Best Budget Tonneau Cover: Tyger T3, or the Gator EFX for a Lock

Independent editorial guide. We never accept payment for coverage, though we may earn a commission if you purchase through our links.
Quick Take
Buy the Tyger T3 Soft Tri-Fold. It costs the least of any cover we recommend, and we rate it above every other budget cover we've reviewed: vinyl over an aluminum frame, a no-drill install Tyger quotes at 5-10 minutes, and a 5-year warranty that outlasts the EFX's and the G2's. You give up a lock and any load rating, and folded it still sits over roughly the front third of the bed.
Pay more only for the one thing the T3 can't do for you. The TruXedo Lo Pro rolls up against the cab and hands back nearly the whole bed. The Gator EFX is the cheapest cover we'd buy that locks, and the Rough Country Low Profile is its drier rival on the four trucks we confirmed it for. The BAKFlip G2 undercuts the other name-brand folders we've reviewed on most matching listings and still folds clear of the whole bed. If a dry bed is why you're shopping, none of them is the answer: stretch to the TruXedo Sentry CT.
Five covers, from the bottom rung of the price ladder to the top, with the Amazon listings we matched to each truck and bed underneath. See picks ↓
We call a tonneau cover budget when it costs noticeably less than the name-brand hard folders, BAK's MX4 and UnderCover's Ultra Flex, for the same truck and bed. Four covers we've reviewed clear that bar by a wide margin: the Tyger T3 Soft Tri-Fold, the TruXedo Lo Pro, the Gator EFX and the Rough Country Low Profile. The BAKFlip G2 doesn't. It runs only a little under the MX4 and the Ultra Flex, so it's here as the top rung: the name-brand folder to price against before you leave the budget tier.
Each step down that ladder takes something away. Drop from the G2 to the EFX and you lose the fold at the cab. Drop from the EFX to the Lo Pro or the T3 and you lose the lock and any load rating. A dry bed isn't on that list, because none of these covers keeps water out well enough to buy on that alone, and the T3, the cheapest of the five, is the one we rate highest.
Each pick's verdict is the one in its full review on this site. Every cover is a separate part for each truck and bed, so check the rows under a pick against your truck before you order.
Pick by what the bed has to do
Price gets you to this list. The job decides which cheap cover belongs on your truck.
- The cheapest cover we would buy: the Tyger T3 Soft Tri-Fold. It keeps rain and prying eyes out of a daily driver's bed, clamps on without drilling and carries 5 years of warranty. There's no lock, Tyger's warranty rules out loading the top, and the folded stack takes up about the front third of the bed.
- The whole bed, often: the TruXedo Lo Pro. It rolls up against the cab and leaves the rear window alone, and its limited lifetime warranty is the longest of the five. You keep the vinyl tight by hand, and no owner reports a fully dry bed under one. TruXedo's TruXport rolls up the same way from on top of the bed rails, costs less than the Lo Pro on most same-bed listings and carries 5 years; of the two it's the one we'd buy for most trucks, and the Lo Pro's case is its flush look and lifetime warranty.
- A bed that locks: the Gator EFX. Its aluminum panels latch shut and stay locked as long as your tailgate is, and RealTruck rates it at 300 lb evenly distributed. The front third never folds, so a tall load means taking the cover off, which needs no tools.
- A bed that locks, on four trucks: the Rough Country Low Profile. Its water reports beat the EFX's, Rough Country's site gives it a 5-year warranty, and it cost more than the EFX on the one truck both have confirmed listings for. We confirmed it only for the 3rd gen Tacoma 5 ft, the Tundra 5 ft 7 in, the Maverick and the Colorado/Canyon 5 ft.
- Name brand for the least money on most trucks: the BAKFlip G2. It folds to the cab for the whole bed, is rated 300 lb, carries a 3-year warranty and costs a good deal more than the EFX. The tailgate only shuts after you raise its rear panel.
- Not reviewed: Tyger's T1 soft roll-up costs a little less than the T3 on most matching listings and rolls to the cab like the Lo Pro. Too few T1 owners have written about theirs for us to vouch for its seals or its tension, so it isn't a pick. Search the T1 and check fit for your truck.
Where budget stops: the price ladder
We rank these by what each cover costs for the same truck and bed on Amazon, compared listing by listing. We don't print the figures because they change. Here's what each step up buys, and how consistently it cost more:
Step up | What the extra money buys | Matching listings where it cost more |
|---|---|---|
Tyger T3 to TruXedo Lo Pro | A roll-up that clears nearly the whole bed and a limited lifetime warranty | All 8, by far |
Lo Pro to Gator EFX | Hard panels that lock with the tailgate and a 300 lb rating | All 9 |
EFX to Rough Country Low Profile | A drier water record and a longer published warranty | The one truck both have confirmed listings for, the 3rd gen Tacoma short bed |
EFX to BAKFlip G2 | A fold to the cab for the whole bed, 3 years of warranty instead of 2 | All 6, by a good deal |
G2 to UnderCover Ultra Flex | 400 lb, 5 years, a tailgate that works under the closed cover and a stack that stands off the glass | All 13, by a little |
Ultra Flex to TruXedo Sentry CT | Locks of its own, a roll-up that clears the whole bed, and our only low leak-risk reading | All 12 |
The big jump on this ladder sits between the budget covers and the G2; the steps above the G2 are small. That puts the G2 in the name-brand price class and leaves the four covers under it as the budget tier. Warranty doesn't climb with price: the T3, at the bottom, carries a longer one than the EFX or the G2.

None of the five publishes a cover weight, and none has a keyed lock of its own. The three hard covers lock only through the tailgate, so if yours doesn't lock, fit a tailgate lock before you trust them. Their makers call all five no-drill, clamp-on installs on most trucks. Both load ratings are for weight spread evenly across the shut cover, which a cooler on one panel isn't, and Tyger's no-weight rule on the T3 has no exception for snow.
What each cheaper step takes away
Walk down from the G2 and you give things up in a fixed order. Decide which ones you can live without.
- The lock: gone below the EFX. Tyger describes no lock on the T3, the Lo Pro has a latch and no lock, and a knife goes through vinyl either way. The EFX, the Low Profile and the G2 latch shut and stay shut while the tailgate is locked. If tools stay in the bed overnight, start your list at the EFX.
- The load rating: only the EFX and the G2 publish one, 300 lb spread evenly. RealTruck gives the Lo Pro none, Rough Country publishes none for the Low Profile, and Tyger says to keep all weight off the T3. A cover with no published number shouldn't carry anything, and 300 lb still sits 100 lb under the Ultra Flex and the Sentry CT.
- Bed access: on the 5 ft bed of a 3rd gen Tacoma, the T3's folded stack, the EFX's front panel, which doesn't fold, and the Low Profile's bolted front panel each leave about 20 in at the cab end covered. For the rest, the T3 lifts off, a one-person job; the EFX comes off without tools; the Low Profile unbolts. The Lo Pro rolls to the cab and the G2 folds there, so they're the two picks that hand back nearly the whole bed with the cover still on the truck.
- Warranty: here the cheapest cover wins. Over five years of ownership, the T3's warranty lasts the whole stretch, while the EFX's ends after year two and the G2's after year three. The Low Profile's is 5 years on Rough Country's site and 3 in the manual in the box, so save Rough Country's warranty page when you buy. The Lo Pro's lifetime warranty covers buyers from authorized dealers, Tyger won't honor its warranty on Amazon Warehouse or used covers, and RealTruck's 30-day swap on the EFX only covers RealTruck.com purchases.
- Sealing: the cheaper steps don't cost you water on their own. The T3's short record reads mostly dry, while the EFX, higher up the ladder, gets damp corners in hard rain. Inside the tier, only the step from the EFX to the Low Profile buys a drier record; for a bed you can count on staying dry, the money goes past the budget tier.
A cover that leaks is no bargain
Price can't carry a cover by itself, and our scores are built so it can't. Weather sealing counts for 40 percent of every cover's score and value for 25. Take value out and the T3 still scores ahead of the other four, so its place at the top isn't a price call. The EFX shows what happens the other way. It makes the strongest price case of the hard budget folders and shares the weakest sealing of the five with the Lo Pro: a little water at the corners, most often the rear ones by the tailgate, and one owner returned theirs for leaking too much. If cardboard boxes, electronics or paperwork ride in your bed, a cheap cover that drips on them saves you nothing.
- Tyger T3: mostly dry on a short record, too short for our leak-risk gauge. Put on the seal strip Tyger includes, and stick to touchless car washes as Tyger's FAQ asks.
- TruXedo Lo Pro: some water in every report that mentions it, from nearly watertight in Washington rain to leaks at all four corners in a car wash. Its hook-and-loop seal is only as good as the tension on the vinyl.
- Gator EFX: moderate leak risk. Seat the bulkhead seal snug, route the drain tubes out of the bed, and leave the cab end free of silicone, or the front panel stops coming out.
- Rough Country Low Profile: moderate, with a better share of dry beds than the EFX. Square rails decide it, so take your time on the install.
- BAKFlip G2: moderate. A dry bed or a few drips is the usual result; the cab end and worn seals are where water finds a way in.
Spending more within the name brands doesn't buy a dry bed by default either: we rate the BAKFlip MX4, which costs more than the G2, high for leak risk. If the bed has to stay dry, the cover to stretch for is the Sentry CT, and anything that mustn't get wet belongs in a sealed tote under any cover. Our leaking tonneau cover guide has the fix for each leak point.
When to stretch to the Ultra Flex or the Sentry CT
Pay past the budget tier when the job needs something none of these five offers. Both covers below cost far more than the four budget picks and more than the G2:
Spec | BAKFlip G2 | UnderCover Ultra Flex | TruXedo Sentry CT |
|---|---|---|---|
Rated load | 300 lb, evenly distributed | 400 lb, evenly distributed | 400 lb, evenly distributed |
Warranty | 3 years, original buyer, not transferable | 5 years, original buyer, not transferable | 5 years on rails, clamps, bows and fabric, original buyer, not transferable |
Lock | Slam latches; locked once the tailgate is shut; no keyed lock | Slam latches lock every panel; no keyed lock | Level-2 locks, a tension cable and up to six automatic latches |
Opened | Forward to the cab | Upright on prop rods, off the cab | Rolls to the cab and straps; RealTruck says 100 percent bed access |
Leak risk (our gauge) | Moderate | Moderate | Low |
- Stretch to the UnderCover Ultra Flex if you want a folder that does the G2's job with fewer compromises. You get a 400 lb rating instead of 300, a 5-year warranty instead of 3, a tailgate the listings say opens and closes under the shut cover, and a folded stack held up on prop rods away from the rear glass. It's one of the two driest folders we've reviewed, its listings include RamBox and split-tailgate Rams, and it cost only a little more than the G2 on every matching listing.
- Stretch to the TruXedo Sentry CT if a dry bed or hard slats over the bed is why you want a cover. It's a hard roll-up that stays shut while the tailgate is locked, rated 400 lb, backed for 5 years, and the only cover we've reviewed that reads low on our leak-risk gauge. It rolls to the cab for the whole bed and leaves the rear window clear. Its rear seal lands on top of the tailgate, so the gate shuts first and the cover second.
Stay in the budget tier if the bed carries groceries, gym bags and the odd load of mulch, the truck parks where you can see it, and a little water in a corner after a storm won't hurt anything. Our hard folding guide covers the Ultra Flex against the other name-brand folders.
Which listing fits your truck
Every pick comes as a separate part for each truck and bed. The table shows which beds we matched to a listing on Amazon's own product page; the rows under each pick add the years, part numbers and restrictions.

F-150 (Gen14, Gen13) | 6.5 ft, one listing for both generations; 5.5 ft for the Gen13 only | 5 ft 7 in, 6 ft 7 in and 8 ft 2 in, each listing covering both generations | 5 ft 7 in and 6 ft 7 in, separate listings per generation | Not confirmed on Amazon | Gen14 5 ft 7 in and 8 ft 2 in; Gen13 5 ft 7 in, 6 ft 7 in and 8 ft 2 in |

Tacoma (4th gen) | 6 ft, with the factory deck rail system | 5 ft, with the deck rail system | Not confirmed on Amazon | Not confirmed on Amazon | 5 ft, with the deck rail system |
Tacoma (3rd gen) | 5 ft; not with Trail Special Edition boxes | 5 ft 1 in and 6 ft 2 in | 5 ft 1 in and 6 ft 2 in | 5 ft | Not confirmed on Amazon |
Tundra (3rd gen) | 5.5 ft, with or without the track system | 5 ft 7 in with the rail system; 6 ft 7 in with or without it | Not confirmed on Amazon | 5 ft 7 in, with the cargo management rails | 5 ft 7 in |
Maverick | 4.5 ft; not with the Utility Track System | 4 ft 6 in | Not confirmed on Amazon | 4 ft 6 in | 4 ft 6 in |
Colorado/Canyon (2023 on) | 5 ft 1 in | Not confirmed on Amazon | Not confirmed on Amazon | 5 ft; one listing spans 2015-2025 | 5 ft 2 in |
Ranger (2024 on) | 5 ft (2024-2025) | 5 ft (2024-2025) | Not confirmed; the Amazon listings are older parts | Not confirmed on Amazon | Not confirmed on Amazon |
On a Silverado or Sierra, the T3 listings also rule out the 2019 Silverado 1500 LD and Sierra 1500 Limited and warn that the cover will interfere with a power tailgate, so check your tailgate before you order. On a Ram DT, the Lo Pro and the G2 are the picks with confirmed split-tailgate listings; the EFX listings exclude the multifunction tailgate, and RealTruck lists no RamBox EFX at all. Four Lo Pro beds come without the quick-release the listings advertise, per RealTruck's own part pages, so check RealTruck's page for your bed if you'll pull the cover often.
Three more traps. On a Colorado or Canyon, the T3 can sit narrower at the tailgate end, which Tyger calls by design, and the Low Profile is out on a Trail Boss, whose factory sport bar is in the way, per Rough Country. On a 2024 or newer Ranger, pass on the Amazon EFX listings, which are older parts; RealTruck sells a separate one, so look for the 2024-on Ranger EFX by RealTruck's part number. And Tyger lists a T3 for the Ram DT that we couldn't confirm on Amazon; search the Ram T3 and check fit for your truck if you have neither a RamBox nor the split tailgate, which Tyger says it won't fit. If your truck has an over-the-rail drop-in liner, Tyger says the T3's clamps need small holes cut in it.
The budget cover we would buy
For most daily drivers, the T3. It costs the least, rates highest of the five, and its warranty runs longer than the EFX's or the G2's. Accept the vinyl, the stack at the front and the missing lock, keep weight off it, and it'll do the job for years.
Climb the ladder one rung at a time and only for what you'll use: the Lo Pro for the whole bed, the EFX for a lock, the Low Profile if your truck is one of its four and you'd trade tool-free removal for a drier record, the G2 for a name-brand folder that clears the whole bed. Our T3 against the Lo Pro and MX4 against the G2 comparisons go deeper on two of those calls. If the bed has to stay dry, skip the rest of the ladder and buy the Sentry CT.

Tyger Auto T3 Soft Tri-Fold Tonneau Cover
The cheapest cover we would buy and the highest rated of these five: vinyl over an aluminum frame, a no-drill install and 5 years of warranty. No lock, no load rating, and folded it still keeps the front third of the bed covered.

For budget buyers who use the whole bed: a soft roll-up that clears nearly all of it and a limited lifetime warranty from authorized dealers. It costs more than the T3, has no lock, and sheds water only while the vinyl is kept tight.

What owners say
Owners of these covers mostly say theirs has earned its price. A Tyger soft tri-fold about five years old is losing its rubber gasket and still keeps the bed pretty dry. A Gator EFX owner calls theirs sturdy, a good fit and nearly waterproof even without the drain tubes. A Rough Country Low Profile owner sees barely any water after a touchless car wash and takes the cover off in minutes for the whole bed. A Lo Pro owner has run one for years with no issues and likes how it rolls completely out of the way and back out tight. A BAKFlip G2 went nine years before its lock mechanism came away from the lid. Our reviews of each pick carry the full owner record on water, fit and wear. We'd buy for the job first, whether that's a lock, the whole bed or a dry bed, and on price second.
“My tyger soft cover is like 5 years old. The rubber gasket on it started falling off maybe a year ago. Still keeps everything pretty dry even without the gasket material in some parts. Surprisingly nothing is rusting. All works as it should. ... tyger tri folder cover has held up as good as it has.”
“Gator EFX hard folding cover ... it’s great! Very study, fits great, and is 99% water proof even without the drain tubes installed.”
“I have the RC low profile tri fold, but not the one that folds all the way up. ... It folds twice but not the third time up against the back window. I love mine so far. If I need the full bed, it takes about 5 min. to take off. Mine seems to be about as water proof as one could expect. Even after going through a touch less car wash, there’s barely any water in the bed. Just make sure to line it up precisely when you install and it works great.”
“my Bak Flip G2 lasted for quite a long time, until the lock mechanism become seperate from the lid. This was also in year 9 of owning it”
“Check out the Truxedo Lo Pro. IMO, a better set up as it rolls up completely out of the way and rolls back out tight with a self-tightening system. I've had mine for over 7 years, no issues!”
