Most Secure Tonneau Cover: A Retrax With a Key, or LEER's Latch

Independent editorial guide. We never accept payment for coverage, though we may earn a commission if you purchase through our links.
Quick Take
Buy the RetraxPRO XR. It's the cover with a lock of its own: a keyed latch on double-wall aluminum slats that locks at any point along the track, so you can close it down on a load that sticks out past the tailgate and still turn the key. RealTruck backs it with a limited lifetime warranty. It costs the most of our picks on every matching listing we compared, and its canister keeps roughly a foot of the bed.
The key doesn't tie the cover to the tailgate, so lock both every time, and buy a tailgate lock first if the truck shipped without one. Every cover here is a deterrent, not a vault. If you'd rather shut the bed with one locked tailgate, the LEER HF650M's CYNC latch can't be fished open with a coat hanger and lets go only once the tailgate is down, but LEER no longer lists it on its own site, so it's a buy while stocks last. The Peragon Landmark has steel deadbolts on most editions. If tools live in the truck all week, lockable DECKED drawers or a hard shell will do more than any cover.
Four covers for a locked bed, each listed only for the trucks and beds we confirmed. See picks ↓
A tonneau cover keeps tools out of sight, and a good one keeps them out of reach. How well it does that depends on how the cover releases, what has to be unlocked first, and how the top stands up to a blade or a bar. Most covers we've reviewed have no key at all. Their latches let go once the tailgate is open, so the tailgate lock does all the work.
The RetraxPRO XR is the cover we'd lock tools under, for the key on the cover itself. The LEER HF650M is the folder with a latch we trust, while stocks last, the Peragon Landmark adds steel deadbolts and sells direct, and the TruXedo Sentry CT is the hard roll-up for owners who want the rear window clear. A determined thief with a crowbar still gets into any of them, so treat each one as a deterrent, never as a vault.
Each cover is sold as a separate part for every truck and bed, so match the listing to your truck before you order.
The most secure cover for each job
Pick by how you want to lock up and how much you'll pay for it.
- Best overall, a key on the cover: the RetraxPRO XR. Double-wall aluminum slats, a keyed latch that locks anywhere along the track and a limited lifetime warranty. It costs the most of our picks on every matching listing, its canister keeps roughly a foot of the bed, and it slides open with the tailgate locked, so the key is what keeps the bed shut.
- A folder, while stocks last: the LEER HF650M. A hard quad-fold rated 450 lb evenly distributed, with a CYNC latch that opens with two fingers from either side of the bed, but only with the tailgate down. A coat hanger won't fish it open, and that's the main reason to pick it over the BAKFlip MX4. LEER no longer lists it on its own site, and it won't fit a Ram with a RamBox or the split tailgate.
- Deadbolts and no canister: the Peragon Landmark. 14-gauge aluminum panels with a keyed steel deadbolt on the Classic and two on the Platinum and LimitedHD. The panels fold down at the front of the bed and lift out when you need all of it. Peragon sells it direct, so we earn nothing on it, and it lets some water in at the edges.
- The rear window clear: the TruXedo Sentry CT. Aluminum slats under a canvas top that roll to the cab with nothing left in the bed. It has no key of its own; you unlock the cover by opening the tailgate, so the bed is as shut as the tailgate is.
- Tools that never leave the truck: lockable drawers or a hard shell, covered near the end.
The four picks side by side
Here's how the makers describe each one, plus what else has to be locked before the bed is shut:
Spec | Peragon Landmark | TruXedo Sentry CT | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
Lock | Keyed latch that locks at any position along the track | CYNC latch, released from either side with the tailgate down; no keyed lock stated | Keyed deadbolt (Classic), keyed dual deadbolt (Platinum, LimitedHD), keyless DualAction lock (LimitedHDx) | Level-2 locks, a tension cable and up to six automatic latches |
What else you lock | The tailgate too; the cover opens with the tailgate shut and locked | The tailgate; the cover releases only with it down | The tailgate too; it opens on its own and the cover doesn't lock to it. By one owner's account, the LimitedHDx's keyless lock stays shut while the tailgate is locked | The tailgate; you unlock the cover by opening it |
Rated load | 500 lb, evenly distributed | 450 lb, evenly distributed | 300 lb evenly distributed (like snow), 50 lb concentrated; nothing on it while driving | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
Warranty | Limited lifetime, original buyer, not transferable | 3 years, original retail buyer, not transferable, per LEER's page; some older Amazon listings say limited lifetime | 1, 3 or 5 years by edition | 5 years on rails, clamps, bows and fabric, original buyer, not transferable |
Opened | Slides into a canister at the front of the bed, which takes space for good | Four panels; LEER's listing says the stack locks away from the cab with the third brake light and window visible | Panels fold accordion-style down into the front of the bed; they quick-release for the full bed | Rolls to the cab and straps; RealTruck says 100 percent bed access |
All four are hard covers, and every load figure assumes weight spread across the closed cover, not a toolbox or a knee on one spot. Their makers say the LEER, the PRO XR and the CT need no drilling to mount on most trucks, though some PRO XR owners drill for its drain tubes. The Landmark's mount depends on the edition and the truck, and Peragon says its 2023 and 2024 Canyon fits need drilling.
On price, the LEER wins outright. It cost less than both the Sentry CT and the PRO XR on all eight matching listings we compared, and the PRO XR cost the most every time. Peragon prices by edition: on the Gen14 F-150 short bed, every Landmark edition costs more than the LEER and less than the PRO XR, and the CT's price falls inside the Landmark's range.
Your tailgate is the lock on most covers
On a hard folder, and on a hard roll-up without a key, the latches catch as the cover closes and let go only once the tailgate is open. That leaves the tailgate lock as the one lock between a thief and the bed. A truck that shipped without a tailgate lock should get one before any cover here guards your tools, and it only works if you turn it every time you walk away. Leave the tailgate unlocked and the cover is unlocked too.
The keyed covers turn that around. RealTruck says the PRO XR's cover and tailgate open and close independently, in any order. Take the maker at its word and each lock guards only its own way in: the tailgate lock won't stop the cover sliding open, and the key on the cover won't stop anyone lowering an unlocked tailgate. Lock both. The Landmark's tailgate also opens on its own, and the cover doesn't lock to it, so its deadbolts leave the gate to the tailgate lock. The LimitedHDx is the exception, by one owner's account: its keyless lock stays shut while the tailgate is locked.
Count the locks before you buy. On the LEER or the Sentry CT, one locked tailgate shuts the bed, and the cover's latch is only as good as that lock. On a Retrax, or a Peragon with deadbolts, it takes two, and forgetting either one leaves the bed open. We'd still take the second lock: it's a key on the cover itself rather than a latch waiting on the tailgate, and on the PRO XR it holds at any point along the track. Make turning both a habit. Roll-N-Lock's M-Series counts as two as well: lock the cover with its key and the tailgate on its own, as our Roll-N-Lock M-Series review explains. RealTruck says the A-Series, which we haven't reviewed, adds a tailgate extrusion that keeps the tailgate from opening with the cover closed.
Latches, cables and the coat hanger
On a keyless cover, the release is meant to be reachable only with the tailgate down. What separates one cover from the next is how well its latch holds while the tailgate stays locked.
- LEER HF650M: the CYNC latch has no pull cord, and a coat hanger can't fish it open. It's still a latch, not a deadbolt, so a determined thief with a crowbar could still get in.
- BAKFlip MX4: pull handles on cables release the panels, owners say its latch can be opened with a coat hanger, and one MX4 has been broken into three times. RealTruck bills the MX4 EZ-Lift, whose middle panels unlatch on their own with no cable pulls, as the most secure MX4 yet. It only went on sale in June 2026 and no owner has reported on it, so treat that as RealTruck's claim, unproven.
- UnderCover Ultra Flex and Armor Flex: slam latches lock the panels, and release cables at the bed sides open them only once the tailgate is lowered. Neither has a keyed lock.
- BAK Revolver X4s: rotational locking rails hold the sides down, automatic slam latches lock it, and the release cables sit at the tailgate end. There's no keyed lock, so lock your tailgate, and it's open or closed, with no part-way lock.
- Gator EFX and Rough Country Low Profile: auto-latches tied to your tailgate lock and no key of their own.
If what rides in your bed is worth stealing and you want a folder, buy the LEER over the MX4. The latch is the difference, and the LEER cost less on every matching listing we compared. Our MX4 vs LEER comparison covers the rest of that matchup, from water to the folded stack.
Keys and deadbolts: the Retrax covers and the Peragon
Of the covers we've reviewed, only the two Retrax XRs and the Peragon Landmark have a lock you work apart from the tailgate: a key on the Retraxes, steel deadbolts on every Landmark edition but the keyless LimitedHDx. All three are retractables, and all three still need the tailgate locked.
- RetraxPRO XR: a keyed latch that locks at any point along the track, so you can close the cover down on a load that sticks out past the tailgate or leave a gap for a cord. The slats are double-wall aluminum, and RealTruck backs it with a limited lifetime warranty. Turn the key whenever you walk away, because the cover slides open with the tailgate locked.
- RetraxONE XR: key-lockable in any position, on a one-piece polycarbonate cover rated 200 lb evenly distributed with a 1-year warranty. We'd still like a locking latch on both sides, and for a bed full of tools we'd spend the extra on the PRO XR's aluminum slats.
- Peragon Landmark: a keyed steel deadbolt on the Classic, two on the Platinum and LimitedHD, and a keyless DualAction lock on the LimitedHDx. Solid aluminum panels interlock when closed. We'd buy the Platinum or LimitedHD for the dual deadbolt.
Keys bring their own chores. One Peragon cover arrived with a broken lock, and its buyer heard nothing back from Peragon about it, so inspect the lock the day the cover lands. In hard cold a Retrax can stick frozen; Retrax's care instructions say not to force it and to keep de-icer to the key lock. Our retractable winter guide has the rest of that routine.
What a blade or a bar does to the top
A latch only matters if the top holds. Soft covers fail first. RealTruck describes a latch and no lock on the TruXedo Lo Pro, Tyger describes no lock for the T3, and a knife gets through vinyl. One owner's cheap Amazon roll-up had a gash where someone cut it open before a RetraxONE XR replaced it. A soft cover hides cargo and does little else, so keep tools out of one when the truck sits overnight. Our hard vs soft guide weighs the rest of that trade.
Hard tops hold up better. The Sentry CT's canvas sits over aluminum slats that shrug off a utility knife, and getting through the slats would take a hammer and a pry bar, tools that would smash a window just as easily. The tailgate lock is the likelier way in. We'd leave luggage and cheaper tools under a CT, but not a laptop. The X4s uses aluminum slats RealTruck calls slash-resistant, and RealTruck calls it the most secure hard roll-up in its class on its own Level-3 scale, which is the maker's grading and not one we can check.
The folders hold with latches, not deadbolts, and we wouldn't count on any cover here, deadbolts included, to keep out a determined thief with a crowbar.
Every cover we've reviewed, and how it locks, in its maker's wording:

Ranger (2024 on) | Not confirmed on Amazon | 4 ft 10 in | No fit; Peragon stops at 2023 | Not confirmed on Amazon |
The Ram is where the picks split. The LEER won't work with a RamBox or the 60/40 multifunction tailgate, per LEER, and its Ram listings don't say DT or Classic, so confirm the truck with the seller. For a DT with the split tailgate and no RamBox, the Sentry CT is the one pick with a confirmed listing; the PRO XR's split-tailgate fit is its RamBox listing, and Peragon only says a Right On Bracket handles the multifunction tailgate from 2025 on. On the GM trucks, Amazon calls the short bed 5 ft 10 in while RealTruck calls the same part 5 ft 8 in, so match by the inch figure. Peragon says nothing about the MultiPro or Multi-Flex tailgate, so ask before you order.
Some fits have no confirmed Amazon listing. For those, search the PRO XR for a 4th gen Tacoma, the Sentry CT for a 4th gen Tacoma or the LEER for a Maverick, match the maker's part number and check fit for your truck.
When a cover is not enough: drawers and shells
If tools live in the truck all week, look past covers. The DECKED Drawer System gives up about the bottom foot of the bed to drawers that roll out toward the tailgate, under a flat deck DECKED rates at 2,000 lb evenly distributed on full-size trucks. The drawers lock only through a locking tailgate unless you add DECKED's keyed locks, which the listing says are not included, so we'd add them on day one. On an open bed, anything strapped to the deck sits higher and is easier for a thief to spot, so we'd run the drawers under a cover or a shell.
Locking doors on a hard shell beat any cover's latch. The LEER 100XR we reviewed locks its rear door with a single flip-lock handle and rotary latches, and our best truck cap guide covers the other shells worth a look. Skip a soft topper for this job: the Softopper has no lock. Our tonneau cover vs camper shell guide walks through when a shell beats a cover and what it costs you in bed access.
What we'd lock tools under
Put the RetraxPRO XR on any truck it fits where you can spare roughly a foot of bed to the canister. It's our Amazon pick with a key on the cover, the latch holds anywhere along the track, the rails take a rack, and a limited lifetime warranty stands behind it. Turn the key and lock the tailgate every time you walk away, and add a tailgate lock if the truck lacks one.
Buy the LEER HF650M, while stocks last, if you want a folder and one locked tailgate to shut the bed. It's the folder with the latch we trust and the lowest price of our picks, though LEER no longer lists it on its own site. Choose the Peragon Landmark's Platinum or LimitedHD for deadbolts with no canister, and the Sentry CT if a clear rear window matters more to you than a key. If what's in the bed would hurt to lose, lockable drawers or a shell do more than any cover.

What owners say
Owners who keep tools or gear in the bed put the lock near the top of the list. An owner who put a BAKFlip MX4 on a 2024 truck is pleased with its security over soft covers, and an owner who was set on a hard cover for security, with no drain plugs, narrowed the choice to the BAK Revolver X4s and the LEER before buying the X4s. A RetraxONE XR owner moved up from a cheap Amazon roll-up that someone had cut open. A Peragon arrived with a broken lock, and its buyer, with no reply from Peragon, planned to send it back. Another owner skipped a cover for a DECKED drawer system and its secure storage. We'd lock tools under a RetraxPRO XR's key with the tailgate locked too, take a LEER while stocks last for a folder, and add deadbolts or lockable drawers when the bed carries more than you'd want to lose.
“I also went with the MX4 on my '24 and have no regets. i'm very pleased with ease of use and enhanced security over soft covers.”
“I was dead set on hard cover for security, no drain plugs, mostly weather proof and reasonably easy to take off. ... I’m happy with my choice after narrowing it down to the x4s and leer.”
“I just put a retrax one XR on last week after 3 years with some ... Amazon roll up cover. Was easy to install and way better than the roll up since it actually stays latched and doesn’t have a big gash where someone cut it open a few years ago.”
“Granted, it’s not a Tonneau cover, but I went with the Decked drawer system. It does help with wind resistance and has a lot of secure storage space. I like the sport/chase rack & the Decked system seemed like the best option.”
