Tonneau Cover Car Wash: Which Washes Are Safe and How to Clean It

Quick Take
Yes, a hard tonneau cover can go through an automatic car wash, and touchless is the wash we'd choose for any cover. Expect a few drips, most often at the tailgate end: the high-pressure jets and the blowers at the exit drive water sideways into seams that rain only drips on. Soft vinyl covers need more care. Tyger recommends only touchless washes: its FAQ blames wax for vinyl damage and brushes for damage to the stitching, and its warranty rules out brush-style washes. We'd apply that rule to every soft cover.
By hand, keep it plain. RealTruck's care terms for the TruXedo Sentry CT, RetraxPRO XR, BAK Revolver X4s and UnderCover Ultra Flex all say to clean with mild automotive soap and water only. Keep lubricants, solvents and silicone or petroleum conditioners off the cover and its seals, look at the drain tubes after a wash, and in winter wash only when the truck can dry above freezing. Anything in the bed that must stay dry comes out before you pull in.
Washing every week? Send a TruXedo Sentry CT through the bay: no cover we've reviewed keeps a bed drier. Each pick links the listing for your truck and bed. See picks ↓
A car wash is a harder water test than most storms. Rain falls on top of the cover and runs off. A wash bay fires water sideways at the tailgate gap and the rail edges, then blasts the seams with air. A cover that stays dry through a week of rain can still drip after one trip through the wash.
The results run from nothing to a puddle. A new soft roll-up went through a wash with cardboard boxes in the bed as a test, and the trickle that got in didn't wet them; only boxes sitting down in the floor grooves would have picked up spots. At the other end, a dealer-installed BAKFlip MX4 TS on a 2025 Ram came back from its first car wash with standing water in the bed.
The slower damage comes from what touches the cover: wax and brushes on vinyl, a protectant on rubber seals, a pressure wand aimed into the tailgate gap. Below, each maker's rule sits next to the cover it governs, and where a maker says nothing, we say that too.
Which car washes each cover can take
Touchless is our default for every style. Brushes and cloths add nothing a hard top needs, the BAKFlip MX4's matte top scratches easily, and on vinyl they work at the stitching. Here's how each style stands:
Cover type | Wash we'd use | What the maker says | Where wash water gets in |
|---|---|---|---|
Soft roll-up or tri-fold | Touchless only | Tyger: touchless only (FAQ); wax can damage the vinyl, brushes the stitching; no brush-style washes (warranty). RealTruck's Lo Pro page says nothing about washing | The corners |
Hard folding | Touchless | RealTruck's Ultra Flex page: mild automotive soap and water only. BAK's folding sheet: lubricants and solvents could damage the rubber hinges and seals | The tailgate end, most often |
Hard roll-up | Touchless | RealTruck, Sentry CT and Revolver X4s: mild automotive soap and water only; no silicone or petroleum conditioners on the CT | A little at the tailgate end |
Retractable | Touchless | RealTruck, RetraxPRO XR: mild automotive soap and water only, no strong chemicals or cleaners, no lubricant on the rails or sealed ball bearings | The side rails and the tailgate seam |
Same on all: RealTruck's pages for the Sentry CT, Revolver X4s, RetraxPRO XR and Ultra Flex say nothing about automatic washes, brushes or pressure washers, so for a hard cover the wash is your call. We'd still go touchless and save the cover the scuffs.
Owners break the soft-cover rule, and some get away with it. A Tyger T3 on a Z71 has ridden through a carnauba-wax subscription wash every month since June 2024 and still looks new over a dry bed. A Tyger T1 has had a weekly automatic wash for a year with no real leaking. We'd still follow Tyger. Those are a year or two of washes against a five-year warranty, and a TruXedo Pro X15, a soft roll-up we haven't reviewed, gets scrubbed by roller brushes once a month and now shows a slight fade and a faint line along the crossbars, though its owner doesn't blame the brushes for either.
Where a wash gets water in, cover by cover
Wash water finds the tailgate first. A closed tailgate never meets the bed tightly, and a jet pointed at those openings drives water past seals that only have to shed falling rain. The blowers at the exit come next: they drive standing water sideways into the rail seams and folds, which is why a cover that passes a garden hose test can still drip after an automatic wash. Even a brushless wash's horizontal spray gets a little water under a BAKFlip MX4's rear seal.
Here's what the covers we've reviewed show:
Cover | Leak-risk gauge | Wash and water record |
|---|---|---|
Low | A little at the tailgate end in car washes, never wet cargo; on one truck a gappy aftermarket tailgate seal made wash leaks worse | |
Not rated | Mostly dry beds, a little near the tailgate on one cover; no drain tubes; no car-wash reports yet | |
Moderate | Water at the tailgate in a car wash on one cover; another came through an automatic wash dry | |
Moderate | A few trickles after a car wash at worst; no drain tubes | |
UnderCover Armor Flex | Moderate | Dry, or a few drops near the tailgate when a pressure washer goes under the gate |
Rough Country Low Profile | Moderate | Dry through weekly car washes on one truck; a little after a touchless wash on another |
BAKFlip MX4 | High | Hit or miss; standing water after the first wash on a dealer-installed MX4 TS |
BAKFlip F1 | Not rated | Very little through car washes on one F-150; on a LINE-X bed the adhesive bulkhead seal let go after a wash |
TruXedo Lo Pro | Not rated | Water at all four corners in a car wash on one cover; no dry wash report |
Tyger T3 | Not rated | No water after monthly car washes on one cover |
The gauge rates each cover's whole water record, rain and washes together, and we leave it off where the reports are too few. The right-hand column sticks to washes wherever owners describe them.
How to hand wash a tonneau cover
A hand wash is the gentlest option for any cover, and the only one where you decide where the water goes. Close and latch the cover and the tailgate, then work through this:
- Rinse from above. Let a garden hose run over the top so the water falls onto the cover, not into its edges. You're loosening grit before anything rubs it across the finish.
- Wash with mild automotive soap. A car-wash soap and a soft mitt, the same as the paint. That's the cleaning RealTruck's care terms allow for the Sentry CT, RetraxPRO XR, Revolver X4s and Ultra Flex, the PRO XR terms add no strong chemicals or cleaners, and Tyger's warranty calls normal soap and water enough for its vinyl. Leave degreasers, household cleaners and solvents in the garage.
- Rinse the same way. Low pressure, from the top, letting the water run off the sides of the truck.
- Dry the top before you open it. Water sitting on a cover pours into the bed the moment you fold, roll or retract it. Retrax's care text asks owners to clear pooled water first, and we'd do the same on any style. A microfiber towel does it.
- Check the drain tubes. On covers that use them, make sure each tube is still on its fitting and its far end is outside the bed. One that has slipped off drains the rails onto the bed floor.
- Air out a wet bed. If water got in, open the cover on a dry day. A carpet-style BedRug under a closed cover holds the damp and starts to smell, and BedRug suggests a hose or a power washer for the mat itself when it needs a real cleaning.
Do all of it from outside the truck, and don't climb onto the cover to reach the cab roof. Tyger's warranty says to put no weight on top of its covers, and a hard cover's rated load, such as the Ultra Flex's 400 lb, is weight spread across the whole closed cover, not one person kneeling on a panel.
Pressure washers, blowers and the tailgate seam
A pressure washer is a car wash you aim yourself, so aim it away from the seams. None of the makers in this guide publishes a safe distance for a pressure wand, and we won't make one up.
- Stand back and spray down. This is our habit, not a maker's rule: a wide spray, the wand well back from the cover, sweeping across the top so the water sheets off the sides.
- Keep it off the tailgate gap. That's where wash water most often gets in. An Armor Flex that stays dry in the rain gets a few drops when the wand goes under the gate. Some covers shrug it off, such as a LOMAX Professional cover, which we haven't reviewed, on a Tacoma, but we'd still keep the jet away from the gap.
- Don't lift the seals. Rail seals and the rubber between folding panels shed water falling on them. A jet from the side gets under their edges.
- Accept the blowers. At an automatic wash you can't aim the dryer, so expect a few drops at the seams and wipe the bed afterward. More than drips means a gap you can find with a garden hose at home; our leaking tonneau cover fixes walk through that test.
- Drawer systems under the cover. DECKED's FAQ says a car wash won't hurt its drawer system, though the high pressure makes a lot of mist and the drawers aren't sealed airtight. Shut every drawer fully before you go in, and don't get carried away with the wand.
What to put on the cover, by type
Clean is the only treatment every maker agrees on. Conditioners and protectants are where advice splits, and the warranty terms settle it.
Cover type | Clean with | Conditioner or protectant | Keep off it |
|---|---|---|---|
Soft vinyl roll-up or tri-fold | Normal soap and water (Tyger), or a touchless wash | A vinyl protectant if it parks in the sun and its maker allows one: Tyger sells its own cleaner and protectant spray; TruXedo's Lo Pro sheet allows only one made for tonneau covers, and its TruXport sheet says no vinyl conditioners at all, because they shrink the vinyl | Wax washes, brush-style washes and abrasive cleaners with silicone (Tyger) |
Hard folding | Mild automotive soap and water (RealTruck, Ultra Flex) | None approved on the pages we cite; ask the maker first | Lubricants and solvents on the hinges and seals (BAK); liquid wax, which stained one UnderCover top |
Hard roll-up | Mild automotive soap and water only (RealTruck, Sentry CT and X4s) | Sentry CT: nothing containing silicone or petroleum. X4s: owners use 303 on the top | Any protectant on the rubber seals; lubricants and solvents (BAK) |
Retractable | Mild automotive soap and water only (RealTruck, PRO XR) | Automotive non-abrasive wax on the cover and rails (Retrax's care text) | Strong chemicals or cleaners; any lubricant on the rails or sealed ball bearings |
Same on all: dry the top before you open it, check the drains, and when a maker's page is silent about a product, ask before you put it on the cover.
- Soft vinyl covers. Condition the vinyl if the truck lives outside and its maker allows it; each maker's care rules govern. An older Lo Pro, installed in 2010 and treated with UV protectant in Florida, still looks new after 15 years, and a Tyger cover conditioned about three times a year has lasted five. Tyger sells its own cleaner and protectant spray for vinyl, its FAQ rules out wax washes, and its warranty rules out abrasive cleaners that contain silicone. TruXedo's Lo Pro sheet allows only a protectant made for tonneau covers, with nothing containing silicone or petroleum, and its TruXport sheet says soap and water only and no vinyl conditioners at all, because they shrink the vinyl. That sheet also says the TruXport can be cleaned in a car wash.
- TruXedo Sentry CT. RealTruck's CT terms void the warranty if you use conditioners that contain silicone or petroleum on the top. Read the label of anything you'd put on the canvas, and ask TruXedo what it approves.
- BAK Revolver X4s. Owners treat the vinyl top with a protectant like 303, but ask BAK before you do, and never let it reach the rubber seals: treated seals on one cover turned so slick it wouldn't roll up tight until isopropyl alcohol took the 303 off. BAK's Revolver sheet puts oils, solvents and lubricants on its list of fluids that could harm the rubber seals and hinges, with the warranty at stake, and RealTruck's X4s page asks for mild automotive soap and water only.
- BAKFlip folders. BAK's folding cover sheet carries the same caution about oils, solvents and lubricants on the rubber hinges and seals. Don't count on a protectant to save the fold rubber: on a recent MX4 TS it cracked inside six months despite treatment from the first day.
- UnderCover. No liquid wax. In an Armor Flex discussion, wax left a stain lasting months on a cover its owner names only as "the Undercover." RealTruck's Ultra Flex page asks for mild automotive soap and water only and names no protectant, so ask UnderCover before anything else goes on the top.
- Retrax. RealTruck's PRO XR terms void the warranty if the rails or sealed ball bearings are lubricated, and rule out strong chemicals or cleaners. Retrax's own care text, on RealTruck's RetraxONE page, says to wash dust off rather than wipe it, and allows an automotive non-abrasive wax on the cover and rails. Rinse the tracks and let them dry.
- LEER HF650M. The HF650M is gone from LEER's own site, so we can't point you to LEER care instructions for it. Stick to soap and water.
Washing in winter
Salt is the reason to wash in winter, and the forecast decides the day. A wash leaves water in the latches, the tracks and the seals, and if it freezes there, the cover freezes shut. Pick a day above freezing with enough daylight left for the cover to dry, or put the truck in a heated garage after. A Roll-N-Lock, a cover we haven't reviewed, froze shut after washes often enough that its owner traded it for a camper shell.
If yours freezes anyway, don't force it. Retrax's care text covers ice after a car wash or an ice storm: don't force the cover open; tap lightly by hand around its edges until the weather-stripping lets go. Lock de-icer is for the key lock only, and Retrax says to keep it off the cover. Our retractable cover winter guide covers the rest.
Mistakes that cost a cover or its warranty
- Wax or brushes on vinyl. Tyger's FAQ warns against wax washes and its warranty rules out brush-style washes, and that five-year warranty runs well past the year or two of owner reports that say otherwise.
- The wrong conditioner on a Sentry CT. Silicone or petroleum in the product voids RealTruck's CT warranty.
- Lubricant on Retrax rails. It voids the PRO XR warranty, and BAK's sheets warn that lubricants can damage rubber hinges and seals.
- Protectant on the seals. On an X4s it left the seals too slippery for the cover to roll up tight.
- A fresh adhesive seal on a spray-in liner. On a LINE-X bed, a BAKFlip F1's bulkhead seal held for about two days and stopped sticking after a wash. Prep the liner first: BAK's sheet lists the supplied cleaner or isopropyl alcohol, and the surface should be dry before the seal touches it.
- Cargo that can't get wet. A wash finds the gaps a storm misses. Anything that can't take a drip comes out of the bed, or rides in a sealed tote, before you pull in.
The covers we'd put through a weekly wash
For a truck that goes through the wash every week, we'd buy the TruXedo Sentry CT. It's the driest cover we've reviewed, its car-wash misses are drips at the tailgate end, and its care rules are short: soap, water and no silicone or petroleum conditioners. If you add a tailgate seal, close every gap: a gappy aftermarket seal on one CT made its car-wash leaks worse.
The BAK Revolver X4s skips drain tubes altogether and costs more than the CT on most matching listings. The UnderCover Ultra Flex is the folder we'd wash weekly, knowing that one cover takes water at the tailgate in the wash and another doesn't. The LEER HF650M is the cheaper folder, with no drain tubes and a few trickles after a wash at worst. We'd keep the BAKFlip MX4 out of a weekly wash routine unless you're happy to dry the bed afterward; it's the only folder we rate high for leak risk. And any soft cover belongs at a touchless wash or on the end of a garden hose.

LEER HF650M Quad-Folding Tonneau Cover
Noticeably cheaper than the Sentry CT on matching listings, with seals instead of drain tubes, and a few trickles after a car wash is the worst wash report. We hold no LEER care instructions for it, and LEER no longer lists it on its own site.
Read our full review. We scored it 6.6/10.

What owners say
Owners who wash often mostly describe drips rather than a wet bed, and when they say where the water got in, it's the tailgate end, from high-pressure side spray or a wand aimed under the gate. Soft-cover owners split on Tyger's touchless-only rule: Tyger T1 and T3 owners run automatic washes, one with carnauba wax, with no leaks or visible harm so far, while a TruXedo Pro X15 owner whose wash brushes the top sees a slight fade. Vinyl protectant is common on roll-up tops, with one firm warning from an X4s owner: keep it off the rubber seals.
“I have the BakFlip MX4 on my truck and it doesn’t leak. The only water it gets in is when I go through the brushless car wash and it gets a very small amount of water in the rear caused by the high pressure horizontal spray that gets a little water under the seal.”
“I have the Tyger T1, also a soft roll up. I have had a similarly good experience with mine. I run it through an auto car wash at least weekly for the last year and haven't had any real leaking.”
“I've been running a RevolverX4S for several months now as well and am very happy with it, for the same reasons. You can open and close it with one hand, the profile is low, and you can see out the back window. I did replace my thumb knobs with nylock nuts which snugs it down tighter in the front for a better fit. Treating the cover part with 303 is key to keeping it in good shape. BUT - DO NOT PUT 303 on the rubber seals! If you do, the cover will be so slippery that it won't roll up tightly against the window when you open it, and you end up with a floppy loose mess.”
“I have a Lomax professional cover on mine and it has not leaked even with pressure washing the cracks.”
