Best Bed Rack for a Pickup: Leitner, Xtrusion or Yakima by the Job

Quick Take
For a rooftop tent you drive down dirt roads, buy the Leitner ACS FORGED. Leitner rates it 400 lb off-road, 800 lb on-road and 1,400 lb parked, and it shows no play under a tent. To keep holes out of the bed and a roll-up or Retrax cover on the truck, buy the Xtrusion Overland XTR1, rated 450 lb off-road, 850 on-road and 1,550 parked, capped by your truck's bed-rail limit. For kayaks, bikes, boards or a ladder on a rack that comes off between trips, buy the Yakima OverHaul HD. Its towers clamp on without drilling, adjust from 19 to 30 in and carry 300 lb off-road.
Leitner and Xtrusion sell direct, so we earn nothing on either; the Yakima is the one on Amazon. Whichever you buy, plan around the off-road number if the loaded rack will ever leave pavement, and stay under the lowest limit in the chain, from the rack and any cover it rides on to the truck's payload. On a 2024-2025 Ranger, Yakima says the bed rail caps can deform under a rack, so settle that before anything clamps to them.
Three racks, one per job, each with the truck and bed fits we confirmed on its maker's own fitment pages. See picks ↓
A bed rack puts the load above the bed and leaves the floor free underneath, for a rooftop tent over a drawer system, kayaks over a dog crate, or a ladder running out over the cab. How a rack meets the truck decides most of what it can do. The FORGED anchors to the bed walls, the XTR1 and the OverHaul clamp to the bed rails, and some versions ride on a tonneau cover's rails instead, Leitner's and Yakima's with lower ratings.
We've reviewed three racks, and each one is a pick here for a different job: the Leitner ACS FORGED, the Xtrusion Overland XTR1 and the Yakima OverHaul HD. Racks we haven't reviewed aren't in this guide. Each pick is sold one part per truck and bed, or with a fit kit, so match the fitment rows to your truck before you order.
Pick the rack by the job
What rides up top and where you drive with it decide this, in that order:
- A rooftop tent on dirt roads: the Leitner ACS FORGED. Its rear support arms anchor into the bed walls and give it a second support plane, and tents, awnings and pods ride on it without play. Most installs drill the bed walls; Leitner's no-drill NDNS keeps the same ratings with a fixed rear bar and no arms.
- No drilling, and a cover you want to keep: the Xtrusion XTR1. It clamps to the factory bed rails on every truck we cover, its wide brackets let most roll-up covers sit on top of its feet, and a Retrax version bolts to a Retrax XR or EQ cover's rails. Each rack is built to order, and Xtrusion estimates four to seven weeks.
- A rack that comes off between trips: the Yakima OverHaul HD. The towers lift off their bases in minutes and set anywhere from 19 to 30 in, and Yakima's Tonneau Kit 1 bolts them to several T-slot covers. It carries the least of the three, and the crossbars are sold separately.
- Drawers under the rack: Leitner says all its versions work with the DECKED Drawer System, and DECKED says its drawers work with Leitner's floor-mounted supports. It's the pairing we'd pick for tools below and a tent above.
- Dry, locked storage first: no rack keeps anything dry. Settle the cover or cap first, then pick a rack that works with it.

On paper the XTR1 carries the most: 50 lb more off-road than the FORGED and 150 lb more than the OverHaul, whose figures also include the rack's own weight. The numbers don't settle it. The FORGED's support arms are why it stays stiff under a heavy tent on washboard, and that's the job we'd buy it for, drilling and all. The XTR1 keeps the bed floor free of supports and takes a roll-up cover without a different rack. The OverHaul is the only one you can lift off in minutes, the only one on Amazon, and the cheapest of the three on the Gen14 F-150 short bed, even with its crossbars added. The FORGED is the most expensive there, with the XTR1 noticeably cheaper.
Parked, on-road and off-road ratings
Every rack here carries three published numbers, and they describe three situations. The parked (static) figure is the rack standing still, which is what covers a tent with people sleeping in it. The on-road figure is the rack moving on pavement. The off-road figure is the rack moving on dirt, and it's the smallest because every bump multiplies the force a load puts on the rack. On the FORGED and the XTR1 it's under a third of the parked number; on the OverHaul, under 40%. A rooftop tent is a load in motion every mile it rides up there, so if the loaded truck will ever leave pavement, the off-road figure is the one to buy against. A big parked number is never a tent-plus-trail rating.
Here's what a 150 lb tent does to each rack's off-road rating:
A 150 lb tent | Leitner ACS FORGED | Xtrusion XTR1 | Yakima OverHaul HD |
|---|---|---|---|
Off-road rating | 400 lb | 450 lb | 300 lb |
Counted against it | The 150 lb tent | The 150 lb tent | 219 lb: the 69 lb rack system plus the tent |
Share of the rating | 37.5% | A third | 73% |
Left for pods, fuel, water and an awning | 250 lb | 300 lb | 81 lb |
Payload used, rack plus tent | 235 lb | About 230 lb | 219 lb |
Yakima's weight-limit diagram counts the OverHaul's own 69 lb combined system against its ratings, so that column includes the rack. Leitner and Xtrusion publish their figures as weight capacity and don't say whether the rack's own weight counts, so their columns count the tent alone; counted Yakima's way, rack included, the FORGED has 165 lb left and the XTR1 about 220. If your total runs close on any of the three, get the maker's figure for your setup in writing. And read the warranty before you plan the trip. Leitner and Xtrusion both exclude damage from high-speed off-road driving, and Yakima's lifetime warranty lists off-road driving among its exclusions, including backroads that are rough, washed out or strewn with boulders and ruts, while its product page sells a 300 lb off-road rating. Yakima also defines off-road narrowly: forest service roads, access roads and other non-technical terrain at moderate speeds.
The lowest limit in the chain
A rack's rating is one link. Never exceed the lowest of these:
- The rack, for how you drive: off-road, on-road or parked, as above. Yakima also cuts its ratings by 40% when the front and rear crossbars sit less than 36 in apart, and its fit guide prints a weight limit for each truck, from 496 to 500 lb.
- The cover or kit it rides on: a rack on a cover's rails carries less. Leitner's TONNEAU version is rated 400 lb on-road and 800 lb parked in its FAQ and install guide, with no off-road rating, because the rack is secured through the cover; the spec list on the same page still shows higher figures. Yakima's Tonneau Kit 1 drops the OverHaul to 300 lb on-road and 180 lb off-road. RealTruck rates the RetraxPRO XR at 500 lb evenly distributed on the closed cover and publishes no rack, T-slot or dynamic (on-road or off-road) limit, so ask RealTruck and the rack maker before a tent goes on any Retrax build.
- The bed rails: Xtrusion caps every XTR1 figure at the truck's bed-rail capacity, whichever is less, and the rails are where the 6th gen Ranger gets complicated.
- Your payload: it's on the door-jamb sticker, and the rack, the tent, the gear in the bed and everyone in the cab all count against it.
- The tent or accessory maker: its own limits for the tent and its mounts apply on top of the rack's.
On the Ranger, follow the makers, not the forum fixes. Yakima's fit guide marks the 2024-2025 Ranger SuperCrew's 60 in bed as no fit on the bed rails because the rail caps can deform under a rack, lists the 2026 Ranger as a fit because Ford updated the rail caps to take truck racks, and says 2024 Rangers built on or before September 19, 2024 need Ford's load box reinforcement brackets first. Xtrusion's 2024-on Ranger supplement adds billet spacers under the bed-rail trim and makes you responsible for confirming the truck has Ford's OEM bed reinforcement, which it says some 2024-on Rangers don't include. Leitner lists a FORGED part for the 2024-on Ranger and Ranger Raptor; ask Leitner about your build year's rail caps before you order. Homemade shims are a gamble we wouldn't take: on one Ranger, a rack too long for its shims bent the bed rail past them.
Drill or clamp
Only the FORGED asks for holes. Leitner's FAQ calls it a no-drill bolt-on, but its install guides have you drill the bed walls near the tailgate and set rivet nuts for the rear support arms on every truck we cover except the Tacoma, whose guide bolts through holes already in the bed. The Maverick guide enlarges six existing holes the same way. With a spray-in liner, the guide has you cut it back around each hole, and a drop-in plastic liner has to come out first. If you drill, the install guide governs, and treat the bare metal so it doesn't rust.
If you won't put holes in the bed, you still have three choices. Leitner's NDNS clamps to the rails with the FORGED's ratings and a fixed rear bar. The XTR1 needs no drilling on any truck we cover; Silverado and Sierra racks mount in the stake pockets, which can mean opening up the trim around them, and Toyota owners can order T-nuts for the factory bed-rail track. The OverHaul's BedGrip clamps hold the bases to the rails, Yakima says drilling the attachment system isn't permitted, and Tacomas and Tundras need Bed Track Kit 1 for the factory tracks. We'd drill for the FORGED only when a heavy tent will live on it.
Height, the cab and crossbar spacing
Choose the height for the longest thing you'll carry. The FORGED's load bars sit 23 in above the bed caps, fixed. The XTR1 comes in two preset heights per truck, a mid and a cab height (17 and 23 in on the full-size trucks, 15 and 21.5 in on the Tacoma, Ranger and Colorado, 13 and 15 in on the Maverick), or any whole inch from 10 to 26 in on the Custom Height version. The OverHaul's towers adjust on the truck from 19 to 30 in, so the bars go up to cab height for lumber or a kayak over the roof and back down to cut the wind.
If a ladder or lumber will span a cab rack and the bed rack, measure both before you buy. On one truck, a Sherpa cab rack's crossbars sat about an inch below the Leitner's load bars, enough that a ladder across both needed a shim. A bed camera or a camera mirror is worth checking too; on one Tundra, the FORGED's front crossbar left both usable.
Crossbar spacing matters most on the Yakima, because you set it yourself. Its full ratings need at least 36 in between the front and rear crossbars; at 32 to 35 in, Yakima caps the rack at 300 lb, a 40% cut from 500. The FORGED's rear bar slides forward with a twist of a knob, so a motorcycle or a mounted bike fits under it, and on the OverHaul you raise the rear towers for the same job.
Racks and tonneau covers
A rack and a cover share the top of the bed rails, and each of our picks settles that differently. For the cover side, with every cover we'd mount a rack on and the ones whose makers rule it out, see our guide to the best tonneau cover for a bed rack.
- Leitner: the FORGED and NDNS stand in the bed with no cover under them. A cover means the TONNEAU version, or Leitner's rails-only kit for a FORGED you already own, on a cover Leitner lists: the Retrax PRO XR, EQ and ONE XR, and Pace Edwards' Explorer Series rails and UltraGroove. Leitner strongly recommends a powered cover with it. Keep a loaded TONNEAU on pavement.
- Xtrusion: on a standard install the rack's wide brackets clamp to the bed rails and most roll-up covers' rails sit on top of them, sealed with 1/4 in foam. Some covers need changes to the cover or its rails, a BAK Revolver X4ts works only with the rack set at 9 degrees, and tri-folds and Diamondback covers won't open under it. The Retrax build bolts to a Retrax XR or EQ's rails instead.
- Yakima: Tonneau Kit 1 bolts the towers to the Retrax XR covers, the RetraxPro EZ-OFF FRC-4000, Pace Edwards UltraGroove except on the 2004-on F-150, and Embark LS, and Roll-N-Lock's M-Series XT and E-Series XT take it with an adapter Roll-N-Lock sells through its customer service. Diamondback covers take the rack through Bed Track Kit 2. A standard roll-up won't work, because the towers angle inward and the rolled cover can't pass them.
Every cover that carries a rack costs bed space or access. A retractable's canister takes part of the front of the bed for good, and a Diamondback's lids have to clear the rack to open. If the rack has to sit on a cover, we'd build on the RetraxPRO XR and buy Yakima Tonneau Kit 1 or Leitner's TONNEAU for it, then load to the kit's numbers, not the cover's 500 lb.

Colorado and Canyon (3rd gen) | 5 ft (2023+) | 2023+ Short Bed | 2023-2026 Crew Cab 61.7 in, 55 in bar |
A few trucks narrow the choice on their own. A DT Ram with RamBox rules out the FORGED and the OverHaul, and the XTR1 page says nothing about RamBox, so ask Xtrusion before you count on it. A Sierra with the CarbonPro bed rules out the OverHaul. On a 2024-2025 Ranger, the OverHaul is off the bed rails entirely, and the other two come with Ranger-specific conditions you settle with the maker first. For a 4th gen Tacoma long bed, Yakima's guide shows a record whose bed field doesn't match, so the fitment table carries a search link; check fit for your truck. The same mismatch on an 8 ft Gen14 means asking Yakima before you order.
How we'd set each one up
A rooftop tent that lives on the truck and dirt roads to camp: the Leitner ACS FORGED, with the holes drilled and treated per Leitner's guide, and DECKED drawers underneath if tools ride along. We'd plan the load around 400 lb, not 1,400.
A roll-up cover we want to keep and no holes in the bed: the Xtrusion XTR1, ordered early and checked against the pack list the day the boxes land. Kayaks, bikes and a ladder some weeks and an empty bed the rest: the Yakima OverHaul HD, set at least 36 in between crossbars, with the 69 lb rack counted inside its 300 lb off-road figure. On a 2024-2025 Ranger, we'd settle the rail question with the rack maker and Ford before buying any of them.

What owners say
Rack owners buy for the job the rack does. A Leitner ACS Forged owner on a Tundra runs it over DECKED drawers and still hauls tall items, with the bed camera and camera mirror seeing under the front crossbar. Yakima OverHaul HD owners like the adjustable height and the channel mounts, and one moved theirs from a Super Duty, after many nights in a rooftop tent on a Retrax, to a Tacoma. The cost of a rack on a Retrax shows up in the bed: on one owner's truck the canister took about a foot, enough to make a 6 ft bed feel like a 5 ft one. An Xtrusion XTR1 owner moved up from bed bars that left everything riding in the bed. Ranger owners warn that the bed rails won't carry a rack without help and that a rack, tent and gear sag the rear; the owner who bent a rail past homemade shims later reported a solid homemade mount, which we still wouldn't copy over the rack makers' own Ranger hardware. We'd pick the rack for the load and the road, then check the bed rails and the payload before anything goes up top.
“The cartridge takes up about 12" away from the bed. I have the Retrax with the yakima overhaul hd and while i love the convenience/simplicity of the Retrax, it does remove some extra space the 6ft bed afforded me (effectively turning it into a 5ft bed).”
“I just got the xtrusion xtr1 bed rack on my Silverado after using the Billie bars for the last few years where anytime we went anywhere I’d just put everything in the bed.”
“After much waffling, I went with the Leitner ACS Forged on my truck. Best option for me to increase secure storage with my DECKED drawer system taking up half the bed height and still be able to haul the occasional tall item. I can confirm that the Leitner system does not interfere with the digital rearview nor the bed camera. Both are able to ‘see’ under the front crossbar and even with GearPods on both sides, the bed camera is still quite useful.”
“I have had the Yakima overhaul HD on a super duty with a Retrax cover, spent 20 consecutive nights on top of it in a RTT, worked really well. The Yakima was also on a Tacoma TRD off road as well with no cover, and looking for options on what I want to do on the TRD Pro. I say all this because it is a very versatile piece of equipment that can be moved from truck to truck for things I like doing, essentially future proofing it a bit.”
“I have the Yakima Overhaul HD (adjustable) height and love it. I found it comparable in price to a lot of the custom overland racks and still quite modular with the channel mounts.”
“The problem is the bedrails, which will not support a rack. People have been fabricating their own shims to put in the openings in the bedrail to provide support under the rack. I did this with some high density plastic, but my rack was too long and deformed the bed rail past the shim fairly badly.”
“Rack, RTT, and gear in the bed had a good amount of sag. Even now with just the rack and minimal weight in the bed it has some drop. I knew all that going in so not a knock on the truck.”
