole near the cab. Trim the hoses so the water can't back up, and check them after the first few storms. Folders differ. The MX4 carries water along channels in its rails to tubes, and on a 4th gen Tacoma that tube is twice as wide as the bed's drain hole, which means drilling or a barbed reducer. The LEER has no tubes, and RealTruck's Ultra Flex page doesn't describe a drain setup. Wherever a hole is needed, follow the install guide for your exact part, and treat any bare metal against rust.
Each style has its own winter failure. Retractable slats can ice onto their tracks, and any water sitting in the canister freezes; Retrax's care advice is not to force it, to tap gently around the edges by hand, and to use de-icer in the key lock only. On a folder, the panel at the tailgate end can freeze to the gate, and foam-core panels such as the MX4's can absorb water over freeze-thaw cycles and get heavy to fold. Brush snow off either before opening, or it falls into the canister or off the panels into the bed. Where snow piles up and stays for days, 200 lb is a thin rating, and that's the ONE XR's. Our winter guide covers cold-weather care in full, and our leaking cover guide goes through the seal and drain fixes.
Weight, removal, warranty and price
No maker here publishes a weight. The only figures are owner guesses: about 90 lb for one PRO XR, and 20 to 30 lb less for the ONE XR by another owner's estimate. Treat both as rough. In daily use the difference is in the motion: you lift a folder's panels each time you open the bed, and a retractable slides along its track.
Removal favors the folder, mostly because you rarely need it. With the panels folded the floor is back, so taking a folder off only buys the strip under the stack. A Retrax canister stays put for as long as the cover is installed, and getting the full bed back means pulling the rails and canister along with it; owners disagree on how fast that goes. Both styles clamp on, so neither is permanent.
Warranty depends on the model rather than the style. The PRO XR has a limited lifetime warranty, the ONE XR one year, the Ultra Flex 5 years and the LEER 3 years according to LEER's page. Each covers only the original buyer. LEER has also taken the HF650M off its own website, so long-term parts support is uncertain.
We compare prices pair by pair on Amazon, same truck and same bed, and don't print them because they move. The folders come out ahead, usually by a lot: the Ultra Flex was cheaper than the PRO XR on 11 of 11 matching listings, and the LEER cheaper than both Retrax covers on 8 of 8. The ONE XR sits between the styles, under the PRO XR on every matching listing and over the Ultra Flex on all 9 pairs we could line up.
The hard roll-up: the third way
Want a retractable's clear rear window without the canister? Buy a hard roll-up. The TruXedo Sentry CT rolls its aluminum slats up against the cab and straps them there, keeps the glass clear, and comes out without tools on most listings, though RealTruck says one Tundra version lacks the quick-release. Of every cover we've reviewed, it alone gets a low leak-risk reading. Its 400 lb rating assumes an evenly distributed load, and RealTruck gives 5 years of coverage on the rails, clamps, bows and fabric. On every matching listing it cost more than the Ultra Flex and less than either Retrax.
It gives up the retractable's two strengths. The cover carries no rails, RealTruck publishes no rack statement for it, and its warranty excludes driving with the cover partly open. The gate has to be up before the cover closes, since the CT seals against the top of it, and TruXedo support warns against driving with the gate lowered under a shut cover. For a roll-up with rails, BAK sells the Revolver X4ts; we haven't reviewed it, so check fit for your truck. One Tacoma owner had a Yakima rack over a PRO XR on a 3rd gen short bed, then, on a Trailhunter, switched to a BAK Revolver roll-up with T-slots rather than lose bed space to a retractable. Our Sentry CT against the X4s comparison covers the two hard roll-ups we've reviewed.
Which style goes on your truck
Put a folder on it if you use the whole bed, drive a Maverick or a midsize short bed, or want to spend less. The Ultra Flex is the folder we'd buy for most trucks, and our MX4 against the Ultra Flex comparison explains why we'd take it over BAK's flagship. The LEER is the lower-cost security pick, provided a 3-year warranty and LEER's own site no longer listing it don't put you off, and your Ram doesn't have a RamBox or split tailgate, neither of which it fits.
Put a retractable on it if a rack rides on the cover, your loads want the cover stopped part-way, or the rear window matters enough to give up a strip of bed for as long as the cover's on. Owners who trade a folder for a retractable each name a specific reason: a rack, lumber under a part-closed cover, a clear view of bikes, or a trailer that takes the big loads so the bed doesn't have to. Without a reason like that, the canister is a cost you carry every day. The PRO XR is the one for aluminum slats, 500 lb and a lifetime warranty. The ONE XR brings T-slot rails, a canister and the lock-anywhere key for less, on a polycarbonate cover rated 200 lb with one year of warranty and water reported at the canister end and the tailgate. If neither a rack nor part-open loads apply, the Sentry CT gives you the window and the full bed with no canister, and our hard vs soft guide covers the other cover styles. Whichever you choose, the right listing is the one in the rows under the pick that names your truck, bed length and tailgate.

What owners say
Owners who have run both styles, or traded one for the other, split along the lines this guide draws. Most who've owned both a folder and a retractable prefer the retractable, each for a specific job. Two F-150 owners moved from a BAKFlip to a Retrax XR: one to lock the cover part-way shut over lumber, while warning that a cover left cracked open can be pried further, and the other to keep the rear window clear while hauling mountain bikes. A Tundra owner who liked a BAKFlip on an earlier truck chose a retractable for the newer one because a flatbed trailer handles the big loads. The holdout, whose BAKFlip tri-fold stayed very dry, says their Retrax leaked enough that they wouldn't buy another retractable, and a relative's Gator retractable leaks worse. Another Tundra owner values being able to put a rack on a Retrax, which a tri-fold couldn't take. On the other side, an owner shopping for a new Tundra ran a Retrax with T-slot rails and Yakima towers on the last truck and found it took too much bed space and leaked a bit too much. We'd let the rack question decide first, then how much of the bed's front strip you can live without, and order the exact listing for the truck.
“I’m not sure about all retractables but my dad has a gator retractable and it leaks worse than my Retrax. My only other experience with a tonneau cover is with a bak flip tri fold and that stayed very dry.”
“Last truck I had the Retrax with the t slot rail and Yakima skyline towers. The retrax was okay but took up too much bed space for me (and leaked a bit too much).”
“Yes, you can open it as little as you want and lock it in place. If you leave it cracked open, someone could easily pry it open further with a pry bar, but that would not be a simple task. I had a back flip and now have the Retrax XR. I think the Retrax is great and like being able to close it most of the way with lumber or other things in the back.”
“I've had a bakflip cover in the past, and it worked well. My only complaint was if you're going to be running it fully open often its a bit annoying to fully lose your rear visibility. I ended up snagging a used retractable cover (Retrax XR) off facebook marketplace and i like it so far. Went this route as i use my bed to haul mountain bikes quite often so wanted to maintain my rear visibility. Only complaint with it is related to fitment with my tailgate pad, but was easy enough to adjust it to fit.”
“I have had both as well. I liked the Bakflip 4 or my 2018 Tundra. Since then I have gotten a few things in the stable. I have a flatbed trailer I use for towing the toys, so I have plenty of hauling capability. So, when I decided to put the tanneau cover on, I went with the retractable. I love it.”
“Meant to add, I like the flexibility of being able to put a rack on top of the retrax as well. I could not do that with a trifold.”
