Best Tonneau Cover for a Multifunction Tailgate: GM and Ram Picks

Quick Take
For a Silverado or Sierra 1500 with the MultiPro or Multi-Flex tailgate, or a DT Ram 1500 with the split tailgate, buy the TruXedo Sentry CT. No cover we've reviewed keeps a bed drier, it rolls up against the cab, and TruXedo lists it for both GM tailgates on the short and standard beds and in split-gate versions for both Ram beds. The UnderCover Ultra Flex is the folder we'd pick for the same trucks.
The listing decides the fit, not the brand. On a Ram without RamBoxes, the split gate brings braces in the front corners of the bed, so buy a version made for it. With RamBoxes and the split gate, the TruXedo Lo Pro and the RetraxPRO XR are the picks whose RamBox listings and maker pages agree they fit. For Ford's Pro Access tailgate on the 2024-on F-150, none of the Amazon listings for the covers we've reviewed mentions it, and neither do the maker pages we checked, so check fit for your truck before you order.
Each pick below carries only the listings that name your tailgate, by truck and bed, with the notes from that listing. See picks ↓
A tailgate that opens three ways is a reason to buy a truck and a reason to return a tonneau cover. GM's six-function tailgate, which GMC calls MultiPro and Chevrolet calls Multi-Flex, folds an inner gate down inside the main one. Ram's multifunction gate, available on the DT Ram 1500 since 2019, splits 60/40 into two doors that swing open, and still drops like a normal gate. Ford's Pro Access tailgate, offered on the F-150 from 2024, adds a door that swings open from the driver's side, and the whole gate still drops too. All three put moving parts right where a cover's rear seal sits, and makers answer with separate parts and fine print.
Each pick carries only the listings we confirmed that state they work with the tailgate in question. That rules out a lot of listings, and on the F-150 it rules out all of them.
If your Ram has RamBoxes, our best tonneau cover for a RamBox Ram 1500 guide covers the rail swap that comes first.
What we would buy for each tailgate
- GM MultiPro or Multi-Flex (T1XX): the Sentry CT. Its 5 ft 10 in and 6 ft 7 in listings say they work with both GM tailgates, and RealTruck's page for the short-bed part says it works with or without them. If you'd rather fold, the Ultra Flex listings say the same and let you close the tailgate with the cover up or down.
- Ram split gate, no RamBox (DT): the Sentry CT again, in its split-gate version for the 5 ft 7 in or 6 ft 4 in bed. RealTruck's pages for both split-gate CT parts say they ship without the quick-release system. The Ultra Flex and the BAKFlip F1 have split-gate listings for both beds too. The Lo Pro has one for the 5 ft 7 in bed only.
- Ram split gate with RamBoxes (DT): the Lo Pro or the RetraxPRO XR. Both RamBox listings say they fit with or without the split gate, and RealTruck's pages for both parts agree. The Ultra Flex RamBox listing stops at 2022 and doesn't say, though RealTruck's page for that part says it works with either, and the F1 is in dispute between Amazon and RealTruck.
- Ford Pro Access (2024-on F-150): nothing we can recommend on the listing's word, because no listing for the covers we've reviewed, and no maker page we checked, addresses it. Pick by the job, then confirm with the seller before you pay.
- Power tailgate: any of the picks, with a check the day it goes on. We'd skip the Tyger T3 on a GM truck with one: its listings warn that the cover will interfere with the power tailgate.
For the F-150 picks by job, see our best tonneau cover for an F-150 guide.
Where a multifunction tailgate meets the cover
A cover seals in three places: the front bulkhead at the cab, the side rails and the top of the tailgate. A multifunction gate changes the third and sometimes the first two.
- The tailgate seal: on a plain gate the cover's rear seal rides one solid top edge. Swing open half of a split gate, or fold down a MultiPro inner gate, and that edge moves in pieces. Whether a given cover lets each piece open with the cover shut is something the makers here don't say: their listings only say the cover is for trucks with that tailgate. A Roll-N-Lock owner (the post doesn't name the model) reports the MultiPro working fully with that cover pulled shut on a 2020 Sierra 1500.
- The ends of a split gate: split-gate owners report gaps at each end of the gate where the cover's seal doesn't reach, most of them on trucks that also have RamBoxes, which leave open back corners of their own. Plan to fill them.
- The front of a Ram bed: on a DT with the split gate and no RamBoxes, Ram braces the bed walls with brackets in the front corners. Those braces block the rails of covers made for the standard gate, and makers sell separate split-gate parts. One owner put an Ultra Flex on a split-gate truck without RamBoxes only after modifying the rails and installing it in reverse; the post doesn't say which part, and UnderCover lists split-gate parts for both beds. RamBox beds don't have the braces, but the listings still split on RamBox plus split gate, so follow the listing rather than the rule of thumb.
- Power tailgates: a gate that closes itself needs the cover's rear edge clear of it. BAK's install sheet for the F1 says to check that a powered tailgate works properly with the cover shut and to adjust the cover toward the cab if it doesn't. WeatherTech's manual for its AlloyCover says trucks with power tailgates typically need the rails set slightly higher.
A habit that matters on any of these trucks: with the Sentry CT, the rear seal sits on top of the closed tailgate, so the gate closes first and the cover second, and TruXedo support says not to drive with the tailgate down and the cover closed.
Listings that name your tailgate
Each cell is what the cover's Amazon listing says for that setup, with RealTruck's notes where they add to it. "Split-gate listing" means a separate listing made for that tailgate.

The F1's split-gate listings say New Body Style and start at 2020, though RealTruck's own fit line for the 5 ft 7 in part reads 2019-2025, so on a 2019 truck with the split gate, confirm with the seller. Every other Ram listing here starts at 2019, and all of them but the Sentry CT's 6 ft 4 in split-gate listing, which says New Body Style, name the truck only as the Ram 1500. Ram also sold the older Ram 1500 Classic from 2019, so our fitment notes say where a listing doesn't name the body style.
On the F1 RamBox part, Amazon's listing says it fits with and without the split gate, while RealTruck's page for the same part, 772227RB, says it isn't compatible. Get the answer in writing from RealTruck before you order that one.

On most trucks none of the five needs a drill for its clamps, per the makers, and no maker publishes a cover weight. The F1 and the RetraxPRO XR come with drain tubes to route to the bed's drain holes, and some PRO XR installs drill through the plastic plugs at the front of the bed to reach them; RealTruck's pages don't describe drains for the other three.
The load figures assume weight spread across the closed cover. They describe panel strength, not a shelf for a toolbox or a cooler.
Water at the back of the bed
A split gate is harder to seal than a plain one, whatever cover sits on it. Owners report a gap at each end of the gate, most of them on RamBox trucks. Stick-on foam or weatherstrip stacked to fill the end gaps cuts the water a lot. It won't make the bed dry in a car wash, and some water can still get past the top of the gate where the cover's seal strip meets it.
If dry cargo comes first, buy the Sentry CT. It has the best water record of any cover we've reviewed and the only low reading on our leak-risk gauge. The Ultra Flex reads moderate and lets in a little when it isn't dry. F1 owners who describe their own bed mostly report little or no water, but there are too few of them for a gauge reading. The RetraxPRO XR reads moderate, with water along the side rails first and then at the tailgate. The Lo Pro is as dry as its vinyl is tight.
The Pro Access gate raises the same question at a new seam, with almost no owner record yet. An F-150 owner with the Pro Access tailgate added foam tape around the tailgate edges to slow water there, and it helped some. Hose-test any cover before you trust it, and keep anything that can't get wet in a bin at the back of the bed.
Power tailgates on GM trucks and the F-150
F-150 owners mostly report power tailgates working with the cover shut, and the check takes a minute: with the cover closed, run the gate down and up a few times. If it reverses or stops short, BAK's fix for the F1 is moving the cover toward the cab, and WeatherTech's for the AlloyCover is raising the rails.
Owners disagree about Roll-N-Lock's manual covers. On a power tailgate F-150, an A-Series owner's gate goes up and down with the cover locked, while another owner moved to the electric E-Series because, in that owner's account, the manual covers lock to the tailgate and the power gate can't lower. That claim takes in the manual M-Series we've reviewed, so ask Roll-N-Lock before you order any of its covers for a power gate. On a Gen14 F-150 with the power tailgate, the LEER HF650M lets the gate go up and down with the cover shut.
The one cover we've reviewed that rules itself out is the Tyger T3 on the T1XX: both Silverado and Sierra listings warn that equipping the cover will interfere with the power tailgate. None of our five picks' listings mentions a power tailgate either way, so check yours on the day the cover goes on.
Covers to skip for each tailgate
- Ram split gate: the LEER HF650M (LEER says it won't work with the 60/40 multifunction tailgate or RamBox), the BAK Revolver X4s (RealTruck says its 5 ft 7 in parts aren't compatible, the RamBox one included), the Gator EFX (RealTruck says the 5 ft 7 in isn't compatible; the 6 ft 4 in listing excludes it), the RetraxONE XR (both listings exclude it), the Tyger T3 and the Rough Country Low Profile (both makers rule out the split gate). The RetraxPRO XR's standard listings exclude the split gate too; only its RamBox version fits.
- Ram split gate, with care: the Roll-N-Lock M-Series has no split-gate part for a bed without RamBoxes, and its RamBox listing says it fits the split gate while RealTruck says it doesn't. Peragon says its Landmark needs a Right On Bracket for the split gate from 2025 on and doesn't say for earlier DTs. The BAKFlip MX4 has a 6 ft 4 in split-gate listing, but we rate its leak risk high.
- GM MultiPro or Multi-Flex: the Tyger T3, whose listings don't mention either tailgate and warn about the power tailgate. The Gator EFX, the Rough Country Low Profile, the Peragon Landmark and the WeatherTech AlloyCover are sold for the T1XX, but their makers say nothing about the MultiPro, so ask first.
- Ford Pro Access: no listing for a cover we've reviewed, and no maker page we checked, says either way. That's a gap in the listings, not a known conflict.
Plenty of covers we've reviewed list MultiPro and Multi-Flex compatibility without making our picks: the BAKFlip MX4 and G2, the BAK Revolver X4s, the RetraxONE XR, the Roll-N-Lock M-Series, the 2019-2021 Armor Flex standard-bed listing and the LEER HF650M, whose listings say they include the MultiPro tailgate. On the Ram, the BAKFlip G2 has a 5 ft 7 in split-gate listing from 2020. Their reviews say where each falls short of the picks.
Before you order
- Name your tailgate: MultiPro, Multi-Flex, the Ram split gate, Pro Access or a power gate. Buy the listing that names it, not a listing that just doesn't mention it.
- Look in the front corners: on a DT without RamBoxes, the split gate's braces are there. A cover for the standard gate won't seat on them without rail work.
- Settle disputes in writing: where Amazon and the maker disagree, as on the F1 RamBox part, get the answer from RealTruck before the box ships.
- Plan the seal: expect gaps at the ends of a split gate, worst with RamBoxes; have foam or weatherstrip on hand.
- Test the gate: with the cover shut, open and close every way your tailgate moves, power included, before you load the bed.
On a 2024-on F-150 with Pro Access, search for covers listed for your bed and check fit for your truck with the seller.

What owners say
DT owners talk about the split gate more than any other tailgate. The most common report is the braces in the front corners of a split-gate Ram's bed that keep standard cover rails from seating on trucks without RamBoxes; several owners add that RamBox beds don't have the braces, though the cover makers' listings still disagree on RamBox trucks. Others describe gaps or water at the split gate, mostly on RamBox trucks, and some fill the gaps with foam. Owners run the BAKFlip MX4 and F1, the UnderCover Ultra Flex and Armor Flex, Mopar's roll-up and Retrax's PRO MX on these trucks; one couldn't move a BAK Revolver X4s to a new split-gate truck because BAK says it won't fit. F-150 owners mostly report power tailgates working with the cover shut, on the LEER HF650M, the WeatherTech AlloyCover and a Roll-N-Lock A-Series, while one owner moved to Roll-N-Lock's electric E-Series to keep the power gate's full function. Silverado and Sierra owners say little about the MultiPro, and one Pro Access owner reports foam tape at the tailgate edges helping some.
“The main issue is that the brackets used at the front of the bed to brace the sidewalls (due to the MFT) do not allow for traditional bed cover rails to fit properly. I just did a lot of looking online for solutions and put on the Undercover Armor Flex hard tri-fold.”
“Tonneau covers for MFT WITHOUT Ramboxes only. It’s a long thread but you can gain a ton of valuable information there. Most seem to be going with a canister type cover but I went with the undercover ultra flex and had to do some rail modifications and reverse installation”
“I had a Bak Revolver X4S on my ‘20 1500, great cover, no leaks anywhere. Took it off when I bought my ‘24, but it has the MFT. From what I now understand from Bak there is no way to fit the Bak on a Ram with the MFT.”
“I have a 2020 Rebel Black Package with MFT, Ramboxes and BUG. Mine has the silver rails and the Bakflip MX4 fits perfectly.”
“Even the Mopar Roll-Up Tonneau Coverhas that gap on RamBox/MFT trucks! I used 1/4" thick by 1.5" wide heavy density stick-on foam that came on a roll. I cut pieces to fit the length and stacked 4 pieces to get the ~1" needed to fill the gap. It's held up for almost 2 years now and it keeps water out very well..at least at those corners..some water gets past the cover-to-MFT top though, as the seal strip isn't a tight fit..and I used the higher pressure Touchless Wash at the car wash.”
“It fits snug with the tailgate. Even when I have the roll n lock locked the power tailgate goes up and down with no issues.”
