Best Truck Cap: LEER 100XR for Most, Softopper for Bed Access

Quick Take
Buy a LEER 100XR if you want a hard cap that looks like it came with the truck: a fiberglass shell molded for your truck, painted to match, with sliding side windows and a locking rear door, built to order through LEER dealers. Buy a Softopper if you want the whole bed back on short notice: a canvas topper on a folding aluminum frame that folds to the cab in a minute or two or lifts off, light enough for one person. If a rooftop tent or real roof load is the plan, the SmartCap EVO Sport is the cap whose maker publishes both a moving and a parked rating.
Don't buy any of them expecting a dry bed out of the box. LEER 100XR owners report water about as often as Softopper owners do, so the install and the sealing decide how dry yours stays: seal the bed seams first, add a tailgate seal and water-test the cap before you pay. Check fit, too. LEER confirms your cab and bed at the dealer, and Softopper sells only some trucks' tops on Amazon.
Two caps we've reviewed, two we haven't, and the tailgate seal we'd add to any of them, with the fit rows we confirmed for your truck. See picks ↓
Truck cap, camper shell, topper and canopy all name the same thing: a roof over the bed that clamps to the bed rails, with windows and a rear door. What separates them is what they're made of. Fiberglass caps are molded for one truck and painted to match it. SmartCap's stainless steel EVO Sport is built around side access and published roof loads. Soft toppers stretch canvas over a folding frame and give up the lock to give you the bed back whenever you want it.
We've reviewed two of them, the LEER 100XR and the Softopper, and we'd buy either one for the right truck. LEER sells through dealers, not Amazon, and we earn nothing on it; it's still the hard cap we'd start with. The A.R.E. CX Classic and the SmartCap EVO Sport appear here as caps we haven't reviewed, described from the pages that sell them.
Fiberglass, metal or soft: pick the type first
Start with what rides in the bed and how often you need all of it.
- Paint-matched fiberglass (LEER 100XR, A.R.E. CX Classic): for tools and gear that live in the truck behind a locking door, under a cap that looks like part of the truck. LEER builds the 100XR to order, a hard cap is a heavy lift so it mostly stays on, and the roof carries only what the maker allows.
- Metal (SmartCap EVO Sport): for roof loads and side access. Stainless steel, gullwing side doors and a published 770 lb parked and 330 lb moving rating, and SmartCap says it goes on or off in 15 minutes. It costs noticeably more than the 100XR on the trucks owners priced.
- Soft topper (Softopper): for dogs, camping gear and weekend loads when Monday needs the full bed. It weighs 18 to 48 lb depending on the truck, folds to the cab, has no lock, and nothing goes on its roof.
Fiberglass or aluminum? None of our picks is aluminum. We'd pick fiberglass for the paint match, the molded fit and a dealer down the road who handles warranty work, and a metal cap when you need what its maker publishes for the roof and the sides. Aluminum canopies like Alu-Cab's come up often, but we haven't reviewed one, so get the maker's own roof figures before you load one. Here's how the four caps compare, from each maker's page (RealTruck's for the A.R.E.) and our two reviews:
Spec | LEER 100XR | A.R.E. CX Classic | SmartCap EVO Sport | Softopper |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Shell | Custom-fit fiberglass | Polyester resin laminate fiberglass | Automotive-grade stainless steel | 2-ply PVC-coated sailcloth (or 3-layer Premium Black Twill on select trucks) over an anodized aluminum frame |
Side windows | Sliding with screens; windoors, windoor sliders or solid sides available | Aluminum-framed sliding window with screen | Bonded glass gullwing doors with three-position vent windows | Roll-up sides; clear, tinted, mesh or solid panels |
Rear door | Frameless compound-curved glass, flip-lock handle, rotary latches | Aluminum-framed door with a single T-handle | Not described on the page | Rear panel hooks over the top of the tailgate; no lock |
Roof load | Factory Thule racks only: 150 to 220 lb depending on the LEER page and rack; no roof rating | Reinforced roof; no figure published | 770 lb parked, 330 lb moving | None; Softopper says a load above cab height catches the wind and folds the top |
Weight | Not published | Not on the CX Classic page | Not on the EVO Sport page | 18 to 48 lb by fitment |
Install | Authorized LEER dealer; J-bolt clamps over a bulb seal | Clamps on with L-rails; RealTruck says no cutting or drilling on most applications | On or off in 15 minutes, per SmartCap | About 45 to 60 minutes (FAQ); up to 90 minutes (Amazon listings) |
Warranty | Limited lifetime on structure and against abnormal paint fade or peel; locks, latches and brake light 1 year; gas props 5 years | Limited lifetime on body and paint; lock, keyless entry and brake light 3 years; seals and framed windows 1 year | 3 years, parts and workmanship | 1 year on the top, 6 months on zippers, 3 months on the vinyl windows |
Water: the install decides it, not the material
No cap here comes sealed, and the material won't save you. Of LEER 100XR owners who describe water, 13 of 21 report at least some; of Softopper owners, 15 of 26 do. That's close enough that we don't rank caps on dryness. The fiberglass and the canvas panels aren't where the water comes in. The joints and seams are, and every cap has them:
- On a fiberglass cap: the rear door glass has to press evenly into its seal, every hole cut for a brake light, rack track or rod holder is another seal, and side windows can be set badly. Dealers and LEER have fixed these with adjusted latches, new windows and replacement shells, but it takes time.
- On a soft topper: drips where the Softopper rails sit on the bed rails, along the seams, at the rear flap and at the cab-end corners. Seam sealer, thicker weather stripping under the rails and plugging the bed's front corners fix most of it.
- On the truck itself: bed seams and the front corners let water in under any cap, Tacoma beds especially. The tailgate gap is open to rain and road spray under every one of them.
So do the prep before the cap goes on and the test before you pay. Seal the bed seams and front corners while the bed is bare, add a tailgate seal, then run a hose over the roof, windows and rear door and look for wet spots. Keep pressure washers off it: LEER doesn't warrant its windows against leaks from high-pressure car washes, and Softopper says touchless washes only. The ESI Ultimate Tailgate Seal in our picks is the seal we'd start with; ESI sells a separate kit for most trucks, so buy the one listed for yours.
Roof racks and rooftop tents
Only one cap here publishes separate moving and parked loads: SmartCap rates the EVO Sport at 330 lb moving and 770 lb parked, and still warns that the load may be more than the truck bed can carry. For the others, here's every roof figure their makers publish:
Cap | Published roof figure | Moving or parked? |
|---|---|---|
LEER 100XR | Factory Thule racks only: Tracker II 165 lb and AeroBlade 220 lb (FAQ), 165 lb (warranty page), 150 lb (11/24 warranty card); no rating for the roof itself | Not stated |
A.R.E. CX Classic | Reinforced roof; no figure published | No figure |
SmartCap EVO Sport | 330 lb moving, 770 lb parked | Both stated |
Softopper | None; no load on the frame | No figure |
On a LEER, plan on 150 lb, the lowest figure LEER prints, until your dealer gives you a higher one in writing for the rack on your cap. LEER's FAQ doesn't say whether its figures are for driving or parked, and LEER publishes no separate rating for the roof while you're parked, so there's no LEER number for a rooftop tent with people in it. Owners quote roof figures for their caps that their makers never published; a parked rating is not a driving rating, and a number from a forum is neither.
Nothing goes on a Softopper's frame. Softopper's FAQ says a load above cab height catches the wind and folds the top, and points you to a rack. Its own Exo Truck Bed Rack mounts under the Softopper rails to the factory rails and is rated 1,000 lb static, which means parked; that is not a rating for a load on the move. If a tent is the plan, we'd put it on a bed rack that bolts to the truck, or on a cap whose maker publishes a parked load, and follow the rack maker's ratings and instructions.
Security, weight and taking it off
A hard cap with a locking door is the secure choice. The 100XR opens with one flip-lock handle and rotary latches, and keyless entry is on its options list; A.R.E. covers the CX Classic's lock and keyless entry for three years to LEER's one. Soft toppers keep out weather and eyes, not thieves: anyone can unbutton one, and a knife gets through canvas. If tools stay in the bed overnight, buy the hard cap.
Weight is the number nobody prints for a hard cap. LEER doesn't publish one, and neither the CX Classic page nor the EVO Sport page lists one; Softopper puts its tops at 18 to 48 lb depending on the truck. Before a hard cap, a drawer system and a loaded roof go on, get the cap's weight from the dealer or a scale ticket and add everything up against the payload on your door-jamb placard. On a midsize truck that's already near its limit, that math alone can make the case for a soft topper.
Taking one off is where they differ most. A Softopper folds toward the cab in a minute or two, and with the frame and canopy left together it goes back on in about two minutes, per Softopper. SmartCap says the EVO Sport goes on or off in 15 minutes. A fiberglass cap is a heavy lift with brake-light wiring to undo and needs a place to live once it's off, so plan on leaving it on.
If you camp under a cap, follow its maker's rules. LEER's is short: no one rides in it while the truck is moving or the engine is running. Under a Softopper, sleep back there only with the truck parked and follow Softopper's instructions.
Buying one: lead times, dealers and warranties
How you buy a cap matters as much as which one you buy. How each is sold, and what its warranty asks of you:
Cap | How it is sold | Who installs it | Warranty conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
LEER 100XR | Built to order; authorized LEER dealers | The dealer; LEER warrants only installs by its authorized dealers | Structure and paint for as long as the original buyer owns it, installed by an authorized dealer on the original truck; claims need the invoice with the cap serial number and the truck VIN |
A.R.E. CX Classic | Direct from RealTruck online, or through A.R.E. dealers | Not stated; clamps on with L-rails and the included hardware | Body for as long as the original purchaser owns the cap and the original truck; paint against abnormal fade or peel; claims through an authorized A.R.E. dealer |
SmartCap EVO Sport | Online, shipped to your home or a SmartCap dealer | Not stated; on or off in 15 minutes, per SmartCap | 3 years, parts and workmanship |
Softopper | Amazon for some trucks; softopper.com for the rest | You, with a wrench or socket | Original purchaser only; excludes used, open-box and closeout units from third parties |
Order a fiberglass cap early. LEER builds nearly every cap to order at one of three plants, owner waits run from about five weeks to 19 weeks, and quotes often run short; a missing option like windoors can hold an order for months. Get quotes from more than one dealer, too, because how dry and how square the cap ends up depends on the shop that sets it. Owners usually price the 100XR under SnugTop and SmartCap and close to an A.R.E. on the same truck. If price decides it, put an A.R.E. CX Classic quote next to the LEER one; either can come out ahead depending on the dealer. Find a LEER shop with LEER's dealer locator.
Read LEER's conditions before you buy a used cap or plan to move one. LEER's warranty covers the structure and paint only for the original buyer, with a dealer install on the original truck, so a used LEER or one moved to your next truck falls outside it. Softopper's warranty likewise excludes used and open-box units bought from third parties. A used cap can still be a good buy; just price it as one with no coverage.
Which trucks our two reviewed caps fit
Both makers build per truck. The LEER column comes from LEER's own fit tool, which lists the 100XR for every year shown; it asks for cab and bed but doesn't change its answer with them, so the dealer confirms those. The Softopper column shows only the tops we confirmed on Amazon's own listings. We checked both on October 24, 2026:
Truck | LEER 100XR (LEER fit tool) | Softopper on Amazon |
|---|---|---|
F-150 (Gen14) | 2021-2026 | 5.5 ft, 2021-2023 (one 2015-2023 listing); 2024-on tops on softopper.com |
F-150 (Gen13) | 2015-2020 | 5.5 ft (the same 2015-2023 listing) |
Silverado 1500 / Sierra 1500 (T1XX) | 2019-2026 | Not on Amazon at our check; softopper.com |
Ram 1500 (DT) | 2019-2026 | 5.5 ft and 6.5 ft (2009-2027 listings); not with RamBox |
Tacoma (4th gen) | 2024-2026 | 5 ft (2024-2027); 6 ft on softopper.com |
Tacoma (3rd gen) | 2016-2023 | 5 ft and 6 ft (2016-2023); the 5 ft listing excludes 2021-2023 trucks with the bed storage lockbox |
Tundra (3rd gen) | 2022-2026 | Not on Amazon at our check; softopper.com |
Ranger (6th gen) | 2024-2026 | Not on Amazon at our check; softopper.com |
Maverick | 2022-2026 | 4.5 ft (2022-2027) |
Colorado / Canyon (3rd gen) | 2023-2026 | Not on Amazon at our check; softopper.com |
LEER's 100XR page says nothing about RamBox or the GM MultiPro and Multi-Flex or Ram multifunction tailgates, so ask the dealer before you order. Softopper's compatibility guide rules out a headache rack, a tonneau cover, RamBox, the GM CarbonPro bed and Trail Edition trucks. The SmartCap and ESI rows under each pick show the beds their makers list; the A.R.E. has no confirmed rows, so check fit with a dealer.
Cap or tonneau cover
If what you carry fits below the bed rails, a tonneau cover keeps the bed lower and the view out the back unchanged, and some lift off by hand. A cap gives you cargo room up to its roof, windows and, on a hard cap, a locking door, at the cost of tall loads that won't fit through the rear opening. Our tonneau cover vs camper shell guide walks through that choice and the covers we'd buy instead.
Which cap we would buy
- LEER 100XR: the hard cap we'd start with, for the paint-matched look, sliding windows, windoor options and a dealer who stands behind the warranty. Add windoors on at least one side and hold the dealer to a water test before you pay the balance.
- Softopper: the one we'd take for bed access and light weight, on a Tacoma, an F-150 through 2023, a Ram 1500 or a Maverick, where it's on Amazon. Seal the seams the day it goes on, and skip it for valuables or deep cold.
- SmartCap EVO Sport: if the roof has to carry real weight or you want gullwing side access. We haven't reviewed it, but it's the only cap here with a published moving and parked rating.
- A.R.E. CX Classic: the like-for-like alternative to the LEER if your A.R.E. dealer is the better shop or gives the better quote. We haven't reviewed it.

What owners say
Owners who have run more than one cap choose on fit, dealer and price more than brand. A Tacoma owner picked a LEER 100XR over an A.R.E. and a SnugTop for the money and finds it leaks a bit in long rain. A.R.E. CX owners split: one finds the CX Classic's paint match good and its bottom edge straight, while an owner of several LEERs regrets an ARE CX with an uneven bottom and an off color. An owner with a LEER on one truck and an A.R.E. on the other passed on the SmartCap over price, looks and heat. SmartCap draws both ends: a buyer who canceled a LEER after a long wait for windoors had a SmartCap within days and likes it better, while another reports missing hardware, rust at the seams within a year and poor support. An A.R.E. owner would look at a soft top next time to skip the weight and the hassle of removal, and a Softopper owner weighs light weight, quick removal and fair rain protection against no lock. We'd buy from a dealer we trust and water-test the cap before paying.
“21 DCLB, I got a LEER 100XR about 2 years ago ... When I was doing my research, it looked like LEER was better then ARE, not as good as SnugTop, but the more reasonably priced for what you got, so I went with the LEER. So far, so good. I use it for car camping and have a platform in the back. Only real complaint would be if it’s in rain for an extended period of time, it does leak a bit. That may have to do with the windoors though.”
“Stay away from smartcap. I know they’re the best looking cap but customer service is basically nonexistent. When they do reply they don’t know anything about the product. Mine came with a ton of missing hardware and extra install material not listed in instructions. Took 3 months to identify what they actually sent me. Have had it for less then year and rust is already set in between every seam. Brother purchased one with the same experience that I had in addition to water leaks everywhere and major fitment issues.”
“I bought an ARE hardtop, color matched. I love it, but if I were doing it again I'd definitely consider a soft top that can be easily removed when I want to remove it. The hardtop is a pain in the ass to remove, so typically you end up not doing it. Also, the hardtop adds about 150-200 pounds of weight to the backend, and it will "enhance" the Tacoma sag. To combat that I installed some firestone airbags, which have been great - but you avoid that with a soft top. And when needed, the soft top can be just as good as the hard top when it comes to keeping out rain.”
“Softopper. Pros: light weight. They only weigh something like 30lbs. I can lift it with one arm. So it doesn’t really impact the GVWR. Versatility. Easily collapsed and removed. I can completely remove it by myself in about 10 min. A little longer if I want to take the rails off too. You can roll up the sides and/or the back and drive with it in “safari” mode. Reasonably water tight. I’ve camped in mine in snow and rain storms. Cost effective. ... CONS: not secure. No key required to open it. Not as weatherproof as a hard top. If you are persnickety this is not for you. The back window warps a little from the heat. Doesn’t affect usability, but does not look perfect.”
“I got an ARE CX classic about a month ago. The paint match is good and the bottom edge is straight on mine. I don't know if ARE's quality is any better recently, or maybe I just got lucky with those things. At the price point of the Leer, I'd probably also consider the RSI SmartCap.”
“I have owned a few Leer and more recently an ARE CX. While I like the back door on the ARE, the build quality is horrible. The bottom was not sanded and finished evenly, and the paint color is off. I saw it when I picked it up earlier this year, but I use/need my truck for work and hobbies and could not go any longer without a canopy. I accepted it as-is. I regret my decision and would never buy another ARE. Of those two choices, I would recommend the Leer. I agree, I think the Leer look better on the taco.”
“I ordered a Leer cap the day I had the final VIN. Two months later, I asked the dealer where my cap was. They called Leer and was told they hadn't recieved any windoors from China. I cancelled my order that Monday and ordered a SmartCap. I had it on Wednesday. It's much better than the Leer I had on my 2016.”
“I have a Leer shell on one truck, and an ARE shell on the other. The ARE appears to be more robust, but the Leer has (had) better fit and finish when it was new. I looked at the RSI smart cap but decided against it for a couple of reasons: high price, clunky looking fit compared to a contoured fiberglass shell, only comes in black, possible heat buildup on the surface and in the bed, to name a few. I think the modularity is both a strength and a weakness. Which is why I went with another fiberglass shell.”
