Best Tonneau Cover for a Ram 1500: DT Picks by Tailgate and RamBox

By Dale Okonski · Updated October 2026

Independent editorial guide. We never accept payment for coverage, though we may earn a commission if you purchase through our links.

Quick Take

On a 2019-on Ram 1500, the DT generation, the TruXedo Sentry CT is the cover we'd put on most beds. It has the best water record of any cover we've reviewed and the only low reading on our leak-risk gauge, and it rolls up tight against the cab instead of folding into your rear window. TruXedo sells it for both DT beds, 5 ft 7 in and 6 ft 4 in, in versions for trucks with and without the multifunction split tailgate.

RamBoxes change the answer. We couldn't confirm a Sentry CT for a RamBox bed, so on those trucks look at the UnderCover Ultra Flex (a 2019-2022 RamBox listing for trucks with the silver cargo rails), the RetraxPRO XR or the budget TruXedo Lo Pro, all with RamBox listings. And check the body style before you pay: Ram sold the older Ram 1500 Classic alongside the DT from 2019, and most cover listings just say "Ram 1500".

Our five picks below each list only the DT beds we confirmed on Amazon, sorted by tailgate and RamBox, so you can match yours line by line. See picks ↓

Best Tonneau Cover for a Ram 1500: DT Picks by Tailgate and RamBox

Three questions decide a DT cover before brand ever comes into it. Does the bed have RamBoxes? Does the truck have the multifunction tailgate, the split gate LEER calls the 60/40? And is the bed 5 ft 7 in or 6 ft 4 in? Cover makers answer those with separate listings, and the wrong listing ends in a return label.

The TruXedo Sentry CT leads because it keeps water out better than anything else we've reviewed and has listings for either bed with either tailgate. Where it stops, on RamBox beds, the other four picks take over, along with racks, security and a tight budget.

Ram's own Mopar covers are the obvious first stop, and they aren't on our list. We haven't reviewed either the soft or the hard Mopar tri-fold. Reports on the hard one's sealing are mixed, the soft one draws complaints about security and highway noise, and we'd shop the picks below first.

Picks by job on a DT Ram

Match the job to the cover, then match the listing to your bed.

  • Most beds, and the driest one: the Sentry CT. Aluminum slats sit under a canvas top, roll to the cab and strap there, and lock back down into a hard deck. Water reports on it range from bone dry to car-wash drips, and nobody describes wet cargo. RealTruck rates it at 400 lb evenly distributed with a 5-year warranty. On a RamBox bed, look at the other picks first: we couldn't confirm a RamBox listing for it.
  • A hard folder for any DT bed: the Ultra Flex. It has listings for both beds with and without the split tailgate, plus a 2019-2022 RamBox listing, and folded, its panels stand on prop rods clear of the cab. Its non-RamBox listings say you can shut the tailgate with the cover open or closed. It's rated 400 lb with a 5-year warranty, and it costs less than the CT on all four matching listings.
  • Rack on top: the RetraxPRO XR. Its T-slot rails run the length of the cover, and its keyed latch holds the cover locked wherever you stop it. It's the most expensive pick, the canister costs about a foot of floor, and its standard listings don't fit the split tailgate. There's a separate RamBox listing that fits with either tailgate.
  • Tools left in the bed: the LEER HF650M, on a bed with neither RamBox nor the split tailgate. LEER rules out both. Nobody opens its CYNC latch with a coat hanger: it lets go, from either side, only once the tailgate is down. Four panels also make a shorter stack than three. The warranty is 3 years, and LEER no longer lists it on its own website.
  • Budget: the Lo Pro, a soft vinyl roll-up with a limited lifetime warranty. Its listings cover the 5 ft 7 in bed with either tailgate or RamBoxes and the 6 ft 4 in bed with the standard tailgate, and its RamBox listing is the least expensive among our picks. It has no lock and no load rating, and a car wash can push water in at the corners.

Their makers describe all five as clamp-on covers that need no drilling on most trucks, and none publishes a cover weight. The drill sometimes comes out for the RetraxPRO XR's drain tubes, which have to reach the bed's drain holes; some installs drill through the plastic plugs at the front of the bed to get there. LEER says its cover needs no drain tubes at all.

Every rating above assumes a load spread evenly over the whole closed cover. A toolbox parked on one panel is a point load, and so is a kneeling adult; no rating here covers either, and the Lo Pro has no rating to begin with. Treat the numbers as a ceiling for flat, spread-out loads and nothing more.

Every RamBox listing we confirmed, for any cover, is for the 5 ft 7 in bed; with RamBoxes on a 6 ft 4 in bed, ask the seller before you order any of these. The RamBox listings also split on Ram's bed rails: RealTruck says the Ultra Flex RamBox part needs the silver cargo rails and won't work with the black track system, and RealTruck's index lists its Lo Pro, RetraxPRO XR and BAKFlip F1 RamBox parts for the silver rails too, though the Amazon listings don't mention rails. On a 2023-or-later RamBox truck, the Ultra Flex is out by year, which leaves the Lo Pro and the RetraxPRO XR among our picks.

The split tailgate needs its own listing too. None of the makers here says which ways the split gate will open with the cover closed; the listings only say the cover is for trucks with that tailgate. On a split-gate truck without RamBoxes, the PRO XR has no standard listing for you and the LEER is out entirely. RealTruck also says the non-split-gate 5 ft 7 in Ultra Flex won't work with UnderCover's own SwingCase toolbox.

On a TRX, the bed bar matters before the cover does. RealTruck says the Sentry CT won't work with it, and its pages for the standard-tailgate 5 ft 7 in Ultra Flex and Lo Pro say to take it out. The PRO XR and LEER listings don't mention it, so ask before you order.

Classic or DT: checking the listing is for your truck

The trap on this truck is the Ram 1500 Classic, the previous body (DS) that Ram sold alongside the DT from 2019. A cover made for one isn't made for the other, and most cover listings don't say which one they're for. Every listing among our picks starts at 2019 and names the truck only as the Ram 1500, usually the Dodge Ram 1500, except one: the Sentry CT's 6 ft 4 in split-gate listing adds "New Body Style". Each of our fitment rows says whether its listing names the body style. If yours doesn't, ask the seller to confirm it's the DT part.

Some listings help you out. BAK's MX4, G2 and F1 listings made for the split tailgate (not the RamBox versions) say New Body Style and start at 2020, so on a 2019 truck with the split tailgate, confirm with the seller. Tyger's site says its DT T3 won't fit 2019-2024 Classic models, and DECKED's DT listing rules out the Classic by name. Others point the wrong way: some UnderCover Ultra Flex listings marked 2002-2023 and 2009-2022 are for older Ram beds, the Classic included, and aren't in our DT rows.

Then match the bed. RealTruck's TruXedo, UnderCover, Retrax and BAK listings call the DT beds 5 ft 7 in (67.4 in) and 6 ft 4 in (76.3 in), though BAK's split-tailgate listings give 66.75 in and 74.5 in for those beds. LEER says 5 ft 7 in and 6.4 ft. Peragon lists the 2019-2027 New Style beds, the DT, as 5 ft 5.5 in and 6 ft 2 in. Peragon also lists an 8 ft 1.5 in Ram bed with no body-style label, and we don't count it as a DT fit.

Read the end year last. The Sentry CT and Lo Pro listings run to 2027, the Ultra Flex listings stop at 2025 (2022 for RamBox), the LEER's short-bed title and bullet disagree between 2026 and 2025, and the RetraxPRO XR titles say 2025 while their fitment bullets say 2026. On a 2026 or 2027 truck, only the CT and Lo Pro listings among our picks clearly name your year; for the rest, confirm with the seller.

How much bed each cover gives back

We'd take a roll-up on a DT, for the bed and for the view. The Sentry CT rolls up at the cab and straps there, the rear glass stays clear, and RealTruck says you get the whole bed. The habit to learn is the order: the CT's rear seal rests on the closed tailgate, so shut the gate first, then roll the cover closed. TruXedo support has told a shopper not to drive with the cover closed over a lowered tailgate.

The Ultra Flex folds its stack toward the cab and props it upright there, taking roughly the front 8 in of the bed by one owner's estimate. That leaves about 59 in of the 67.4 in short bed open, but the stack stands right behind the rear window, so expect it to block much of the view while you drive with the bed open. The LEER folds four panels instead of three. Split evenly across the short bed, that's about 17 in per panel against about 22 in for a three-panel cover, and LEER's listing says the stack locks away from the cab with the third brake light and window visible.

The RetraxPRO XR's canister takes floor for good. RealTruck publishes no footprint for it; owner measurements on other trucks put it at 12 to 13 in. Subtract 13 in from the 67.4 in short bed and roughly 54 in of full-height floor remains; from the 76.3 in bed, roughly 63 in. Flat gear and straps still slide under the canister. The cover opens while the tailgate stays shut and locked, and it stops and holds anywhere along the track.

The Lo Pro rolls to the cab like the CT, in soft vinyl. It gives back nearly the whole bed, comes off without tools on the listings that include the quick-release, and keeps out of the rear window. RealTruck says its 6 ft 4 in and split-gate 5 ft 7 in parts ship without the quick-release, whatever the Amazon listings say.

Water on a DT: rails, tailgate corners and the bulkhead

Expect some water in a DT bed with any of these covers sooner or later. When dry cargo matters most, buy the Sentry CT: it's the only cover we've reviewed with a low reading on our leak-risk gauge. The Ultra Flex and the LEER read moderate: both keep the bed dry more often than not, and when water gets past them it's usually a little. Most RetraxPRO XR covers take on a little, usually along the side rails and next at the tailgate. The Lo Pro's seal depends on vinyl tension, so it's only as dry as its top is tight.

Ram's own covers don't escape this. A self-installed Mopar hard tri-fold on a 2026 truck has two leak spots, the passenger-side bed rail behind the wheel well and the gaps at the top corners of the tailgate, though its owner likes the cover otherwise. A Retrax on a 2025 Ram, model unnamed, leaks mostly at the tailgate too, and its installer blamed the Ram's design. The rails and the tailgate corners are where we'd look first on any cover, along with the front bulkhead seal at the cab.

On a RamBox bed, check the fit along the rails before you call the install done. A Sentry CT on RamBoxes didn't sit entirely flush at first, and that's a cover we couldn't confirm a RamBox listing for. Over a spray-in liner, scrub the bed's front wall before you press on a taped bulkhead seal, and hose-test the closed cover before anything that matters rides back there. If you drill for drain tubes, treat the bare metal so it doesn't rust, and let the install guide for your part decide where the hole goes.

Racks and drawers on a DT

Of our picks, only the RetraxPRO XR carries a rack, and on a Ram that comes with a big condition. Leitner's TONNEAU rack rides on its T-slot rails, and Leitner lists 2019-2026 TONNEAU parts for both DT beds, but says they won't work with the multifunction tailgate or RamBoxes. So the cover-mounted rack setup we've reviewed is for a DT with a standard tailgate and no RamBoxes, which is also the only setup the standard PRO XR listings fit.

Mind the ratings. RealTruck rates the PRO XR at 500 lb evenly distributed on the closed cover and publishes no rack, T-slot or on-road limit, so don't read that number as a rack rating. Leitner's FAQ and install guide give the TONNEAU 400 lb on the road and 800 lb parked, and no off-road figure, since the rack is secured through the cover. Ask Leitner and RealTruck for a written limit for your load, and torque the rack hardware to their figures, not by feel; overtightened bolts have bent PRO XR tracks.

Leitner's bed-rail racks have the same Ram limits. Its ACS FORGED parts for the 5 ft 7 in and 6 ft 4 in beds span the DT, but Leitner says the FORGED isn't compatible with RamBoxes or the multifunction tailgate, and its install guides have you drill the bed walls for the rear support arms. The no-drill NDNS version is also out on RamBox beds, and its page says nothing about the tailgate. Pairing either with a cover means switching to the TONNEAU, and that means the PRO XR again. The other picks aren't rack bases: the Sentry CT has no rails, RealTruck says nothing about racks on it, and the Ultra Flex, LEER and Lo Pro list no rack compatibility.

Drawers are the other way to organize a Ram bed. DECKED's 5 ft 7 in DT listing isn't for RamBox beds (DECKED sells a separate RamBox version we haven't linked), rules out the Classic, and DECKED says the towing-package lighting harness on some 1500s extends too far into the bed to work with the system. DECKED says the drawers sit below the bed rails and work with most tonneau covers, without naming any, and with Leitner's racks. Under a cover, the deck leaves less height, so tall items like gas cans may stop fitting.

More reviewed covers sold for the DT

  • BAK Revolver X4s: the hard roll-up that comes closest to the Sentry CT on water. RealTruck says its 5 ft 7 in part isn't compatible with the multifunction tailgate and needs the TRX bed bar out, and its 6 ft 4 in listing doesn't mention the tailgate. One 5 ft 7 in listing says w/RamBox in Amazon's title, but RealTruck's page for that part says nothing about RamBox. It costs more than the CT on both beds.
  • BAKFlip MX4: a popular folder with a 5 ft 7 in listing for the standard tailgate and a 6 ft 4 in listing for the split gate. We rate its leak risk high because too many leak out of the box, so it isn't a pick.
  • BAKFlip G2: BAK's cheaper folder, with 5 ft 7 in listings for either tailgate and a 6 ft 4 in listing for the standard one. You lift the rear panel to close the tailgate. RealTruck sells a RamBox part we didn't find on Amazon.
  • BAKFlip F1: fiberglass-reinforced panels and the widest set of BAK listings for the DT: the 5 ft 7 in bed with either tailgate or RamBoxes and the 6 ft 4 in bed with the split gate. Amazon's RamBox listing says it fits with either tailgate, while RealTruck's notes for that part say it isn't compatible with the split gate, so confirm with RealTruck first.
  • Gator EFX: our choice among cheap hard folders, and cheaper than the LEER on both beds. RealTruck says the 5 ft 7 in cover isn't compatible with the multifunction tailgate and needs the TRX bed bar out, the 6 ft 4 in listing excludes the split gate and RamBoxes, and there's no RamBox version. Expect damp corners after hard rain.
  • RetraxONE XR: a noticeably cheaper way to get the PRO XR's T-slot rails, on one aluminum-reinforced polycarbonate panel instead of aluminum slats, with 5 ft 7 in and 6 ft 4 in listings that don't fit the split tailgate. Rated 200 lb evenly distributed with a one-year warranty. RealTruck has a RamBox part we didn't confirm on Amazon.
  • Peragon Landmark: a hard, locking retractable whose aluminum panels fold down into the front of the bed instead of rolling into a canister. Peragon sells it only direct, so we earn nothing on it. It won't fit RamBox beds. For 2025-on trucks Peragon says the multifunction tailgate needs a Right On Bracket; for earlier DTs it doesn't say, so ask. Peragon says it isn't watertight.

Two budget covers we've reviewed are sold for the DT, but neither shows up in a DT listing we could confirm on Amazon. Tyger's site lists a 5 ft 7 in T3 soft tri-fold that it says won't fit the Classic, RamBoxes or the split tailgate; search for the DT T3 and check fit for your truck. Rough Country sells its Low Profile hard tri-fold for both DT beds, but not for the multifunction tailgate, RamBoxes or a TRX with the RamBar, and the Rough Country tri-fold listed on Amazon for this truck is the Flip Up, a different cover. Search for the DT Low Profile and check fit for your truck.

Ram owners also run covers we haven't reviewed. The Mopar hard tri-fold is the factory option, and the 2026 truck above shows where it can leak. One owner traded a Mopar soft tri-fold up to the DiamondBack SE, a hard, locking lid, to keep golf clubs safe. We can't vouch for either yet, so check fit for your truck before you order.

Our pick for your Ram

Without RamBoxes, buy the Sentry CT in the listing for your bed and tailgate. No cover we've reviewed has a better water record, it leaves you the bed and the rear view, and there's a listing for each non-RamBox bed and tailgate. Take the LEER instead if the bed holds tools overnight and your truck has the standard tailgate, and spend up for the RetraxPRO XR only for a rack.

With RamBoxes, the Ultra Flex is the hard cover we'd buy on a 2019-2022 truck with the silver cargo rails. On a later truck it's the RetraxPRO XR or the Lo Pro among our picks, and with the black track system, plan on swapping to the silver rails first. The Lo Pro is also the budget answer for every setup in the fit table except the 6 ft 4 in bed with the split tailgate. Whatever you choose, confirm the listing is for the DT, not the Classic, before it ships.

What owners say

Ram owners mostly argue about water and security, and reports that tie a specific cover to a DT are still thin. Ram's own Mopar hard tri-fold on a 2026 truck leaks at the passenger-side rail behind the wheel well and at the tailgate gaps, and a Retrax on a 2025 leaks mostly at the tailgate, which its installer put down to the Ram's design. Owners of our picks are mostly happy: a Sentry CT on a Limited with RamBoxes and the multifunction tailgate, an Ultra Flex that fits like a glove, a RetraxPRO XR that keeps the bed locked and dry, and a LEER HF650M that stays dry apart from the gaps beside the tailgate. Ram's factory soft covers push owners toward hard ones for security: one traded a Mopar soft tri-fold for a locking DiamondBack SE to keep golf clubs safe from a pocket knife. Not every switch works out, though: an owner who went from a BAKFlip MX4 to a Retrax on a newer Ram has regretted it. We'd pick by RamBox, tailgate and bed first, then by the job.

“I bought the Mopar one for my ‘26 and installed it myself. There are a couple of leak spots on mine. One is on the passenger side bed rail behind the wheel well, and the other is the gaps on either side of the top of the tailgate.”

“I have a retrax and it leaks in my 2025. Most mine is by the tailgate tho. The installer blamed it on rams design as to why it leaks so much.”

“Bakflip MX4 (satin/matte) for sure. I used to have one, loved it, got the Retrax when I replaced my Ram with the newer model. Have regretted it ever since.”

“I recently upgraded from the Mopar soft trifold to the Diamondback SE, big fan of it so far. I never trusted my clubs in the back with a soft cover since anyone with a pocket knife could get in, but with the Diamondback, a hard, locking cover makes me feel a lot better keeping them back there.”

“I have the TruXedo Sentry CT on my Limited with ramboxes and multifunction tailgate and really like it. Plus it’s very slim and looks great.”

“I have a Retrax Pro XR on mine. I like it. I like being able to lock up the bed and keep water/dirt out.”

“Well the Ultra Flex is installed and it looks and works absolutely perfect. I really like the way it fits like a glove and the opening and closing mechanism is so nice.”

“I have the Leer HF650M quad folding cover, Love it! No Leaks! Well, except for the gaps between the tailgate and the sides of the bed. Very little if any water comes in though. Seal between leer cover and tailgate is perfect. Only negative is the panels are fiberglass and are on the heavy side”
