Tonneau Cover Warranty: What Voids It and How to Make a Claim

Quick Take
A tonneau cover warranty pays for defects in materials and workmanship on a cover you bought new, and under the terms we cite the maker chooses the remedy, usually a repair or a replacement. Terms on the covers we've reviewed run from 1 year (the RetraxONE XR, Peragon's Classic edition) to a limited lifetime (the RetraxPRO XR, the TruXedo Lo Pro). Every maker that addresses transfer limits coverage to the original buyer. Accidents, neglect, a bad install and broken care rules fall outside it.
Read the care rules, because breaking one voids the coverage. RealTruck voids its Sentry CT terms for silicone or petroleum conditioners and its RetraxPRO XR terms for lubricated rails, Tyger voids its covers for any weight on top, and RealTruck wants snow and ice off before you open and the cover off before the truck is towed from the rear. To claim, register the cover or keep the dated receipt, photograph the fault, get a return authorization before shipping anything, and expect to pay the shipping. This isn't legal advice: terms change, so read the maker's current wording before you buy and again before you claim.
Buying with the warranty in mind? The TruXedo Sentry CT pairs 5 years on its hard parts and its fabric with the driest record of any cover we've reviewed. Pick your truck and bed in each fitment table to reach the right listing. See picks ↓
A tonneau cover warranty is only as strong as the paperwork behind it. A lost receipt, a seller the maker doesn't recognize, or a box shipped back without an authorization number hands the maker a reason to refuse a fault it would otherwise cover.
The terms also carry care rules, and breaking one voids the coverage. Most are common sense. A few are easy to break without thinking: a squirt of lubricant on a sticky Retrax rail, a silicone dressing on a Sentry CT's canvas, a soft cover pried open under a crust of ice.
How makers handle claims varies as much as the terms. BAK tends to answer a valid claim with a whole new cover. Retrax has shipped free rails and a free canister for damage the owners caused themselves. Peragon refused one owner replacement rubber edging under warranty.
What a tonneau cover warranty covers
Every warranty here covers defects, not damage or wear. Don't expect labor either: TruXedo's Lo Pro terms say it won't pay labor to replace a defective part, and Rough Country's warranty page excludes any cost of removal or installation. Damage beyond the cover is out too. Tyger's terms exclude consequential and incidental damage, and TruXedo's disclaim damage to person, product or property, so cargo soaked by a failed seal is your loss. Here's what each cover we've reviewed carries:
Cover | Warranty | Where you buy it | Claim paperwork and shipping |
|---|---|---|---|
5 years on rails, clamps, bows and fabric, original buyer, not transferable | The terms say nothing about sellers | Registration on file or a detailed, dated receipt; an RMA number first; shipping charges apply | |
Limited lifetime, original buyer, not transferable; authorized dealers only | Full warranty through authorized dealers; eBay and other unauthorized sellers may not be covered; none on used, repaired or altered covers | Proof of purchase; an RMA number authorized in advance; parts go back prepaid | |
Limited lifetime, original buyer, not transferable | The terms say nothing about sellers | Proof of purchase may be required; an RMA number first; you pay postage or shipping | |
RetraxONE XR | 1 year, original buyer, not transferable | The terms say nothing about sellers | Same RealTruck Retrax terms as the PRO XR |
UnderCover Ultra Flex and Armor Flex | 5 years, original buyer, not transferable | The terms say nothing about sellers | Registration on file or a detailed, dated receipt; an RMA number first; shipping charges apply |
BAKFlip MX4 and F1, BAK Revolver X4s | 5 years, original buyer, not transferable | Claim through the place of purchase or BAK online | Registration or a detailed, dated receipt; order number, part number and photos; authorization before any return. The folding covers' install sheet adds that shipping charges apply |
BAKFlip G2 | 3 years, original buyer, not transferable | Claim through the place of purchase or BAK online | As the other BAK covers |
Tyger T3 | 5 years, original buyer, not transferable | Authorized resellers in the contiguous US; not Amazon Warehouse Deals, Used or Like New | The original order receipt with your name, part number and date; photos or video; return authorization number on the box. Shipping charges not stated |
LEER HF650M | 3 years, original retail buyer, not transferable, per LEER's page; some older Amazon listings say limited lifetime | Off LEER's own site; Amazon listings remain | Proof of purchase. No claim steps we could find |
Gator EFX | 2 years | A 30-day swap for another Gator cover, RealTruck.com purchases only | No claim steps on the pages we cite |
Rough Country Low Profile | 5 years per Rough Country's site; the in-box manual says 3 years, original purchaser, not transferable | A 90-day return on roughcountry.com purchases | Not stated on the pages we cite |
Peragon Landmark | 1, 3 or 5 years by edition | Sold direct; 60-day return in new or gently used condition | Phone or email. Transfer and shipping for claims not stated on its policy page |
Same on every set of terms that spells it out: the clock starts at the original purchase, the maker chooses the remedy, and a cover that fails because of how it was installed or used isn't a defect. Rough Country's site and its manual disagree on the term, so save the web page alongside your receipt. LEER's terms come from an archived copy of its HF650M page.
What voids a tonneau cover warranty, maker by maker
Read the care rules the week the cover goes on, not the week it fails. These are the ones the makers write into their terms:
Maker and cover | Care and use rules that void it | Also outside the warranty |
|---|---|---|
RealTruck: TruXedo Sentry CT | Cleaning with anything but mild automotive soap and water; conditioners with silicone or petroleum; driving partly open; cargo tied to the cover's frame; rolling or stowing it against the cab window; opening it under snow or ice; a rear tow with it on | Accident, neglect, unforeseeable use, improper installation or servicing |
RealTruck: RetraxPRO XR and ONE XR | Lubricating the rails or sealed ball bearings; strong chemicals or cleaners; an unsecured cover or tether strap; opening under snow or ice; a rear tow with it on | Accident, neglect, unforeseeable use, improper installation or servicing |
RealTruck: UnderCover Ultra Flex and Armor Flex | Anything but mild automotive soap and water; a cover not secured at all points while moving; opening under snow or ice; a rear tow with it on | Accident, neglect, unforeseeable use, improper installation or servicing |
Improper installation or use; parts that are not genuine TruXedo | Used, repaired, altered or modified covers; misuse, negligence, accident and ordinary wear and tear | |
BAK (MX4, F1, G2, X4s) | Improper installation and skipping the clamp check after a week of driving (folding-cover sheet); lubricants, oils or solvents on the rubber hinges and seals (folding and Revolver sheets) | No return of a non-defective cover once installed (warranty page) |
Tyger | Any weight on top or cargo touching the cover; driving open at high speed with the straps loose; an unsecured cover whipping in the wind; folding with the rear latches out; opening under snow or ice; abrasive silicone cleaners and brush-style car washes | Accident, improper use, neglect, improper service, installation or removal, modifications, acts of God, normal wear and tear; interference with other accessories or trailers; consequential and incidental damage |
Rough Country | Neglect, modified installation hardware, alterations, added equipment, abuse, accident, chemicals labeled "safe for rubber" (in-box manual) | Weather-related damage and wear from lack of maintenance (manual); removal and installation costs (website) |
Gator, LEER, Peragon | None published on the pages we cite | Peragon's exclusions sit in its full warranty document, not on its policy page; read it before you claim |
Same on RealTruck's covers: the Sentry CT, RetraxPRO XR and Ultra Flex terms all ask for the clamps to be checked for tightness after a week of driving and periodically after that, and the care rules sit in the same list that voids the warranty. BAK's folding-cover sheet asks for the same check. Do it, because "improper installation" is the exclusion a maker can reach for when rails shift and the cover fails.
Tyger's rule against weight is the strictest here, and it makes no exception for snow. Brush a Tyger cover off after a storm. Rough Country's manual puts weather-related damage outside the warranty altogether, a wide exclusion for a part that lives outdoors. RealTruck's Sentry CT terms and its RetraxPRO XR terms are the bluntest about products you might reach for to help: a silicone or petroleum conditioner voids the CT's coverage, and lubricating the rails or sealed ball bearings voids the Retrax's.
Used covers, Amazon sellers and dealer installs
A used cover arrives without a warranty from any maker that says who is covered. RealTruck's terms name the initial owner, BAK's and TruXedo's the original purchaser, and Tyger, LEER and Rough Country's manual say the same. Peragon's policy page doesn't address transfer, and Peragon's Reddit account told a secondhand owner there was no warranty, though it offered to help anyway. Goodwill sometimes fills the gap: Retrax shipped a new canister, free, to an owner who bought the truck used and broke the canister on a kayak, after asking only for the serial number.
Where you buy a new cover matters too. Tyger honors its warranty only through authorized resellers in the contiguous US, and not on anything bought through Amazon Warehouse Deals or sold as Used or Like New on Amazon. TruXedo grants the Lo Pro's full warranty on covers from authorized dealers and warns that eBay and other unauthorized internet sellers may be shipping used, defective or incomplete covers. Before you buy on Amazon, look at who the seller is. Our picks link new listings only.
Older owner posts still call Tyger's warranty lifetime. Tyger's page now says 5 years, and that's the term we'd plan on.
Some dealers are said to double the warranty, usually in return for doing the install: owners and an installer describe it on BAK and Roll-N-Lock covers, and a Reddit reply says a preferred dealer can do it on the Sentry CT. That offer comes from the dealer. It isn't in the RealTruck or BAK terms we cite, so get it in writing before you pay.
Return windows aren't warranties, and each one is narrow. Gator's 30-day swap for another Gator cover covers only RealTruck.com purchases. Rough Country's 90-day return applies to its own site. Peragon takes a cover back within 60 days of receipt in new or gently used condition, in the original packaging, but you pay the return shipping and it doesn't refund what you paid to have it shipped.
How to make a tonneau cover warranty claim
Do the first two steps the day the cover goes on. The rest start when something breaks.
- Register the cover and file the receipt. RealTruck's Sentry CT and Ultra Flex terms and BAK's warranty page want registration on file or a detailed, dated receipt. Keep the order confirmation and the part number with the truck's papers.
- Save the install sheet. It holds the care rules and, for BAK's folding covers, the warranty terms. "Improper installation" is judged against it.
- Photograph the fault before you touch it. Tyger's form asks for photos or video, BAK's online claim asks for images, and BAK has asked owners for photos before shipping a replacement.
- Gather the numbers. BAK's claim asks for the order number, your truck's year, make and model, the product name or part number, a description and a copy of the receipt. Tyger asks for a receipt showing your name, the part number and the purchase date. Retrax has asked for the cover's serial number.
- Contact the maker. BAK takes claims through the place of purchase or its online form. For the Sentry CT, RetraxPRO XR and Ultra Flex, RealTruck's terms send you to its Customer Service Department. Tyger uses a claim form on its site, Peragon a phone number and an email address, and TruXedo's Lo Pro terms give a phone number.
- Get the authorization number before you ship anything. RealTruck, TruXedo and Tyger all require a return authorization first, and Tyger wants the number written on the outside of the box. BAK may refuse an unannounced return or send it back at your expense.
- Expect to pay shipping. RealTruck's terms say shipping charges apply to any repair or replacement, and TruXedo wants returned parts sent prepaid.
- Keep the old cover until they say otherwise. RealTruck and Tyger may want it back for a look, and some BAK claims end with you destroying it and sending photos instead.
- Call if the email goes quiet. A BAK claim sat unanswered for ten days by email, then a five-minute phone call got it approved.
What a claim gets you
BAK's answer to a valid claim is usually a whole cover, sometimes a newer model than the one that failed. The other makers ship parts, and the record is thinner. Here's what owners have come away with:
Maker | What claims have produced |
|---|---|
BAK | Whole new covers and tops; a different model in the swap (Revolver X4 to X4s, F1 to MX4, MX4 to a Revolver); a new cover for an X2 the wind tore; parts only as warranty replacements, not for sale |
Retrax | Replacement side rails sent free without photos; a new canister for an owner who bought the truck used |
Peragon | Replacement rubber edging refused under warranty about a year in |
Rough Country | A whole new cover sent in answer to a request for one part (model not named) |
Tyger | A whole new cover within a week of photos of loose stitching, under its older lifetime terms |
LEER | New prop-rod clips for a set that broke, though that owner found customer service slow to answer |
A swap fixes a defect, not a design. Two MX4 owners whose covers or tops were replaced over leaks say the replacement leaked like the first. If water comes in at the bulkhead, the tailgate or the rails, check the seals and drains with our guide to fixing a leaking tonneau cover before you file. And if you break a BAK cover yourself, don't count on buying the part: BAK told an X4s owner it ships parts only as warranty replacements.
Mistakes that void a warranty or sink a claim
- Lubricating rails and seals. It voids the RetraxPRO XR warranty outright, and BAK's install sheet cautions that lubricants, oils and solvents could damage the folding rubber hinges and seals, and puts the warranty on the line if they do.
- The wrong product on fabric or vinyl. Silicone or petroleum conditioners void the Sentry CT terms; Tyger rules out abrasive cleaners that contain silicone and brush-style car washes.
- Forcing it open under snow and ice. RealTruck's terms for the Sentry CT, RetraxPRO XR and Ultra Flex and Tyger's terms all want the cover clear before it opens.
- A rear tow with the cover on. RealTruck's terms for the same three covers say the cover must come off and be stored before the truck is towed from the rear.
- Driving with it open or loose. Never drive a Sentry CT partly open. Tyger voids for high-speed driving with the cover open and the straps undone, and for wind whip. Retrax voids for an unsecured cover or tether strap, and Extang, a maker we haven't reviewed, told an owner its tether has to be in place or the warranty is void.
- Skipping the one-week clamp check. It's in the RealTruck and BAK terms, and loose clamps are how a cover shifts into an "improper installation" claim.
- Cutting or modifying it without asking. TruXedo excludes altered or modified covers and Rough Country's manual excludes modified installation hardware. An X4s owner who had to trim weatherstripping got BAK to say in an email exactly where to cut first.
- Buying from the wrong seller. Tyger won't cover Amazon Warehouse, Used or Like New purchases, and TruXedo's full warranty runs through authorized dealers.
- Shipping it back unannounced. Every maker here that describes returns wants an authorization first, and BAK may refuse the box or send it back at your cost.
The covers we'd buy for the warranty
We'd buy the TruXedo Sentry CT. Its 5 years cover the hard parts and the fabric top under separate terms, and it's the driest cover we've reviewed, so the warranty and the record point the same way. The rules are short: soap and water, no silicone or petroleum conditioners, never partly open, and the cover off for a rear tow.
The RetraxPRO XR carries the longest term of any hard cover we've reviewed, a limited lifetime that ends if the cover changes hands, and it outprices the CT on every listing we matched. Remember its one trap: no lubricant on the rails. The UnderCover Ultra Flex gives you 5 years on a hard tri-fold for a little under the CT. The TruXedo Lo Pro's limited lifetime is the longest soft-cover term here and the cheapest way into a long warranty, but only from an authorized dealer, and a lifetime against defects won't keep its bed dry.
Shorter terms don't rule a cover out, but price them in. The BAKFlip G2 carries 3 years, the Gator EFX 2, and the RetraxONE XR 1, against 5 years or more on the covers above.

What owners say
BAK owners most often describe a warranty claim that ended in a new cover or a new top, some of them moving to a different BAK model in the swap, though two MX4 owners say the replacement leaked like the original. Retrax sent free side rails to one owner and a new canister to a secondhand one. Peragon refused replacement rubber edging to one owner. Rough Country sent a whole cover in answer to a parts request, and Tyger replaced a whole cover within a week under its older lifetime terms. Owners and an installer describe dealers that double the warranty, usually for doing the install; no maker's terms we cite say so.
“I bought a Revolver X4 in March 2021, and a year later, the felt lining on the inside of the cover started to delaminate. “a known issue with the X4.” I simply emailed their customer support, and they responded quickly. They asked for pictures of the delamination and informed me they would upgrade me to the Revolver X4s. Bak shipped a new cover to me right away. All they asked was that I remove the old cover, render it unusable, and send them photos of the damage within two weeks of opening the support ticket.”
“The rubber on the outside failed on mine around a year after installation. Contacted customer service and asked for warranty replacement on the rubber edge. They refused and said I would have to buy them. ... They refused, so I will never buy anything from Peragon again.”
“I'll throw another plug in for BakFlip. I have a 2019 Taco with a 5'2" bed, and I have the X2 on it. I was trying to load some items in the bed when the wind whipped the cover up over the cab. The antenna on the cab placed a tri-cornered tear in the center of the vinyl. I called BakFlip, and after several emails (all friendly and informative), I was informed they will ship out a new X2 cover to replace the damaged one. All I need to do is send them photos of the destroyed cover.”
“I have the Bakflip X4S and it's the biggest hunk of junk ever made. Delaminated in the heat and was replaced under warranty.”
“I bought my truck used at a gmc dealership about 2 years ago. I broke the canister when loading a kayak and over tightening. I emailed retrax and said I broke something. They asked for the serial number and shipped me a brand new canister for free. No questions asked.”
“Talked to Extang tech support to day. They said the tether has to be there or it voids warranty.”
